Left Heritage hotel on the 7th Nov - long drive down to Napier - stopped at Taupo to look around - the lake is huge and the weather was good. The road from Taupo to Napier went through some fantastic scenery - even stopped for a photo (attached) to have picture taken near Waipango Falls (may have made this name up as we forgot to write it down so if you google it and it does not exist don't blame us! Napier was a beautiful small city with a distinct art deco feel of the early thirties, stayed at the Nautilus hotel opposite the pacific ocean - good rooms with reasonably priced mini bar that encourages you to partake of the goodies. Ate at the hotel as that was also very reasonable (and other restaurants seemed ... read more

Kia Ora! I have now been in Wellington for just about a week and it has flown by. I am not sure if it is because a new place is always fun and adventurous or because I have now experienced many close encounters with natural disasters. In just the first week I have felt an earthquake, had a Tsunami warning, and a twister warning that actually wrecked the town 20 minutes from here. New Zealand loves its natural disasters! (Mom do not worry I am fine) With all of those things aside this first week has been so much fun and I have yet to have a dull moment or even some downtime, which has been good, otherwise I would probably be super home sick. The beginning of the week was somewhat boring since it was ... read more

Hello Everybody! I hope everyone had a lovely 4th of July and watched many fireworks for me, turns out the only day one can buy fireworks in Wellington/ New Zealand is November 5th... go figure (Cory you would probably love it here on that day). So I have finally made it to the city that I will be spending a majority of my time and I am in LOVE. The city reminds me of Charleston and Boston because it is smaller then Auckland and very low key and relaxed. The university itself is not in the city but it sits over looking the city on top of mountain. I live in between the city and the university which makes walking up from the city rather difficult because it is literally a vertical incline (I should have ... read more

New Zealand....3 weeks in and already been filled with so much-adventure, beauty, long lost relatives, great food, brilliant people, our wee camper Dora and lots more-LOVE love loving it! So the last little need to know from South America that we squeezed in after our last blog was our dinner at La Cabrerra. We hadn't booked so we strolled up hoping we could get a table at around 9 o'clock with hoards of people waiting outside, Tom's thoughts were if there is a queue that must be a good sign so we stuck our name down with an hour wait ahead of us. Tom decided to go and ask could we buy some drinks while we were waiting to which the reply was...'Sorry Sir I'm afraid we only serve complimentary champagne out here'....much to our disappointment ... read more

Packed up the car and headed to Picton today. Stopped in Kaikora for lunch, and again in Blenheim for a coffee en route, and despite some pretty lousy rainy weather, we made good time and were in Picton in time for our ferry back….which was then late by over an hour. The crossing itself was quite choppy, and Helen suffered a bit, especially on the open seas where the waves were pretty big and the boat juddered and shook each time it hit one of big waves! We arrived back into Wellington tired but glad to be back and staying with friends! Headed to the Hutt and back to Andy and Marias where we both crashed out exhausted!... read more

We have been in NZ for 1 week now and what an eventful week it's been. We thought the North Island was supposed to be warm and the south island cool - not the case so far. Highlights so far: Auckland - Interesting city but we wanted to basically leave it. We did the Sky Deck and we found the Oldest serving pub (off course) so we had to have a beer there. Some of the parks around the town were nice to walk through. Waitomo - We stopped at Otorohanga Kiwi House so Darren could see a Kiwi - something he always wanted to see. They are bigger than I thought and they are also Nocturnal - this made taking a photo very difficult - but we tried anyway. We did the glow worm cave ... read more

24 04 2010 Thankfully another lovely day to greet us it was time to leave Blenheim. The journey to Picton was short, only 35 minutes away. Picton itself was a lovely harbour side place. We parked up and went for stroll round the quay side. I was impressed with the landing craft that was used as a local taxi. Shortly after looking at that we saw a 2 foot wide Ray swimming alongside. Really surprised to see how close to the quayside it was. We then killed time whilst waiting fro our ferry to depart. We were booked on the Interislander ferry which Wendy was not looking forward to as she gets a bit queasy on boats. The sun was shining though and the sea looked like a mill pond. We joined the queue and waited ... read more
