Hello all, So here we are, the South Island of Beautiful New Zealand...but more on that later, i first have to fill you all in on my day in Nelson. So after i took care of all the blog updating and picture uploading etc, i entered the stream of locals and tourists that make their way through Wellington. As far as NZ city goes, Wellington is tops,by far better than Auckland. It has more character and is so easy to walk everywhere!! Big Bonus!! So i explored on foot... first making my way through Cuba Street, where the shops are plentiful, the people colorful, and the food very eclectic and ethnic. Then it was on to visit the great TePapaMuseum, which is the highlight and must see in Wellington, and although it was an amazing day,i have ... read more

So. Lets see. I finished work on Sunday and after several changes of plans was totally undecided about what to do next. I was literally sitting on my couch Monday afternoon completely immobilized by indecision when my friend Leyla stopped by to say good bye and ask if I wanted a ride to over the hill to Nelson in one hour. I looked at the piles of still to be packed belongings strewn around my room and wished they would jump into my pack Mary Poppins style. Leyla seemed to sense by lethargic mood and said brightly, "the best way to leave is spontaneously". And so, an hour later I was off over the winding hill that separates Golden Bay from the rest of the world. I texted some friends I had made in a hostel ... read more

After the long drive from Humner Springs via Westport to Nelson and the last few days in South Island. Picton next stop for Ferry. Nelson was disappointing in it’s interest for me, managed to get diary fairly up to date I then moved to Picton to get the ferry to Wellington on the 15th Feb. Picton a pretty port, at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, the gateway to the South or vice versa to Wellington. Most people travel the other way North Island 1st then the South, all the guide books are that way edited but Phileas is different .It was the same in Australia everyone went north Phileas went South. Just like airlines the ferry was late leaving. I was not aware that it takes 3hours to do the crossing, 1 hour alone to ... read more

The next morning Liz was complaining about seeing little bugs around her bed and she had some really nasty bites on her which looked really angry. However we had to get going so vowed to deal with it later and then took advantage of the free breakfast the hostel puts on. Outside we got picked up for our trip into the Happy Valley to do the sky wire. When there, we kind of got talked into quad biking so rather than being driven up to the hire wire, we quad biked up. Neither of us had done this before and it turned out to be really fun; revving up the dirt tracks towards the summit, round corners and over rocky ground. We stopped a few times for mini trips into the undergrowth to look and ... read more

The next morning was ferry time. We took a 3 1/2 hour ferry from the North to South Island. That was a good sleep. We got into Picton and ran around for a while. There was an amazing park there that was fun to walk through. Then it was back to the vans for 2 hours more of driving... The drive was awesome; the coast of the North Island is the most mountainous I've seen so far; we drove crazy curvey roads down the sides of tree-covered mountains into valleys that went on forever. I loved it. We eventually made it to Nelson, which is my favorite place so far. It's an different atmosphere here; it's really fun, but also really relaxed; it's a bit of a boho town I think. The shops are amazing and ... read more

Can you say spirit ? This main street has performers every 3rd door, outdoor vendors, and happy people everywhere ! Its very touristy during the day, lots of lookers and shoppers and walkers, but still a lovely atmosphere. I met a very friendly couple who run Bluebird Charters, doing fishing charters out of Nelson. Very nice people, I recomend looking them up if you are into some deep blue fishing ! Hostels. Accents on the Park Lodge....my rating 90% One of the top three hostels I have stayed at now, in fact it is probably the #1 in the top three, which would make it the best hostel I have been at. (been a long day already, I no makey mucho cents! haha) Anyway, thats the place to stay if you are a adventure or sightseeing ... read more

I've finally got round to adding photo's to the other entries! We completed the Queen Charlotte Track in 3 days, during which we had the loveliest weather we've had in NZ. The walk was pretty tiring, but the views were absolutely spectacular! Having finished it we were contemplating not doing any more walks due to blisters, but now that they've healed we want to do a walk in the Abel Tasmin National Park, except now the weather has gone down hill and I hurt my knee on the last walk (where was my Inca stick when I needed it?!). So the new plan is to go sea kayaking around the area instead - lets just hope the rain stays off for a bit! We travelled down to Blenheim after our walk (the heart of the Malbourgh ... read more

When I arrived in Nelson I was feeling a tad blue. After spending two weeks or so surrounded by people and friends at Mt Cook and the New Years drum and bass festival and then a few days recovering at John's family's house on the water (of which I have no pictures because I left my camera in a friends car at the festival and it took a few days to get it back), it felt strange to be alone again. I spent three days in Nelson before coming to the conclusion that I was broke and either had to find work or go home (neither of which sounded grand) and (after choosing the former as being the lesser of two evils....not that home is evil but you know what I mean) taking a bus to ... read more

The 3 hour ferry crossing to the South Iswland of Nelson was easy and from there I picked up the Stray bus to Nelson. What a place and the backpackers was awesome too - Paradiso. Such a shame I only had 1 night to stay as I'm in a hurry to get to Moteuka for my skydiving course near the Abel Tasman National Park. Nelson has a fantastic beach and party scene with trance parties regularly kicking off. ... read more
