So here I am with a short trip to another beach in Dunedin-
“THE LONG BEACH”. It about 35 KM from Dunedin past the port Chalmers (towards the north of the city).
In Dunedin I found that every beach is a bit different from each other and suitable for a particular kind of activity. St. Clair Beach (the first one that I visited) is like any other beach; SandFly Beach is the best place to play in sand dunes, and now this Long Beach is unique because of the caves that line the coastline. So this is a place to do rock climbing and set a camp in one of the caves (which we are gonna do next week).
Like every other weekend both Dirk and me were ready to go out uncertain about who else is going to accompany us. This time the invitation was open to many others and we had plans to play Cricket at the beach and enjoy the warmth of fire later in teh evening. Yes he is one German who is very eager to play Cricket and had come well prepared for it with a makeshift bat, some tennis balls and also a soccer ball
Rock Climbing at Long Beach
May be some day even I try the same! (just in case).
Our first destination was to go to the supermarket to get a few things to eat and enjoy the evening. once we were sure og everything, we loaded everything in his
BEAUTIFUL VAN (he expects everyone to say it every time you see it) and started our small journey. Once again the landscape was awsome. One thing is for sure, if I get a car someday then I think I will spend most of my time travelling in this beautiful place. It took us about 35-40 min to reach our destination and the drive was lovely. I think I should try to get a camera as soon as possible so that I can capture the beauty of this place and share with everyone else back home.
We took the required stuff from the van and started off towards the beach. As we walked down to the beach we were greeted by some brilliant basalt with climbing routes up to about 50m, and finally the lovely ocean. I think Dirk was a bit too eager to play cricket as all he could think of was where to play it. Finally we selected a stretch of beach, that we
thought was perfect, and started our game.
After about 15 min of playing we had a company. some our friends had turned up and they included Andrea, her brother-Tobias and Marja (said as Maria).
Now what’s the fun of being on the beach if you don’t go near the water so we left the game and decided to get a bit wet (at least the feet). The water was really cold but still Dirk was brave enough to think of trying a swim. Meanwhile I clicked some photographs of Andrea and I think this was the only time when we seemed to be going along well with each other, otherwise our relationship is like that of A CAT AND MOUSE (don’t ask me who’s who). No specific reasons for this but there is something ............ And the worst part is that she sits just opposite to me. Even Dirk could notice this sudden change and was both happy and surprised for it. The looks he gave me were like-
HOW ON EARTH IS IT POSSIBLE (at least this was the thing I felt). After that we even had photograph together (may be as a token to remember that sometimes
things do go on well).
Now it was getting a bit dark so we headed off towards the cave. We settled at the mouth of one such cave and prepared to make a fire. Yes we had brought some wood and even an axe to cut them and to start the fire there was the rough prints of Dirk’s thesis. What a way to get rid of that crap! Since it is getting a bit cold these days so it was a nice idea to sit besides the fire. Andréa and her brother had to leave early and since Dirk and I were planning to stay a bit more (till we finished all the wood and his thesis), Marja also stayed. So our conversations went on till about 12:30 when we also decided to leave. So we packed our backpacks and headed off towards our car. It was bit hard to find our way in dark but managed pretty well.
Since Dirk had modified his car a bit (for an upcoming trip with his friend) so there was no seat at the rear and we all had to squeeze-in at the front. It wasn’t bad, and we were also lucky
The trio!
Dirk with Andrea (left) and Marja (right) not to come across any night patrol. So take home message is that its not only the Indians who break the rules, its everywhere. This was an end to another lovely evening. Before we parted we planed to go there once more next weekend and this time we plan to stay there for the night.
