We arrived at SYC about 11.30, the wind was still blowing a bit so after we had organised the last few things on the boat we decided to have a coffee. Finally we were off, a rather uneventful trip to QCYC except for two interesting situations. Firstly we crossed the bow of Sea Shepard, an imposing ship with all its gear & the skull & crossbow. She was travelling at only about 2knots it was difficult to tell for awhile if the ship was moving. When we'd past we noticed a large amount of smoke coming from the funnel - not normal & the speed or lack thereof go us wondering was everything ok. It got too much for John he radioed them to see if all was ok ...... The reply came back, "All good, ... read more

Isn’t boating fun, you plan a trip & then the weather changes so we are delayed. Yesterday & today although the sun is shining, beautiful day the winds are not favourable for us on the bay. Yesterday a gale warning & today strong wind warning. At home it’s just a beautiful late summer day! Lucky we don’t need to be at the bottom end of the bay until Friday - so with more pleasant conditions tomorrow for the bay we’ll head off then. A nice day to rest & enjoy home before our trip. ... read more

11_Sydney Harbor 10 Feb 2016 We docked in Sydney at about 6 AM, a night and day and another night out of Melbourne; about 36 hours at sea. We were well away from the Great Barrier Reef and the Australian shore, and saw nothing except ocean and a few more ships than usual going the other way. Out on the rear deck at 9 AM, already docked, the famous beauty of the Sydney Harbor was not apparent. We could see two bridges and a lot of industrial activity, but not the Opera House. We should have been on deck at sunrise to see those famous sights as we sailed in, before we turned a corner into our dingy docking area. We will be ashore here for five days, so maybe we will see them on a ... read more

10_ It’s not salt pork and hardtack I’m sure you have read of the dietary privations of a long sea voyage- food that starts out alright but soon degenerates into a daily ration of rum, with moldy salt pork and worm-eaten sea biscuits. And then come all the vitamin deficiency diseases- ricketts, scurvy, etc. I assure you we are not suffering from any of this. Ms. Amsterdam serves five main meals every single day. We have a buffet breakfast with offerings of Eggs Benedict (five varieties) waffles, crepes, omelets to order, fresh fruit, grapefruit halves, several kinds of sausages, German cold cuts, sweet rolls, smoked salmon with cream cheese and fresh baked rolls, and every day some surprise that we have not seen before. Then I go up to the library to read the New York ... read more

Australia, the largest island-continent, had been inhabited for nearly 60,000 years by Aborigines, who migrated from Southeast Asia during the ice age, This was before the sea levels rose and isolated Australia from the rest of Asia. it is believed that Aborigines flourished for tens of thousands of years, free of outside influences. Their were many tribal groups, speaking at least 200 different languages. Their common bond was their spiritual beliefs. At the height of their culture, there may have been 500,000-1,000,000. The arrival of the Europeans quickly changed their isolation. They were described by the first explorers as 'wandering bands of savages still living in the Stone Age.' This perception was the beginning of a deep and long lasting misconception. They need a voice and their history needs to be told, so here goes! The ... read more

The South Island Welcome to the South Island. The island of extreme sports. Skydiving, Jetboats, Bungy jumps, reverse bungy, Canyon swings, you name it they’ll more than likely strap you in and send you the air or water or barreling down some hill. Arriving in Picton we get in the car and drive off the ferry. (Pic of ferry and Picton) Off we go to the Abel Tasman region. We pull into our accommodation another backpackers lodge in the wilderness called “Old MacDonalds farm”. No lie. Great place camp wise. It s becoming quickly apparent these “backpackers” places some once called hostels are not just full of kids on gap years “finding themselves” while on a gap year, giving deodorant and personal grooming up for a year or so, traveling around as cheap as possible while ... read more

This is the last full day at sea before we get to Sydney. That means it is the last day of enjoying all the pleasures of cruising. It does NOT mean the end of our story because we have about 10 more days scheduled on land before we return home, but it does mean we will slide down a little on the “pampered passenger” scale. That being said, this is as good a time as any to proclaim our appreciation and praise the service we received this cruise. However good this was, it actually is not unusual – we always get excellent service from Princess Cruises. We don’t want to make this into a commercial, but this is a terrific way to take a vacation and we recommend it to anyway who wants to see different ... read more

Hello following another restful Sunday sailing on the Tasman Sea. The low today was supposed to have been 66 and the high was 76. It was cloudy early in the morning, but mostly sunny the rest of the day. This was fairly low key day today. We had breakfast at the buffet and then went to a few of the shipboard activities. Janet spent part of the morning with her Knitters and Natters friends. She brought along two different projects, so today she worked on the second one with her friends. David went to watch the Fruit Carving demonstration and then stayed for the Martini Demonstration. Both of these were held on the steps of the Grand Piazza and David was able to get a nice close place to view from. Unfortunately he did not get ... read more

Saturday, March 8, 2014 This will be my last blog entry for our cruise to the South Pacific. On Sunday, we disembark and fly home to Houston. In typical fashion, I was woke up super early this morning, not to run, but to work on my blog in the Royal Promenade. There are a few other crazy people on the ship that are also up early. Cindy also was up early, however not until 6:15am. I truly enjoyed sitting in the lovely Royal Promenade in front of the Irish bar each morning, drinking a cup of coffee, and writing about how much fun we are having on our trip. We are very fortunate to be able to experience this. Cindy and I ate breakfast in the dining room this morning. The food is much ... read more

This morning we woke up to the sound of the ship’s horn booming about 6:20. We’re not sure why they did that, but it was a very effective alarm clock. It did follow a good night’s sleep though, so we declare ourselves fully adjusted to the time zone changes. We rested a little longer and then got up for a fresh day at sea. We went to the Regency Dining Room for their sit-down breakfast, instead of the buffet we will probably have during most of our days in port. Janet had found out on the last day of our Baltic cruise that she could have ordered Eggs Benedict any day in the dining room and she didn’t have to wait for it to appear as the “special” on the morning menu. It turns out to ... read more
