Abel Tasman is a walkers and kayakers paradise. Remote bushland, beautiful isolated beaches, and crystal clear waters. We joined a day trip from Marahau beach and took a water taxi to Torrent Bay and kitted out the boats with BBQ gear for lunch as well as much needed sustainance on the 2 hour paddle (lots of biscuits!!). The remote park juts out onto the blue ocean isolated from the reached of the mainland. The difficulty of access has led to the stunning preservation of pristine beaches and stunning cliff views as you kayak your way across the headlands accompanied only by the sounds of water lapping past you, and the occasional seal and pup barking! The rather limited barbie lunch was completely forgotten after our return to HQ on a trailer behind a tractor and ... read more

For those of you who think you need time to plan a trip over here, Kaye booked her flights at the end of January and until Saturday night we had no plans at all for our jolly. In honour of St Paddy himself we sought inspiration from a bottle of Jamiesons and it all worked out pretty well. We had a great few days pottering around the south island: Kaikoura for whale watching, harassing some seals & horse trekking. Hanmer Springs for a soak in some stinky thermal water & a laze in the sun. West Coast (AND it was sunny all the way) for Punakaiki Rocks & stunning coast line, including a cold paddle & unexpected drenching by a big wave. Marahau in the Abel Tasman national park for some kayaking & general splashing ... read more

OK, I'll start where Verity left off, her birthday! We got up Friday morning to bright sunshine, a great start to the day. Verity rang her parents, we treated ourselves to breakfast (actually the milk had gone off so we had to!) and then we headed off for our day of fun! First we went Zorbing which was brilliant and as it was sunny we weren't too upset about getting soaking wet! We did one run together and then as a birthday treat Verity had a go on her own. In the afternoon we relaxed in some outdoor hot pools at the Polynesian Spa in Rotorua and in the evening we went out for a lovely dinner of New Zealnd Lamb accompanied by a fair bit of Alchohol despite being turned away from a backpackers bar ... read more

The next morning the five of us were all a little less cocky about our impending skydive & breakfast was a pretty quiet affair (although all the bottles of wine the night before might also have had something to do with that) as we waited to get picked up by the skydiving guy to get taken to the airfield so we could all jump out of a plane at 13,000ft on a perfectly clear sunny Sunday morning over the Abel Tasman National Park...what else would you do on a sunny sunday morning in New Zealand?! We actually weren't as nervous as we all thought we would be on the drive over to the skydiving centre, the guys driving was probably scarier at the time as he went flying round corners and careering along the windy ... read more

As we were staying in the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park at Old MacDonalds Farm for 2 nights I got a bit of a lie in on the Saturday morning before I met up with some of the new guys that had joined us on the bus in Picton to go for a walk along the coast through the National Park to some of it's stunning little beaches. Me, Lisa from Ireland, Ryan from Canada & Francesco from Germany (who was feeling a bit hungover thanks to a big box of Goon as they call it in Australia (really cheap wine in a box) that he was drinking the night before) set off to the information centre to find out where to go & we decided that as the nicest beach was about a 3 ... read more

Julie and I decided to figure out how to drive here (finally). I'm so glad we finally did it because I had the best weekend. We managed to see all the highlights of the north east side of the island. We can't wait to do it again!... read more

Hello again from Nelson. By most peoples standards, i had a true vacation day today ... meaning: i slept in (8 am, is sleeping in these days) , went to a really cool little cafe for a huge omlette and two flat whites, packed my backpack with the ever essential sunscreen, bikini and towel and my book and headed off to the beach. Yes, that is right, i had a lazy, uneventful, no activities kind of day on the beach. It felt great and it gave my body a great chance to recover from the events of the previous two days... the seakayking and hiking in Abel Tasman NP. Since i know it is a lot more intersting to read about adventures, then lazy days on the beach.. , here it goes . After another very ... read more

Yesterday we travelled to the South Island, catching an early ferry to Picton. From there we went to Abel Tasman national park. It was quite a lot of travelling but we stopped off in the Marlborough vineyard area, at Hunters for some wine tasting. We are staying in Marahau which is at the south of Abel Tasman NP at Old Macdonalds Farm. This is a really cool place. There are loads of animals running about - lots of lamas and small birds. I hand-fed several ducks, chickens and a peacock(!) some of my chips! There are a lot of options for activities here but Shashi and I decided to sea Kayak. I haven't done it before so was excited but a bit scared as the guide seemed very professional and is ex-army so was super bossy ... read more

So after the crazy skydiving adventure, I got to go to one of the top beach spots in the world (which I saw from 13,000 ft., yay skydiving), Abel Tasman. It's a crazy beach jungle area that is absolutely gorgeous. However, the adventure did not start well... PC2 split into two groups, one that was taking the hiking trail in and then sea kayaking out and then the other group went vice versa. My group was set to hike there, so we dropped off the kayakers at Abel Tasman Kayaks, only to find out that we had to go through a 4 hour safety course before we could leave; this was only made better once we met our instructor: a know-it-all douchebag who was so rude to us that 4 people out of our 9 person ... read more
