Sitting here in dingy Greymouth. It reminds me a bit of Tipton- hmm has some waterways but thats about all. Not much going on. However its a stop off for the transalpine train and thats what Ive been doing today. Last couple of days have been pretty active. Im turning into a couch poatato and trying to reverse the trend as I slowly become more rotund! I fell in love with beautiful picture postcard Kaikoura- even started snooping around to see if they have any possible work there for me!- but Im just fantasising- reckon it would be too quiet there. kaikoura has some amazing sealife, basically because a deep water channel comes very close inland and the water is rich in nutrients, hence the sea mammals follow. On the day we left a pod of ... read more

With all the wild camping and hiking once in a while we were looking for indoor accomodation with showers. In Greymouth we got a lot more than this! Run as a Backpackers by a local couple Global Village is a place of great atmosphere. When we arrived and steped into the lobby we felt like being in someones living room. A nice fire was crackling in the fireplace, gentle music was playing in the background, and people sat on comfortable sofas reading or chating. We we got to see our room we could hardly belive it. It was completely in african style decor with pictures, wood carvings, and other affectionately chosen interior and accessories. It was easily the nicest room I had during my whole journey! And everything else was just perfect, too. Let alone the ... read more

Plans eh? Made to be broken and I arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand with my arrangements in tatters. The additional unscheduled trip to Alice Springs meant that I had no time to activate my Working Holiday Visa and settle for a while in Wellington with the lads. If my committment to meet Enda in Asia was to be honoured, I had a little over a month to explore New Zealand and this was one country that I just wasn't prepared to rush. The planned rendezvous with my talismanic travel-buddy Kenny Mc was bizarrely scuppered by his inspired challenge to traverse the South Island by bicycle so I faced yet another leg of my trip as a 'single traveller'. However, by now, I was well-accustomed to this form of travelling and if my previous experiences were anything ... read more

The car is not firing on all cylinders. Oh. It does still go, but not very well. So, I've stopped before the next big hills (need to get across Lewis Pass to Kaikoura tomorrow) to get someone to look at it. I turned up here in Greymouth in a slightly stressed state - and found a friendly local who pointed me in the direction of a friendly mechanic who could fit me in tomorrow morning at 08.15. Amazing what can happen when you ask for help! Fingers crossed it can be sorted quickly and cheaply - as I have an appointment at 05.30 on Thursday morning in Kaikoura with some dolphins. I guess if it doesn't work out I will have yet another reason to come back here. I will endevaour to be philosophical about it ... read more

Kate, Jo, Jordan and I decided to go from Christchurch to Grey Mouth on the west coast this weekend, innocent enough. We had to be in downtown Christchurch (a 45min bus ride) by 7am. Adventure number one: we get out there to wait for the bus and realize its Saturday and the busses don’t start running till 730! Um crap. So we just ended up calling a taxi and getting down there just fine, a little more money but it happens. So this bus was ridiculous, see picture. I thought for sure it would never make it, somehow it did. So the road from the east coast to the west coast was absolutely spectacular. You pass over the main fault line, thus passing through the highest elevation in New Zealand. Passed by the mountain they ... read more

Or, You Try Arguing Who Has To Yield With A Holstein Toward the end of the day today, when we were exhausted from tramping (the local word for hiking for those of you who know what else we're capable of), we were out on this country road that wasn't even mapped. We managed to find this gorge with a swing bridge that went across a pool of water the color of a bar of Zest soap. Yet again remarkable. But yes, we know it's beautiful. The country road. We're trying to make our way back to civilization after tracking down the gorge with vague directions from a local. And we're wondering why there's an amber light flashing up ahead. Ah. That's the light that lets you know the cows are crossing the road. Apparently the ladies ... read more

Today hasn't been bad. Stopped off to see one fo the largest fur seal colonies of NZ, then carried on to a stop at the Pancake rocks. So called because they are limestone which has bizarrely eroded to so really cloase together layers. Arrived at the 'Poo Pub' for tonights stay and took a walk down to the Lake, was a bit dull, grey, and wet though :( Took another walk to the lake after a decent cooked meal from Les, (the 80 yr old owner). Was all in the dark to see glow worms. Since then we've been in the pub having a themed night. Our theme: Black Bags ie I'm sitting in a very uncomfortable black bin bag outfit!! Tomorrow Franz Josef!... read more

Just a quick update to say we are here in NZ and doing very well. Arrived Friday April 1 at 5 am and felt quite jetlagged most of that day and the next. We took off with our old college buddy Dave Dennison on Saturday and drove to Tongariro National Park - "Mordor" for those Lord of the Rings fans out there. Near the peak of the recently dormant volcano it is the ugliest terrain I've ever seen - really eerie. Had a couple of great hikes further down the slopes then stayed overnight in Ohakune. Trampoline in the playground for the kids - they were over the moon. NZ highways are never boring and the landscape changes every few minutes. Spent 5 hours in the brand new and outstanding National Museum "Te Papa" in Wellington ... read more
