Well its been over 6 months since we first arrived back in Blenheim, and now our time is running short. With just a few days until we start our homeward journey. Both our jobs now finished, leaves us just the bittersweet task of saying our goodbyes to all the great people we have been fortunate enough to meet here and have each helped make Blenheim feel like home. When we first arrived, back in November, we were incredibly broke, and in desperate need of work. The vast amount of vineyard work available led us to our first employment in Blenheim. Though the work wasn't exactly taxing, the sheer mundane nature of the job, meant that the 2 week break we had in Australia for Christmas was all the more appreciated. When we got back, it was ... read more

Blenheim 12th - 15th April The main thing we wanted to do in Blenheim was to hire bikes and cycle around the wineries. We hired bikes from our campsite and cycled about 10 kms to Renwick where most of the wineries are. It was lovely flat cycling (I don't do hills, unless they go downwards!), but the roads were busier than we thought. I had envisaged lovely quiet country roads, but even the minor roads had quite a few lorries on them. Still, the wineries were great. We visited five where we forced ourselves to take part in the free wine tasting on offer (what a hardship). We picnicked in the garden of one of the wineries in gorgeous sunshine. By the time we got to the fifth winery we were 'all wined out', as Rob ... read more

25th April 2009 A long days drive! We set off from our beach resort and headed first to Cape Foulwind (they have great names for everything over here!) to visit the local seal colony. Apparently we are here at a great time as the pups are being nurtured toward independence, which meant we got to see them 'running' around and playing with each other! Despite their great comouflage, we got to see huge numbers which was cool. Leaving the west coast, we headed in-land along Buller Gorge, which would - in various forms - take us(eventually) all the way to the east coast. Concerned about fuel we called into the township of Murchison where we stocked up - us and Nev - before carrying on south east towards our destination for the night, Hanmer Springs. Our approach to the Awatere Valley was a twisty trip along a narrow licorice ribbon road that entwined itself about the main south railway line around successive folds in the hills. These hills were of ochres, yellow and sand hues, their dry stalks of yellowed grass waving in the in hot noon breeze. The extreme dryness of the hillsides was a stark contrast to a sea of well-watered grapes that spread in lush green rows across the valley floor and up onto the lower slopes. It was a sudden, striking change in hue and texture. Awatere Valley is award-winning wine-producing country and it seemed that every land owner there had his or her obligatory vineyard. Except, it seemed, for Oaktree Cottage, a lovely little place nestled among the growers. Historic Oak Tree Cottage is home to ... read more

Well its been about 1 month since arriving in New Zealand, so whats been happenning?. As stunning as Queentown was the whole finding work situation was proving a little tricky for both James and myself. Even fruit picking/farm work in the area was in really short supply. Something i must be honest supprised me and started to worry me some what aswell. So we decided to throw caution to the wind and take a 2 day trip from bottom, to the top of the south island, to the quiet town of Blenheim. Here we immediatly found some work on a vinyard...PHEW!. Definitly not as exciting or enjoyable as "Banana Humping" but its been a souce of work and a chance of experiencing another unique job in a very beutiful place, aswell as the chance to mix ... read more

We left Picton when we got back because there was nowhere to stay and headed to Blenheim. It was a small town, although alot bigger then Picton, and there didn't seem like much to do. We stayed the night and then headed to Nelson the next day.... read more

Sitting here in the late afternoon sun at Picton (more lack of imagination from the early NZ white settlers, just as in Australia) it is hard to believe that we haven’t talked about some of the things we have seen and done during the last week. I will run through some of this in a moment. First, though, in the interest of fair dealing, we really should lay out some of those minor things that sometimes frustrate or that are a bit strange for us. Let us start with rest/picnic areas. Most possibly wouldn’t see this as an issue but we are used to travelling long distances and we don’t normally eat ‘road’ tucker. We take our food with us and we make our lunch along the way, consuming it in picnic areas or road side ... read more

Tomorrow we leave the South for the North Island, so we've only about a week until we leave New Zealand. We've loved it here so far, but we're also quite looking forward to getting rid of the campervan now. There are only so many nights you can stay in semi-deserted campsites on the edge of town, before you long for a decent bed in a decent hotel smack bang in the heart of the city! Tonight we're staying in Blenheim, and despite being in the heart of wine country, this is a pretty small and dare I say it, backward place. In fact this is the second dodgy little place we've stayed since our long drive north. When we arrived we stayed in Motueka, which sounded OK but actually shut up for the night at about ... read more
