Up at 07:00 again. But we are showered and have breakfast and are away for just after 08:00, which is a record!
With it being Sunday the roads are relatively quite so we make good progress as the roads are relatively quiet. We head down highway 2 through Hastings. We pass through Dannevirke that appears to have a strong Scandinavian influence. We have been going for a couple of hours when we come to a small town called Woodvile where we decided to stop. Elevenses! Slice time! Today it is vanilla slice and Latte. Diane is also starting to join the “Elevenses Club” and has a cream cake.
We push on and see some Hills/Mountains coming up and I think we will be into the steep winding roads again, But no; there is an impressive gorge called Manawatu Gorge that takes us through the range. As we get nearer to Wellington the volume of traffic builds up, but progress is still good and we arrived at the campsite at around 13:00. We check-in, Di made some lunch, and I found out the times of buses into Wellington, and change the ferry booking from Tuesday to Monday so that we can sail
tomorrow.
After we finished lunch we set off to catch the bus into Wellington, it was about a 35 min journey from the campsite. We got off at Chandler Place and walked down to the sea front and stop at a café for a glass of wine. There were a lot of people around, and young people were jumping off the wharf into the sea. We wandered around the sea front and came across a lively pub, It was called St Johns and had lots of people sat outside on the grass enjoying the late afternoon sunshine. We stopped here and had a few glasses of Monteith’s crushed apple cider.
We decided to have dinner in Wellington and wandered around before coming upon a pub called the General Practitioner. We had dinner there and just as we were finishing we realized that a bus back to the campsite was due, we got the bill and rushed outside, only to just see it leaving. The buses were every hour on a Sunday – so we had an hour to kill. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because I had been looking for “the cable car” all day
but couldn’t see any pylons. We came across it and it was a funicular. We took the opportunity of the spare hour to journey up on the funicular, which only took about 6 mins. We were rewarded with a panoramic view of Wellington from the top.
We caught the 19:50 bus back to the campsite that seemed to go all round the houses. We were in bed by about 21:00; Di thought that this was late!!! As we had an early start tomorrow. We are on the 08:25 ferry to Picton on the South Island tomorrow. We have a 07:25 check-in, and the Interisland Car Ferry is about 25 mins from the campsite. So we will need to be up at round 06:00!!
Quite a full day!
