Geo: -4.20493, 143.52Some scene-setting is required if you are to fully understand the joys of spending a night at the Airport Lodge in Wewak. The front reception area has been long abandoned in much the same way a retreating army gives up it's more vulnerable territory in favour of the more defensible high ground- in this case locked offices in the back. In a prelude of what was to come we were shown to the Margaret room, which presumably was the best of the bunch named, as it was, after the owner herself. All of the rooms bore the names of the owners family which must have been endearing at one time but, given the current dilapidated condition of the rooms, must have been somewhat insulting at present. The rooms surrounded an enclosure that was billed ... read more

Geo: -3.56519, 143.62We had met a couple from Germany while attending the festival who were trying to put together a few days on the Sepik river so we arranged to join them if we could find transport to Wewak. This proved difficult as the only way to reach Wewak was via air and the exodus after the festival had chewed up all of the available seats. We did contact MAF, the airline run by missionaries in PNG, and while they did not fly according to any schedule, they were "thinking" about flying to Wewak on the Monday as we required but the plane was being "repaired" over the weekend??Apparently they were able to glue the wing back on, because when we showed up first thing Monday morning they were pretty certain they'd be flying at some ... read more

Geo: -5.8674, 144.207From the minute we entered the festival grounds we knew we were in for something special and it just kept getting better from there. We went early so we could wander around the outside of the show grounds and watch the various participating tribes getting ready. It's hard if not impossible to describe what we were seeing, hearing, smelling. An explosion of colour (can colours explode?) was made that much more exciting by the various tribes practicing both dances and songs with an energy that, at times, seemed to shake the ground. At times aggressive and at other times offered up shyly, the hospitality of the various participants was warm and authentic. Every time we turned around there was an amazing site that was pulling my camera like some sort of digital magnet- we had ... read more

Geo: -5.8674, 144.207Today our flights would take us from Brisbane to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea and then on to Mt Hagan. I don't know if Brisbane is a contender for the safest city in the world, but Port Moresby is regularly cited as a worthy contender for the worlds most dangerous city. Confirming that will have to wait as all we did was run the customs gauntlet and head unscathed to the domestic terminal to catch our flight to Mt Hagan. The Hotel Poreman arranged to pick us up and our ride to the hotel was a pretty good indication that we weren't in Kansas anymore. There wasn't a single pane of glass that wasn't covered by bars and/or wire mesh or simply boarded up, razor wire decorated virtually every building, and security guards and ... read more

2, 3 ,4 August 2011 – PRE TRIP Monday. The beginning of our journey began with a very rocky start. A call from the owner of the travel company the day before we leave Sydney warned us that some of the land owners had banded together to block part of the Kokoda Track. The trip was in jeopardy. Tuesday. We talk to the tour company and it is decided we have to fly to PNG with the expectation of all proceeding. We (Francine) continue packing and ticking off our lists of required items. There is so much to take. Although only 16kg allowed. We succeeded to get it all in. But why do we need 10 cotton balls. (We never used them the entire trip). One of the many mysteries of our Trek. Tuesday at 5pm, ... read more

Blog Two...Diving The FeBrina Fantabulous!!! Where to begin - above or below water? We've done 26 dives and as the days progressed we asked ourselves..."how can this get any better?" And it kept surpassing the previous day's wonderment. First of all, The FeBrina is the only boat out in the PNG waters here. The serenity and solitude contributes to this magical experience. Rimmed in the distance is a trio of volcanoes that enhances the sunrises. In the evenings the lightning brightens the horizon. Mesmerized by the sunlight on the water, the deep blue abuts the turquoise-green pateches of coral reef. On the boat, we are two of only twelve divers - a group of six from Sacramento, a professional underwater photographer from the Cannary islands (some of the attached pictures are his-bet you can tell which ... read more

Just finished 9 days at Rubio's Plantation Retreat. What a great start to our vacation! Michael says, "it far surpassed his expectations". Shane, an American who grew up in Hawaii, runs the retreat with his native wife, Annette, and his mom and dad. He is like "a god" here. Our ride along the 4 hour drive from the airport to Rubio's was like being in a parade. Everyone was waving and calling out to him - with genuine smiles and endearments. He has done so much for the people of this island: New Ireland...ten dollars of every hundred he makes, goes to the towns and their schools. He has created a surf team consisting of local guys who just placed first, second, and third in all divisions of the recent PNG finals in Madang. These guys ... read more

We talked about visiting Papua New Guinea for a long time. We finally got there September 2010. It's a land of diverse cultures, remote tribes, over 800 separate languages, 600 islands and some of the best diving spots anywhere in the world. We headed for Kimbe Bay, New Britain, for a 7 day liveaboard trip on the Febrina. We dived with about 9 other divers and Josie our dive master. Underwater, we saw some stunning corals and lots of pygmy seahorses, some found nowhere else. The second stop in our journey was at Tufi Dive Resort for some macro diving. Tufi was our favourite spot overall; we saw incredible creatures for the first time ever such as the Spanish Dancer, dwarf cuttlefish, pipefish, frogfish and so many nudibranchs. Steve and I are definitely hooked on macro ... read more

I visited the Walindi Resort on New Britain, Papua New Guinea in August 2010. What an incredible, enriching, and intriguing part of the world it was. I first landed in Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea and was so struck by the uniqueness of the locals. I have visited many places in the Caribbean, but not of them came close to comparing to PNG. My intention for this trip was to scuba dive and dive I did. My most sought after sea creature was the illustrious and tiny pygmy sea horse, and I am proud to say that I not only saw one, but several and captured them on film! Our flight from Port Moresby was most interesting. We flew on a small place with Air Nuigini, with few amenities, but perfectly safe. ... read more

A car full of young men screeched to a halt beside our bus and started shouting at all the people who had got off for a short break. Everyone quickly ran to the bus and pushing and shoving, started to clamber on. I turned to Howard and he shouted “Tribal fight!” and urged me to get back on the bus. With everyone looking on edge and all of the windows tightly shut we continued on a few hundred meters to the next village. There was a big group of sullen looking men waiting by the side of the road, all holding machetes and with black paint smeared on their faces. Thankfully they paid very little attention to us and we crept past and continued on our way a little more mindful of where we would take ... read more
