So here are some more photos, think they are all fairly explanatory but here is a little A-Z in case you need some help interpreting them.
*A is for Alisdair who is the son of Toms god parents and who kindly invited us to live with him in Wellington, really looks after us showing us around Wellington and is a great cook, hooray! Also for All Blacks the NZ rugby team and a national obsession - see also Black Caps (the NZ cricket team) the All Whites (football) and the Siver Ferns (netball, they just had to be difficult didn't they).
*B is also for Bee Hive which is the name (nickname?) of the NZ parliament building which was pass every morning on the bus to work. Apparently 1/4 of all the people in Wellington work for the government, including us!
*C is for chair lift which a lot of the Wellington houses need because they are so far up the side of the really steep hills which surround the city. C is also for cable car which is still used by commuters who live up the hill to get into work.
*D is
for Dog and Bone the (ahem) traditional English pub where we watched the match and Tom managed to fit in a couple of pints before starting work - told you we were on Down-time.. (also a D word). There are plenty of England supporters around, especially as half the people in our office are British backpackers.
*E is for England, as in COME ON ENGLAND! E is also for earthquakes which are very common in Welligton, so far we have managed to sleep through the two biggest ones so have yet to experience them properly.
*F is for football which we get up/stay to watch at ungodly hours in the morning. Tom was up at 3am this morning to watch the game, liz only managed the second half, now suffering from lack of sleep at work.
*G is for Gomez the resident crazy cat who has recently got a little bit more mad as she has been put on a diet by the vet..
*H is for Hurricanes the local Rugby Union team who made the finals of the Super 14 a tournament which takes place between 14 teams in Oz, NZ and South Africa.
*I is for IRS, yes we have to pay tax here too but just found out getting a rebate, wooo hooo. Should also be able to claim the rest back when we leave the country.
*J is for Jafas, which is the what people in Auckland are called for some reason - ok, it means “just another ****ing Aucklander”.. but apologises for the bad language .
*K is for Karori the suburb of Wellington where we live. Karori has two claims to fame, 1) it is apparently the largest suburb in the southern hemisphere and 2) it is the coldest suburb in Wellington which is nice.
*L is for Lowry Bay Yacht Club which is where Liz is now racing from on Sundays, on an all female crew this time which is great.
*M is for Ministry of Education where we both work.
*N is for North Island which is where Wellington is, just. On a clear day you can see the South Island though.
*O is for Occidental pub on Lampton Quay where our team from work can be found on Friday when we usually escape the office at 3pm, they sell 'Bar Maids'
tabletop beer kegs which means that you can pour your own pint at the table.
*P is for Paula who we are living with and who is jointly responsible for making our stay in Wellington great fun. Paula is in the navy and loves her job, she has just come back from Afghanistan and is off to E Timor, phew.
*Q is Queensland, sorry to go about it but CAN’T WAIT to escape the NZ winter - we have just had the winter solstice down here, brrrr - and check out some of that Queensland sunshine.
*R is for rain, say no more.
*S is for Sunshine Avenue which is where we now live. Also for South Island where we are off to next week. Yesterdays front page was a picture (albeit computer generated) of the ferry almost capsizing which is a cheery thought.
*T is for twelve which is the bus that we get to work.. Also Te Papa the multi million $$ museum which is the star attraction of Wellington and currently home to the Lord of the Rings exhibition, yes the hype continues. T is also for the Tasman, the stretch
of water between NZ and Oz which we are soon so cross for the sunny delights of Queensland as well as a few days in Sydney, Perth and Melbourne.
*U is for UK which is where the postcard that Caz sent went after the Auckland postman could not find us. Having no return address they sent it back to the pub where caz works as it was a freebie card from Hawley Arms, madness.
*V is for vegemite, which is the Kiwi national dish.
*W is for Wellington (of course) and also Wanaka which is a town in the South Island where we are off for a holiday in a couple of Waitemata Harbour.
*Honestly can't think of an x 😞
*Y is for yachting, as in what Tom did on Sunday when he cruised across the harbour and did some official photography for the women’s race.
Z is for zoo, you know you have seen the photos. Hot off the press down under is that Jin the Asiatic Otter has escaped from Auckland zoo and is now at large throughout Auckland. It has been front page news for the last week, that’s the
kind of news hungry place NZ is.
