With no set plan apart from 4 wheels and another to steer we headed North to pick up the Kiwi Experience tour bus route for a rough guide to where the action was whilst flicking through what many call the bible.. The Lonley Planet Guide but we're not religius people. Our first real stop was a place out in the sticks called Erua where we held up for a few nights to do one of the most popular treks in New Zealand.. The Tongariro Crossing. This is an 8 hour trek across Mordor up to Mt Doom treking across Orc and Evil infested country.. In "Lord of The Rings" that is..!! The region is one of the most prolific volcanic regions in the world and is a world heratige site with three active volcanoes. The 16km walk taking 8 hours took us across active geothermal areas, volcanic crater floors from prvious eruptions as well as emerald blue crater lakes and other serene natural formations.
The backpacker's where we stayed was certainly also unique, with a pig and dog greeting us on arrival with other such various animals such as sheep, goats, and horses roaming around. The hostel had its own
minature paint ball field as well as a secret cinema hidden away with the only entrance being through a wardrope..!! The place was quite a popular spot in the winter also as vocanoe's make for great ski slopes and after talking with the owner a possible offer of work during the winter season arose inevitably giving us some fresh ideas come snow time.
