New Zealand – Wk 4 Monday 30th Jan A comfortable night was had in our little wooden hut and we woke to a fine sunny morning. No hurry to get up today so morning tea was taken whilst in ones pit finishing off a very good book and talking to family on Skype. Once up and had breakfast we walked into Hanmer centre and found the Spa building along the main street. In we went and purchased entry to the Spa pools and half hour each in a private Sauna all for the sum of $63.00. We realised after we had left later in the day we were charged for only one of us, it should of been $126.00, oh well, Snooze you lose. The complex is made up of ten or so small to medium ... read more

Kayaking Abel Tasman Park today.....started out in Marahau with Abel Tasman Marahau Sea Kayak Company........my instructor, Hanna, was brilliant.......a pretty thorough briefing on safety, etc., turned out to be essential! The seas where from the south which meant they are not calm! Every picture you see on a brochure or magaizine is bullshit! lol......anyway, went from Marahau to Observation Beach....didn't seem far...........again, bullshit..... came ashore on a beautiful beach called Stillwell Bay......success and great sandy beach........launched, again success.........came ashore for the second time on Observation Beach........holy shit......huge waves and rolled it......quickly took me under and swamped the kayak......dragged it to shore and started "sea water removal".......giggle time........what a hoot........after that experience wondering how the hell to get off this isla... read more

Hello everyone! Hope you all had a fantastic Christmas! We woke up to a cracking sunny day, and decided to start it off with a swim in the sea! Apparently the sea temperatures here are around 22 degrees, but it felt very cold! Still went for a swim though - it'd be rude not to! The rest of the day flew by in a flash, great food, presents were awesome and even managed to squeeze in an afternoon Christmas film! Today (boxing day) we took a sea taxi to Abel Tasman national park where we went for a short walk to find a picture perfect deserted beach. Usually this area is very busy at this time of year but the recent storms seem to have made it very quiet! Had a picnic on the beach, read ... read more

10.12.2011 Only 15 days until Christmas!!! wooo. Back on the Kiwi Bus this morning and joined by Jess, Lizzy, Emily and Amy!! Straight onto the ferry to take us from the North Island to the South Island, it took 3 hours to get to Picton, 45 minutes of which spent looking at the young calves in transport below us. They squeezed 12 calves in each tiny compartment, I just hope they were going to greener pastures! We arrived at Kaiteriteri a small seaside resort, where my Dad apparently lived for a year! We arrived about 4pm so went for a quick walk along the beach and as the tide was out we went exploring the rock pools, finding lots of mussels and cats eyes. Me and michael then went for a game of mini golf, I ... read more

After leaving Taupo we drove to the Tongariro Alpine crossing where others got kitted up for the 6-7 hour walk. Luckily the weather was with us & we got there in time so we set off & had glorious views from the top of the mountains & the emerald lakes. It was scenery from Lord of the Rings, stunning. After that long hike there was a well deserved soak in the hot tube before dinner. The next day, after a lie in, we went to the Blue duck lodge, which is in the middle of nowhere but very beautiful. I went for a walk to see the old depot used in that area & saw the blue ducks. When we tried to get out of there the next morning, our path was blocked by a fallen ... read more

The track was really extraordinary. It was quite chilly for most of the time and threatened rain, but through some brilliant maneuvering we made it through dry. The first night we stayed in the Anchorage hut and checked out some nice watering holes called Cleopatra pools, where we also happened upon a rather naked couple. Whoops. The Bark Bay hut was next and was the nicest with hardwood floors and spacious rooms, but was super crowded with people. We slept in our room with mostly Germans. The next day was our first high tide crossing, which we made easily. On to the Awaroa hut where there was hardly anyone! Hurray! Our final day we made the final easy trek to Totorauni where we caught a water taxi back. It was marvelous. We saw seals and penguins ... read more
