Hi, well we left Janet and Ian's house this morning after coffee and bacon sandwich, we had a great time hanging out with them. We headed to Blenheim which was next on the list, this is wine country! lovely, vineyards everywhere ! It was one of those funny days where we couldn't get it right. It was pouring with rain when we left Nelson, gloomy sky, not sure if it was a bit of Cyclone Pam, as that was supposed to hit a bit of the North Island, east Side, not where we were, but you never know !! Anyhow we arrived at our motel, took a couple of hours drive, motel very nice, cleared out the car because it was a right heap ! We have bags of washing, will have to do that boring ... read more

Before leaving Rotorua we stopped off at Wai O Tapu to visit another geothermal park. Tom wanted to see the Lady Knox Geyser which erupts at 10.15 everyday. It was only when a warden appeared with a microphone and put a packet of detergent into the mouth of the geyser that we understood why it erupted at the same time everyday! Tom was mightily peeved!! From Rotorua we drove south to the capital of New Zealand, Wellington to spend 4 night of R&R in YHA Wellington - this travelling is hard work you know!! This is luxury hosteling and comparable to many hotel rooms we have stayed in for twice the price. We had a double room with queen sized bed, wet room, tv, tea and coffee making facilities with a cafetière and a bag of ... read more

Spent a few hours relaxing today at Hamner Springs; lots of geothermal pools at different temperatures, absolute bliss, even though the sulphur pools were a bit stinky. Also a few water slides here to keep the girls and Stuart happy! Back to the coast to Kaikoura, then followed the coast road up to Blenheim, passing hundreds of seals, just metres from where we were standing. Really entertaining watching them. Freya decided some of the biggest ones were real bullies! The drive into Blenheim was incredible, miles and miles and miles of vineyards stretching in every direction, can certainly see why the Marlborough region is so well known. Found a great place to stay called the Vintners Retreat surrounded by vineyards. When we arrived we all played tennis and then had a refreshing swim in the pool. ... read more

After a few days exploring around the eastern coast of New Zealand, I made a concious decision to head up a little more north into one of the more popular regions of the South Island. The reason why this region, being the Marlborough region is popular is plain and simple because of an alcoholic beverage that they produce in vast quantity to an extraordinarily high quality. This beverage is nothing less than wine. Whether it because Sparkling White or perhaps a Sauvignon Blanc for the more refined pallet, Marlborough in the last decade has taken a major step forward on the global stage when it comes down to this lascivious beverage, having won some major awards at such events like the Paris show, which for wines there is no higher honour possible. And in the Marlborough ... read more

Hi everyone - now in South Island. Before we left North Island we spent the day at Te Papa Museum, Wellington. Last time we were here we did the three lower floors this time we started at the top and did the other 3 floors - an amazing museum dedicated to Maori history, early settlers and pioneers as well as the fauna, flora and geology of New Zealand. We got there at10.00 and left for lunch at 5.00 !! Caught the ferry on Saturday and en route saw an article on a 1-day tour of Molesworth Station (which was on our wish list) so made the call and booked up for the next day. Geoff & Lee the organisers invited us to camp at their place as it was an early start. We camped in their ... read more

Wow what a weekend and we all did it. We all extended ourselves, with 9 of us doing the 42k Taster ride and 3 girls did the 101k - we had so much fun. Thousands of contestants and we all did faster times than we thought we would do. The boys all want to come back next year to do the 101k ride, the girls want to come back again to do the 42k ride and to collect their Magnum of wine which is offered to those who compete the following year.... read more

We left Kaikoura on Thursday 17th Jan and headed North towards Blenheim which is at the top of the South Island. We decided to change our accomodation style and moved away from the motor home / motels that we had been staying in and instead chose a private homestead with small a camping ground with a 'bach' (like a small cabin or cottage) These are normally in grounds with shared kitchen facilities so we could also cook our own meals as eating out in NZ has been a disappointment.... either expensive or rubbish or usually both! After all the travelling and a pretty intense itinery to date we were ready to just rest! So, we stocked up on provisions and drove the relatively short distance along the coast to Blenheim. We had already covered 2,000km since ... read more

Travelled to the South Island today. Checked in early for the ferry in Wellington so mananaged to spend an hour or so walking along the harbour. The ferry terminal is right in the centre of the city and the harbour is full of restaraunts etc. They had a market held in an underground carpark right in the city centre. The ferry journey took about 3hrs. You guys all thought I was brave but not as adventurous as a German couple I met; they were on a cycling/hiking holiday with a 6mth old baby. Completely mad is what I thought!! The ferry terminal in Picton was a bit of a contrast to Wellington, Picton is about the same size as Bardney. Staying at Bleinhiem tonight, completely surrounded by vineyards. Not sure where I am going tomorrow, that ... read more

Today we went on a Bubbly Grape full day wine tour of the Marlborough region - we went to 6 wineries (Cloudy Bay, Saint Clair, Withers Hill, Villa Maria, Bouldevines and Bladen) and the boutique chocolate factory, along with a delicious lunch platter... We were pleasantly surprised with the variety of the wines - this region certainly doesn't only do Sauvignon Blancs! We had some really nice Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir! A great day...... read more
