The Matukituki River drains from the Mt Aspiring area and enters Lake Wanaka just north of
Glendhu Bay a very popular camping spot on the shores of Lake Wanaka. We decided to go for a
drive to the end of the road and see how close we could get to Mt Aspiring. Not far from
Wanaka we came across a station with the name "Tuohy's Farm" on it, this is Sheryll's maiden
name and is not a common name in the South Island, her brother Peter had been in this area
not too long ago and had met the owners, we believe that we may already know why the station
is named Tuohy's as we have located a Thomas Tuohy in an old book we have on the history of
the Wanaka district and there is pictures of Thomas Tuohy an early identity in the area. At
this stage I don't think there is any close family connection that I am aware of. After stopping
for some lunch at Glendhu Bay we continued on up the valley on a good gravel road and after
passing the turn off to Treble Cone ski field a view of the Rob Roy glacier
appeared on the
horizon, with Mt Aspiring settled beside it. The valley is lovely glacial valley with high
sides and farmland on the river flats all the way to the end of the road. The carpark had
about 60 or more vehicles in it, obviously a very popular destination for trampers. On the
way back we stopped to watch some rock climbers practicing abseiling on a vertical cliff face.
