The Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand's most famous walks (not a leisurely stroll through the park, but actually a fairly tough hike). It starts out near a little town of Glenarchy and passes through forests and over mountains to come out near Milford Sound. Most people cover it as a 3 day hike, but due to our time constraints, we completed it in 2 days. We thought that was a good pace, except for being pass by several runners on our last day who RUN the whole track in 3-5 hours. Josh's friend Ramsey was kind enough to drive us to the start of the track before sunrise. If we went through the track transport it would have been expensive, we wouldn't have gotten there until 9:30, and would be spending the day walking ... read more

After an amazing day at the glaciers ....picking up two friends and getting bitten to death by sand flies at our over night stop off we head south to Queenstown stopping at a few walks and falls and generally taking it easy until we reach queenstown ...tired and hungry!!! After a good shopping trip for cheese crackers and wine we find the classiest camping ground in queenstown and set ourselves up for the night!!!!! The following day we went White river rafting then took the gondola and drank cocktails at the top.....too hungover the next day to think we cruised around queenstown generally wasting time untill we departed with our much loved home of two weeks.....what a sad moment that was. Me and Chris then headed off for our 3 day trek on the routeburn trail ... read more

Day 93 (cont): Summits and Lakes: The Divide to Lake Howden From Milford Sound, it was a half hour bus journey to the Divide (532m) and the start of the Routeburn. The only passenger dropped off at the stop, I was feeling a bit apprehensive as I put on my backpack and set off on the gravel track. Within five minutes of starting out, it began to rain. Although not a torrential downpour, it was annoying enough to warrant me burrowing into my rucksack to retrieve some Gortex. I did pass a couple of people on their way down from the track, but otherwise the path was fairly quiet. After forty-five minutes or so of uphill tramping through beech forest, I reached the turn-off for the 'Key Summit' (918m), an optional extra side route supposedly offering ... read more

... read more

After all the countless times of good weather it appeared that my luck was finally running out when starting the routeburn. Yes we took on yet another tramp. the Routeburn is a great walk lasting 3 days but its fairly easy compared to the majority we've done as it is only around 37km however the walk involves lots of mountain passes and high altitude so can be difficult in bad weather. The walk began along the Milford Road and finished in a place called Glenorchy near Queenstown. Our first day was a fairly drizzly day. The clouds were really low in the sky which made it really hard to see any form of scenery at all. Th first day begins steeply climbing about 900metres in the space of 2hrs. Unfortunately we couldnt see much on ... read more

Well, finally, I got to see New-Zealand in all its glory. Since I've been here, and even before that, I had heard time and time again how wet and rainy New-Zealand is. But for over a month all I saw was barely a couple of hours of moderate rain and drizzles here and there. Even in Fiordland, considered to be one of the wettest places on earth, I barely got a drizzle on the Milford and a just perfect day on the Doubtful. But on the Routeburn this had finally changed. The morning started a bit wet, but by the time we got to the Routeburn itself this has already developed to full pledged rain, plus wind. This had continued uninterrupted for more than 24 hour so we were continuously soaking wet for the rest of ... read more

Now onto the Routeburn Track - a three day hike over some mountains. The first day was a simple short hike up to our first campsite. Some mice got to a bit of the food over the night and a few bugs got to us, but we layed out and watched the stars that night, so we were pretty at peace with it all. Dustin, Brad, Meredith, and I also ventured off the path up along the stream to some waterfalls. I had fleece pants on because it was chilly, and I came out looking like a colorful mess of burs. It was still fun and we got warm up there, so we jumped off a rock into the a pool below some of the falls. It was freezing and refreshing! The second day was our ... read more

I was a little nervous starting this walk because it's recommended you do it in 3-4 days and I had decided to do it in 24 hours. After the Abel Tasman I thought it would be better to do this type of hike in less time in order to have a lighter pack. I looked at the maps, distance and topography of the trail and spoke to the Department of Conservation (DOC) who reluctantly admitted yes it was possible to do it in such short time. I also spoke to people who had done it and some said they didn't do it in that time but that you could, but others looked at me like I had four heads...crazy Canadian. It turns out it was completely possible and I wish I hadn't rushed so much because ... read more

Routeburn Track - Day 1 December 18, 2006 We were packed and ready to go… most of our luggage was stored at the hotel and the few belongings we were taking with us were packed and on our backs. We were picked up at our hotel and whisked by bus to the start of the Routeburn track. We enjoyed the views from the bus all along as we drove north along the banks of Lake Wakatipu. The mountains were stunning and the blue sky was promising. We started out over a swing bridge and into the “wilderness.” The day was beautiful and we were looking forward to this adventure. We joined about 25 others at the trail head… including a retiree and a 10-year-old girl! This couldn’t be that difficult! We started by crossing a swing ... read more
