Living and traveling in a car for a month really has been one of the great road trips of my life. I've driven across the United States countless times for my company buying and selling equipment and have been on the road quite a lot in my days. These early road trips really gave me the tools to do what I am doing now and living out of a car has taught me what I am capable of and the conditions I am willing and able to live under. It has been a challenge and I'm proud of myself for sticking with it and renting a car was the absolute correct decision for me. Thank god I did not end up on one of the "backpacker" buses like Kiwi Experience. I would have been miserable. I'm ... read more

Early start and painful hike out - the feet are quite serious about making the wanderer aware they haven't had a rest in a while. Out, up to Franz Josef to collect bits then back down to Wanaka ahead of the rain and then slow down with beer, pizza, and pool and other such "civilised" passtimes...... read more

So having completed the "8 hour" Mt Fox route in 3.5 hours yesterday, the "7 hour" trek today takes 5.5 hours...something wrong with the formula but nothing wrong with the scenery.... read more

Long drive south to Franz Josef with a pause for a decent breakfast (SEBI 6.9) in Hokitika. Franz Josef is the usual bustle of tourist coaches and backpackers. I find my digs, change into trekking clothes, sling a waterproof in the day-pack just in case and drive on south to Mt Fox. Not able to work out why I ended up booking digs in Franz Josef as opposed to Fox but never mind. A half hour's drive and I'm parked up at Thirsty Culvert again - as I was all those years ago, but this time without RA, without the rain, and - amazingly - without too many sandflies. I discover the tailgate of the van (Rob - same size as a Toyota Lucida, seats taken out the back to make a bed) does not lock. ... read more

Franz Joseph to Wanaka. We drove to Lake Mathesion which is the famous mirror lake on a clear day with no wind Mount Cook and Mount Tasman are reflected in the lake. Unfortunately the wind had blown up and cloud was over the mountains but it was nevertheless a great walk to the lake and they had a nice coffee shop! We then drove to Fox Glacier, we parked then took a short walk to a viewpoint but again cloud did not help the view. We set off again and came to a beautiful viewpoint of the rugged beach. We stopped at Sailors Creek and took a walk along the beach after spraying ourselves with insecticide to warn off the sand flies. We then went to a salmon farm and bought some pâté not the best ... read more

We arrived in Picton South island on the last ferry off the day so we had pre arranged a hostel in Picton. The ferry crossing was very rough but we where rewarded with some stunning views and a great sunset, we had earlier planned to do the Queen charlotte track the next day but opted not to due to the fact that we had seen most of Marlbrough sounds on the way in. Also the fact that it is another one way track that first you have to pay for a hut pass then you must arrange and pay a water taxi to pick you up from the other end, this is becoming the norm on the money making "great walks" we are growing tired of this and now avoid these over rated things at all ... read more

Happy Australia Day to us! If we were at home, we’d be drinking champas and downing bacon & eggs at our local community Centre. Instead we’re in still bed listening to a variety of choppers flying to the glacier. Brendan says this is like being amist the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War . I did consider going for a helicopter tour on my own, but every year I hear on the news how at least one crashes every year, the latest being last September with 9 dead. I’m not taking any chances, even in the name of a good National Geo cover shot! We pack and leave by 0930 hours and drove a short distance out of town to the Glacier. About a kilometre or so from the glacier head there are already signs saying ... read more

Dec. 24th, 2007 Hello everyone! I hope you all are enjoying the Holiday Season and that it isn’t TOO cold where you are. Just so you know, its 70 and sunny here, and I think Im headed to the beach this afternoon. Life is rough, I know. Anyway, Ive been trying to update the blog for the past week, but again, there has been so much going on that trying to get it all down is impossible. So, in similar fashion to last time, Im going to let the pictures do most of the talking- there are HEAPS of them. A brief synopsis though- I took advantage of having three consecutive days off to book a trip up the West Coast of the South Island to Westland National Park- a location that is home to the ... read more
