Darlings we have had the best day - whales! just amazing - the boat was cool - although as predicted no bar - not big enough! Lovely crew, fast boat - and the sun was shining - it was warm. Just totally blown away by seeing whales, they are amazing creatures, we saw three different whales - all sperm whales. Just can’t get over how huge they are, massively heavy, and amazingly graceful as they dive down, it’s brilliant watching them prepare to dive, their heads are so heavy and they manouevre till they literally stand on their head! We got really close and was too mesmerised to panic! We were lucky ‘cos on the way back we saw loads of dolphins! and a huge albatross - who apparently weigh as much as an average dog ... read more

Hi Darlings, Well NZ has started to work better, been on some lovely walks - until jb’s bod seized up! The ferry, which I was dreading was fab! yes luvs I really enjoyed the ferry. They had 2 bars, a shop and a theatre showing Walk the Line - how fab is that? Watched the lovely scenery with glass of wine and then as night fell the moon on the water was magical. We stayed at Picton which was so pretty, the people were friendly! Set off for Kaikoura, the drive was really wonderful scencery, driving along by the sea thought I saw a seal, stopped the car at the next layby and there was a seal colony. So cute - baby seals playing in rock pools, others laying and rolling around the beach. Turned the ... read more

Here in Kaikoura I actually made contact with the most intelligent beings on the planet. Yes, I swam with dolphins. They must have thought we were bl**dy loopy though: dressed head to foot in black neoprene (I really cannot get enough of this stuff), including a hood - yet more practise for my James Bond girl role, plus snorkel, mask and flippers, we splashed around in the water trying to be as dolphin-like as possible and making strange noises through our snorkels. Apparently dolphins like it - they probably like having a jolly good laugh at our expense. One of the guys said all he could think of was to sing Kanye West's "Goldigga" through his snorkel. The dusky dolphins must have been Hip Hop/R n B or whatever fans, as it seemed to work. Kaikoura ... read more

Kaikoura is one of those towns that is umbilically linked to the to tourist industry. Like Agra without it's Taj Mahal, Ayre's without it's Rock or Everest without it's Mount, travellers would view Kaikoura only through the windows of their passing vehicles if it wasn't for the plethora of sea creatures that live just off it's shores. I had it on good authority that of all the town's attractions, the swimming with dolphins was the one not to be missed. Back in the '80s, my solitary letter to Jim'll Fix It begged of my desire to be a ballboy at Celtic Park but predictably fell on deaf ears. Jewellery-obsessed old freak. However, perhaps my letter merely got mixed up in the post with some little girl from Dudley or the like, as here I was with ... read more

On or way back to Picton we stayed a night in Kaikoura. This is the whale-watching capital of New Zealand. Altough the sparkeling sea mocked us for some time with fluke-like images far of in the distance, we didn't see a whale. So made some other stupid tourist stare out to the water by telling them where we had just seen the whale and left for the penguin- and seal-colony. Those animals are more reliable and usually can be expected to be there. Some tourists around the seals acted pretty annoying. They tried to pull at a sleeping seal's tail until he was awake, angry and nearly bit them. The seal should have chased them right into the water...... read more

Keep this quiet, but I think the Germans are planning to take over NZ!! They have an expeditionary force over here right now posing as tourists but I don't buy it. They are everywhere! Got to warn you this might get a little long cause we were out of the loop for a while. After kissing the sheep good-bye we left our paddock heading south for Papakure were we intended to quickly catch a bus for Taupo so we could watch the Ironman the next day. I won't bore you with the details but it was one of those days when not one thing goes your way. We arrived in Taupo at 1:30 am found a campsite and crashed. Got up the next day to 65Km winds from the south ( south = Cold ) and ... read more

How y’all doin? Kiss ma grits honey! Britney and Kev, step into the shadows and welcome the new breed of White Trash that’s just driven into town. Well, it’s only natural that we have to live the lifestyle now that we are moseying round NZ in our motorhome, living in trailer parks, sweetcakes! We’ve now had Beryl for almost a week and it’s actually been excellent so far. We feel like little snails with our home on our back as we meander our way across country, stopping off where we like, when we like, making a cup of tea at the side of the road - or even beans on toast if we’re feeling reckless and dangerous. The day we picked her up - we had to go find some basic necessities for Beryl - therefore ... read more

Arrived at Sunrise Lodge backpackers in the late afternoon and booked a whale watch tour for a 7.15am start. Ouch! The trip was almost cancelled due to high winds, but they got us out luckily, and it was great. We saw 3 enormous Sperm Whales - the boat got really close. We watched them logging (doing a convincing impression of a log floating on the water), spouting water into the air and finally diving back down with a magnificant tail flip. Was really unreal to think we were so close to such vast and fabulous creatures. Despite all the whaling that has taken place (more the end of the last century up to 1950s in NZ) they are remarkably trusting of the boats coming along side them - esp since they could flick us out of ... read more

The Catlins So, after Robert (my German surf buddy) and I arranged to go to the Catlins over Christmas - 6 weeks later we finally pulled our fingers out and made the trip, dragging along a random assortment of companions for the jaunt. As I’m becoming accustomed (and in fact addicted to) I did very little planning, other than making sure that everyone had a tent & sleeping bag, and I’d got my wetsuit & board (and my new addition to the “can’t leave home without it” list - my cards & poker chips set). Without even looking at a map (I say that like the dorky teenager in my last blog - I’m practically giving myself two thumbs up in the mirror for being so cool - I am so living on the edge man) ... read more

Thank goodness for that. And only $90 or so too. I was on the road again just after 9 this morning so have made it to Kaikoura. Weather looking dubious for swimming tomorrow though! Perhaps I will look for a flight to see whales instead or as well. Happy St David's Day to one and all!... read more
