The South Island: Abel Tasman National Park English (Lisa) 20/1 Camping Ground, Car, Ferry, Car, Bethany’s Christian Camp We travelled an awful lot this day. At 5.30 p.m. we arrived at a camping ground, which turned out to be a Christian one. Both of us thought that we’d finally become used to the Kiwi accent. That was until we reached this place. The sentence ‘d’you want the ice in a bag?’ had to be repeated three times in the supermarket before I finally understood it. All vowels are pronounced in a very funny way - especially the ‘i’ and ‘a’/’e’/’ea’. Related to that question, what’s quite strange is that everywhere in New Zealand they pack your groceries in thin, black, plastic bags for you. They must go through tons of those each year. 21/1 Coast Walk ... read more

Day 17 Friday Exercise today – a boat trip up the coast in the Abel Tasman park then a 8km. walk before the boat picks us up. No jetties – the boat grounds on the beach! The walk was terrific – a bit hilly, wending its way through unspoilt forest on the water’s edge. But half way along, we came to a suspended bridge over a ravine......... Deb – aaaaaaaaagggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!. It was like crossing the Grand Canyon on a rope bridge. There were 2 young girls ahead of us MAKING IT SWAY! We waited till they went and then Mike went ahead of me - but not too far. I did get across cos there was no option but we don’t have a photo cos I wouldn’t let Mike get further than grabbing distance – if ... read more

:) ... read more

BLOG 6, SOUTH ISLAND, WHITE VANMAN STRIKES BACK Whales, schmales, who needs them? You seen one sperm, you seen ‘em all. So dismissing our mammalian seagoing cousins, we opted heretically to leave Kaikoura without booking a tourist packet for the following day, and had to make our Big Decision -- should we head south for Queenstown and Milford Sound, thus condemning the driver, Cap’n Vanman, to 8 days of perpetual driving with no time to explore en route; or take a realistic (wimpy) view, be less ambitious and confine ourselves to the northern reaches of South Island? The latter. We headed for Hanmer Springs and spend a couple of nights there. This is a thermal spa resort in an attractive hillside and forest setting with a hint of ski resort atmosphere -- not surprising, as when ... read more

Aching arms and split apples! We arrived at our campervan site in Kaiteriteri and not a moment too soon as it was very busy. I had stopped booking us in ahead of time as we were never stuck for places to go. This time though it turns out there must have been something on, or maybe it was the forecast of great weather for the weekend, but the place was heaving. It was right on the beach with shops selling ice-cream and cafés with over priced food etc all along the edge. It reminded me of holidays in the south west but with the proper weather!! After some trouble with our pitch, (stupid foreigners parking in the wrong spot) we settled in for the night as it was an early start the next day. We were ... read more

On to the Abel Tasman National Park then. Reading from the guide book this was one of the key areas we wanted to see when we planned our trip; deserted beaches, lovely walks, turquoise waters...and we were not disappointed. It may have been a slight detour on the way to the wineries of Marlborough but well worth it. Possibly the best couple of days of the holiday (so far). Kaiteriteri is the southern most point of the national park and our campsite here is probably the busiest we have been in but still v quiet. It is also directly opposite the beach. And what a beach it is. Voted in the top five in the world apparently and it is easy to see why (in our own poll we agreed it is the second best beach ... read more

Having spent the night at a lodge run by a Dutch couple, day 15 promisses to continue the rather heavenly experience from yesterday. I have booked a place on a catamaran from Ancorage Bay back to Kaiteriteri for the afternoon, so just need to get to the starting point by lunch time. There's a road as far as Marahau, and a car park with snack bar by the National Park entrance. So, rather than walking the first 10km, I decided to drive there. Having had a good cup of coffee and asavoury muffin at the snack bar, I headed off on foot along the Abel Tasman national park walk. It was going to be a 12km hike, which I estimated would take less than 4 hours even allowing for little rests along the way. What hit ... read more

It's Monday 11th January, and day 14 of my trip. Yesterday's stormy weather has died down, which is just as well beacuse I am flying to Nelson this morning. I fear it may still be a bumpy ride though. I’ve seen a lot of great things in New Zealand, and think that today might go down as one of the highlights. I checked out of the hotel early this morning and made my way to the Airbus stop in light rain and little more than a gentle breeze. After an extended wait for an Airbus that didn’t seem to be materialising, another traveller asked if I wanted to share a taxi. In we jumped, and the first good fortune we had was that the driver forgot to switch on the meter, and when he realised his ... read more

Today we got up and went to the Miyazu Japanese Garden in Nelson, which was very small, but nice. It had small Japanese bridges and stone pathways around to different parts of the garden. There was a yin/yang garden, decorated like the symbol with grass and stones. Also there was a rock garden that we sat at and pondered for awhile. Then we went to Happy Valley Adventures where we signed up for their 3km Skywire (which they claim is the longest in the world!) Before they were ready for us, we got to go down to the river with some old bread and feed tame river eels! It was crazy. At first there was one, but soon Adam had about 8 or so in one little area eating up his bread. It also attracted a ... read more

Oct 26-29 - Labour Weekend continues... (Monday-Thursday) After saying goodbye to the Woods and Sydney, who had to return to Timaru and to school, we headed to Nelson. Wow, were we lucky with the weather. It was sunny all morning, became overcast late morning, and basically rained the rest of the day and night. We drove through Nelson, which looks like a lovely sailing community, and to the World of Wearable Arts (WOW) and Collectible Car Museum. How cool is that to have something for the men and the women:) They were both great museums and wonderful displays of talent. I am very glad we made the effort to get there! Arrived in Kaiteriteri around 6pm. We went for a quick walk on the beach before the rain started again. We also checked up on our ... read more
