Today turned out to be a day of rest. Much needed rest. We've been going full speed ahead since we arrived one week ago (already), and my body put up the surrender flag last night. I don't know if it was bad food or the combination of the four hours in the car, the three hour ferry ride, and my faulty inner ear that got me, but I was incredibly nauseated last night and had a bum stomach most of the day today. I thought we were supposed to be kayaking today, but when I called to reschedule this morning, they told me I'm on the books for tomorrow! Yahoo! Things have a way of working out sometimes.
If one has to be a bit under the weather on vacation, I must admit this is a wonderful place to be under the weather. This motel is more like an apartment. One of the things I love most about our accommodations in New Zealand is that all of them so far have had a kitchenette or a full guest kitchen for us to use. This kitchenette has a small oven, two stove burners, a microwave, a mini fridge, and every utensil
you need to cook full meals. One thing I have learned by staying at our tiny lake cabin is that there is a big difference between what you need in a kitchen versus what you want in a kitchen. That said, this kitchen is very comfortable for us. Luckily we decided to shop at the little local market last night so we can cook all of our meals while we are here in Picton. A fridge fully stocked with everything you need to be gentle on your stomach when you are sick is so nice, and not having to go out to search for food and sit in noisy restaurants when you feel gross is awesome. Today I was able to make toast, pasta noodles, chicken, and mashed potatoes right here in my New Zealand home. How cool is that? We should bring this concept back to the States.
The views and sounds here from our private porch are superb, too. And a bit familiar, which also helps when you feel bad. Listening to the boats, the ducks, and the cicadas and looking out across the expansive lawn reminds me of our Indiana lake home, while the sounds of the waves gently lapping the shore and the seagulls remind me of our California home. There is even a resident cat that roams around. Familiarity is nice.
So, I didn't find myself longing to be home on my sick day. I was perfectly comfortable here. And I'm quickly on the mend. I told Aaron the worst part of a sick day on vacation for me is that my ever present sense of adventure is in full combat with my common sense knowledge that when you are sick you must rest in order to mend quickly. I'm itching to get back out there tomorrow.
If all continues to improve - and it will - tomorrow we will be sea kayaking all day. Hope to get some good pictures and see some beautiful sights and wildlife. Stay tuned.
