Long drive to Christchurch via Arthur's Pass to swop over vehicles. Kissed goodbye to our wagon - least we get our own shower from here on in. Now we have an automatic 4WD (in white, incase the ladies are interested). Tis much easier to reverse without cooker/taps in the way. Headed for Kaikoura. Obviously t'was a kiss of death mentioning our plans to whale watch. Despite warm sunshine our 3.30pm trip was cancelled as rough weather was coming in. Booo. Got ourselves on the 6.45am trip the following morning but didn't fancy our chances ... Stayed at The Old Convent in Kaikoura that evening. Unique. Quirky. Remote. Tranquil. Very popular with the olds (oi!). Stayed in Mother Superior's Room (she was out) and made the most of the novelty ready-made bed and ensuite facilities. Over a ... read more

Hey Everybody. It may seem to you that all we're doing is sitting in front of a computer adding blog entries but its raining right now so we have an excuse. Plus the computer we were on yesterday wouldn't let us upload photos and we really wanted to get a couple of photos on the site. Yesterday we drove to Kaikoura in our Spaceship. Our spaceship is called Baker. They name each one. They are actually very cool. They have a huge water container and pump and a gas grill and the bed is decently sized. Pictured is Michelle cooking some yummy supper. Kaikoura is a small oceanside town mostly driven by tourism where you can go whale watching, check out the Seal Colony, or do what did this morning; go swimming with Dusky Dolphins! The ... read more

This is an amazing town! It a little more touristy but that happens when there is so much going on. Jason, Ryan, Jo, Jordan, Kate and I all took a road trip about 2 hr north of Lincoln to Kaikoura. First day was a little cloudy and glum, but we made the most of it by walking by the water, sitting on a pier playing gee-tar, swinging off the pier (not me but Ryan) trying to catch seagulls, trying to find cheap crayfish (new Zealand form of lobster) same price as lobster too!! We never ended up getting any (sad). But we did go to this little Irish pub out in the middle of a sheep pasture, it was okay, there was a wedding going on, we unsuccessfully tried to get in. But we did end ... read more

Hi everyone, As you can see we are down at Kaikoura on the East Coast. We travelled down from Picton to Moteuka near Nelson middle of last week; it peed with rain the whole way! Great pity as we know from previous experience the views are usually quite spectacular as the road takes you up over the mountains. Can't win them all. As we got nearer to Nelson we started looking for camp sites ... we could write a book about 'camp sites we have known and loved ... or not'). I'd picked one out of the guide which looked quite promising and fortunately we decided we'd check loos, showers etc before booking in. Showers were communal, nothing unusual, we had met these before with individual cubicles. Not this time!! I strolled into the communal area ... read more

Mon 6th. I was so disappointed at missing the whale trip that Jim has rearranged our schedule so that we can stay another 2 days, It's no haedship because this is a beautiful place. South American type mountains and a white tipped ocean crashing onto the beach. Albeit a black pebbly beach , with no swimming allowed. We are on the 2nd boat trip of the day to try and see the whales, so this means getting up at 5:30 am. It had better be worth it. We hang around at the whaling station till 7:30, waiting for the sea to calm down and then we board the bus to be taken to the harbour. In no time at all the catamaran is in open waters and they lower a microphone to listen for the whales. ... read more

'Waitangi Day' is a day set aside by the New Zealand Government as a 'public holiday' to be observed throughout the country as a 'national day of thanksgiving in commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi’ in 1840 between Mäori and the British Crown. We silently thanked the four Labour-Ratana Maori representatives that initially proposed the holiday in 1957, and made plans for our three-day bonanza. We decided to head 150 kilometres north up the rumpled east coast to Kaikoura. Meaning “feast of crayfish”, Kaikoura is on a peninsula perched between the towering 2600 metre high seaward Kaikoura Range Mountains and the depths of the Kaikoura Canyon abyss. The Kaikoura Canyon plunges as deep as 6,705 metres beneath the sea, nurturing a prolific marine environment. It is the home of the Giant Squid ... read more

Fri. 3rd. Today is the75th anniversary of the earthquake so may be it's a good day to leave town. The scenery on the way to Wellington is mostly mundane, with the odd bit of interest. Unfortunately, we couldn't book any accommodation in the city bexcause the Rugby sevens are on and rooms are at a premium until next weekend. We would have loved to stay as the whole place is buzzing - supporters dressed in togas walked happily along with men in chinese clothes, complete with fake pigtails, and a heady mix of everything else in between. It was so funny seeing them walking together into the stadium. No rest for the wicked - so off we go on the ferry to Picton, to start our South Island adventure. The ship is modern, and the 3 ... read more

Sat.28th. Walked around the thermal park and watched the geysers bubbling away. Every so often the ground collapses and yet another geyser appears, hurriedly enclosed by fencing, until a more permanent defence is constructed. There are foot baths in the park where you can sit and paddle in the warm water,.. bliss. All too soon, it's time to catch our bus to Whakatane, and see what this part of the world has to offer. The scenery was ok, the lake impressive, and our home for the next 2 nights, LLoyd's Lodge, was very homely and comfortable. After dinner we walked by the river and around the neighbourhood, and concluded that this is yet another dead place. Where is everybody? Sun. 29th. To get to a good beach is a 3 hour walk over Koti Point hill, ... read more

Fri. 27th. At 5:30, we were collected from our lodge and taken to a Maori settlement for, hopefully, a unique evening. Hundreds of us sat in a marquee, waiting for dusk, and being entertained, by what we are sure is, a scouse Maori. His humour was terrific. Then the "tribe of 20 nations" (us) were taken into the forest to be frightened half to death by the Maori tribal dance, and thoroughly entertained by their customs. Then back to the marquee, where the "hangi" had finished cooking, and had been taken out of the hole in the ground, and thankfully put on plates for us to eat. As much lamb, chicken, etc. etc. as you could eat plus delicious deserts. We were then given torches, and taken to see their sacred stream, surrounded by Gloworms, really ... read more

I decided to spend a night in Queenstown and did a hike up to the gondola where there's a luge to have a go on and a chance to take corners on two wheels. Also no policemen around to check your speed (I recently saw 4 different cars on the same day!) The views from the top were great and I got a free ride down in the gondola (cablecar) as no one was checking tickets :-) Next day I headed off to tackle an overnight trek up the Rees-Dart track. I went up the River Dart and there was some wonderful views of the river and nearby Mount Earnslaw which I am told provided film locations for Isengard for "The Lord of the Rings." I stayed overnight in a hut and then came back the ... read more
