So I have made this like a little diary so I have written a little here and a little there: Day 2 - first day of diving: After a last minute panic run to the chemist to get some drug to clear my dodgy sinus and ears I made it to the airport to catch my flight. Very excited indeed I boarded and the views from the plane was great! The great barrier reef is pretty cool from the air! Made it to PNG in Port Moresby, the capital. As we entered the arrivals hall we were greeted by men in hawaii shirts (well i suppose they are not from hawaii but you know what i mean..) singing and playing cheesy pacific music, with flowers behind their ears, love it. Made it to the domestic terminal ... read more

Rabaul was reduced in size after the last major eruption - most of the town and the airport were moved out of the old caldera. This place may be one of the last frontiers (as advertised) but the people are friendly, the weather is great, and the place is like a huge garden. Roads get washed out, and 'snowbanks' of ash get put to the side - in some places the grass is just growing back. Brisbane Bronco Sunday Football, adverts for portable saw mills, and Queensland news on the TV. ... read more

Why PNG? Since I got my job at Ericsson as a Network Engineer I was promised there would be lots and lots of travel. After sitting on my behind for a year, and seeing all of my colleagues jet-setting all around the globe, my number came up. I'd been bugging my manager for an assignment for so long, that when the prospect of PNG came up, I couldn't say no. -Yes, the Australian government has issued a warning when travelling to PNG due to high crime rates (muggings, high profile kidnappings, and recently 12 prisoners escaped from a maximum security prison!). -Yes, there is a lot of malaria due to those pesky mosquitoes. -Yes, they force you to work long, long hours in PNG. One colleague had to work 15 hours EVERYDAY when he was here. ... read more

Another place for a pin, but not much to see here except an active volcano named Ā“TurvurvurĀ”'. It first erupted in 1994-95 and almost completely destroyed the town of Rabaul, not from flowing lava but because it was completely covered up with ashes. I have enclosed a photo of Turvurvur as it looked when we sailed away last evening. It was in full glory, spewing forth smoke and ashes which made the air around town most unpleasant. The second photo is of the waterfront and you can see that it doesn't compare at all to the beauty of the waterfronts in Auckland and Sydney. Most of the passengers are not sure just why the Queen Victoria decided to include Rabaul on its list of places to stop for the day. We are now on our way ... read more

Papa New Guinea. Today our boat docked at its last exotic port of call; Rabaul, PNG, a small volcanic island surrounded by lush tropical forest and dense jungle. Japanese war history has left its scars upon this primitive land, along with the volcanic eruption of 1994. The people are phoenixes; they have risen from the ash and have more life flowing from them then a new born baby. There warmth and rapture with us melted my heart. Black children with mustard colored afros, chocolate saucer eyes, and glowing smiles stole my breath away. I spent my day on the tiny, uninhabited Pigeon Island. The water was 30 degrees, and crystal blue. The sand and palm tree backdrop, another splendor of beach beauty, which I have almost grown accustomed to. With snorkel and mask I waded out ... read more

Hey Everyone, I realized that is has been a while since I last updated my pictures. So here are the pics from my Team in Port Moresbey. I had the chance to go on an A-team. Which basically is an onshore team for the duration of the port. My past A-team was in Cambodia over a year ago. Anyways We went to the port moresby City mission. The mission takes in street kids and people of low education. They train them on a farm to work as well as giving them some basic education. There are were 120 "boys " there who lived on the farm. So we lived among them for 18 days and basically just were there sharing and encouraging them. We did programs and creative misistry training. We also worked with them in ... read more

Papua New Guinea is a crazy place. I've seen dogs swim half a mile across the harbour to escape the torment of their owners. We've tied our boat up to a jetty and had wizened old men and women with black teeth try to sell us gold and parrots. And when I took a local boat to Alotau I experienced the genoristy of the wantok system and was treated by the owner as well as if I had been one of the family. This is a record of the 4 month journey we took in the Louisiade islands of PNG on our sailboat in 2003. We arrived in Budibudi, first landfall in PNG, in February and were greeted by a pod of pilot whales, happily swimming and puffing around 'Moet'. Budibudi is as picture perfect a ... read more

Today the singles in the missionary group went out to tour the Hope School here in Port Moresby. It was really eye opening to see the level and standards for education here in this country. The Hope School is actually what we would consider an alternative school or last chance school. Kids who are orphans or extremely impoverished and can not afford to send their kids to school are able to be apart of this school. They get the kids caught up and up to speed and then try to get them placed into a public school. We got to go and meet the student that we sponsored. He was a little shy, and thee was a lot of attention at the moment. But it was cool to meet him face to face. (Yes Julie we ... read more
