Lake
A lake that we walked by! Since we left the North Island on Monday, we have been pretty busy doing plenty of things...
Monday we spent most of our day on the ferry getting across to the South Island, and then caught a new Kiwi Bus to take us from Picton (where the ferry docks) to Nelson (the town we were staying in). When we got to Nelson, we (Mel, me, Floris, Andrew and another girl) wandered around town and finally found a supermarket to buy our dinner from....
We got back to the hostel in time for the free beer tasting at 5:30, and that was good, would have been better if they were pint glasses not shot glasses! But, it was free, so we can't complain...
Tuesday we set off to Wesport, and there was a walk that we did along the edge of a lake, and another one near an old gold mine, they were nice little walks, that didn't take too long. Then when we got to Westport, we went horse riding for around 2 hours. We went across fields and then down to the second largest river in the Southern Hemisphere, and we had a bit of a canter
Lauren on Luke
Me riding Luke the horse! along the sand near the river. We then headed up through some bush and then we had the chance to gallop across a field. Mel and another guy (Jake) did a bit of jumping, as they were the best riders there. We rode back to the stables through a smaller river.
We had a BBQ that night, which only cost us $3 (around 1.50 pounds)!! It was nice, especially at that price...
Wednesday we set off to Lake Mahinapua, and on the way, we stopped off at a place called Pancake Rocks, and did a couple of walks along there. They were quite cool, and there were some blowholes, where water and air get blown out of holes in the rocks.
We did the first round of 'Bus Olympics' early in the day, and this game consisted of passing a pretzel down and up the length of the coach using only matchsticks held in your mouth.... Interesting! Our team (the pregnant old ladies) won by miles, and therefore won a free drink from the other team (the fantastic performing monkeys).
We were told about the theme for the party, which was guys dressing up as girls,
Mel on Leroy
Mel riding Leroy the horse, just before her jumping... and the girls had to make clothes out of anything but material... It was very interesting...
We stopped at Greymouth to get supplies for our costumes, and Mel and I helped three guys, Andrew, Jake and Paul get dresses from charity shops, and then got foil and bin liners for ourselves. Andrew - Mel says 'you are by far the most gorgeous guy I have ever met, so don't worry 😊'
On the way to the pub, we had the second round of the bus olympics, called 'coach surfing'. I was the surfboard for our team, and it consisted of being passed to the back of the coach and back to the front while laying on my back! SIMPLE! Or not, as I was dropped alot, and banged my head a few times, and we still lost! GRR...
We got to the pub that we were staying at, and we had some venison, steak, salad and potatoes for dinner. It was nice... Mel had the vegetarian option, because she didn't want to eat poor Bambi! I did! HA! Take that Bambi!
We got dressed up, and helped the boys with their make-up, and then headed to
Coastline Walk
One of the walks from Wesport to Mahinapua the bar. We played the deciding round of the Olympics, which was a 'Boat Race'. Basically every team member downing a drink and first team to down everything wins! That was US! YAY! PREGNANT OLD LADIES RULE!
We stayed in the bar until around 2am, when we all went down to the lake (700m away in the pitch black, with only glowworms to guide us)! It was freezing... I only went in to my ankles, but Mel went in to her thighs, and Andrew just went for a swim! CRAZY!
We finally got to bed at around 3am, and Mel and I had to keep turning the heating back on when the guys turned it off.... GRR!
Mel says 'Andrew it was like being in your room.'
