Woke up with a headache. Bit odd seeing as I only had 2 beers last night! My alarm went off first, it auto went on snooze though obv. Soon enough everyones alarms start beeping so I knew it must be time to get up. Luckily once again I had packed everything I needed the night before so there wasn’t much for me to do. My backpack is way to heavy, I’m deffo gonna have to get rid of some stuff! It’s gonna break my heart but it has to be done! So once ready everyone climbs on the bus to head to a surfer town called Raglan. Some people are severely hungover (especially this awesome ginger dude called Scott who seems to drink more than the average alcoholic). So I sleep most of the start of ... read more

From Paihia, I headed two hours south to a small town called Ruakaka. There isn’t really much there, but a large beautiful bay, 7 or so kite spots and wind. Those items thankfully are really all I need to keep myself busy, so taking the advice of a good friend of Monty and mine from Idaho, Chris Campbell, I connected with Dave and Sue from Ruakaka Kitesports/Dekay Kiteboards. They showed me the ropes for 3 days and 2 nights and following the friendly Kiwi way, kindly gave me a place to crash. I happily got to kite for 3 days in a mix of waves and flat water as well as watch the building of a custom kiteboard from start to finish in 2-days time. The shaping, the hand-painting, the resin and all... it was fascinating. ... read more

Here I am in Raglan, looking at a real estate leaflet with properties for sale in Port Waikato. $284,000 for a "classic beach bach" doesn't sound too bad. Here in Raglan, you would be lucky to get a section for that. The two settlements have a number of things in common. They are both on the West Coast. One has a harbour, the other has the country's biggest river spilling out into the Tasman. Both are close to centres with much bigger populations - Hamilton and Auckland. But that's about where the similarities end. Raglan is reggae vibe and way cool. Port Waikato is Coast Radio and hits from the 60s. It still hasn't discovered the meaning of the word cool. But I like it. Just as the music is from the 60s, so too is ... read more

On October 21, we made our way to the surf town of Raglan. Raglan is popular among surfers especially because the waves tend to come ashore to the left instead of straight ahead. A few of the people on the bus took a surf class. I opted out of this one as well - I wasn’t about to spend $75 on something I knew I wasn’t going to be good at. So those of us who didn’t surf went to the beach anyways to watch the surfers and play some Frisbee. Frisbee didn’t work out so well since it was very windy. And so I decided to take a walk. Along the sand there were a bunch of small purple seashells that I had never seen before and so I had collected a few to bring ... read more

My loyal fans! Im sorry its been so long! I had a feeling that would happen... Wow so what a month its been! Raglan is like Hotel California: "Last thing I remember, I was Running for the door I had to find the passage back To the place I was before "relax" said the night man, We are programmed to receive. You can checkout any time you like, But you can never leave!" But finally I am breaking away- my friend Liz and I are making our way North- to where the sun is shining and its warm (no one bothered to let me in that the spring here is wet and cold- yesterday the sun broke through for the first time in weeks, seriously!) At the moment we are staying with a sweet family, spending ... read more

We woke up to a really really really rainy day and when it rains here in Raglan, there really is NOTHING to do. Everything is based around outdoor activities. So, we played some fooseball, watched a movie, played some tile rummy. The stray bus came in that afternoon so our small group of like 8 people at the hostel went to like 48 people. A really bis bus had come in quite full of people. So, we made dinner quickly before all 46 other people wanted to make theirs. It was still raining after dinner so we played some more tile rummy before bed. Not a very exciting day but on a good note I didn't spend any money today ... read more

Made some breakfast and was disappointed to see some clouds and rain. We had planned to go down to the beach. We ended up walking down to Manu bay to watch some of the surfers with a couple of other people. The van from the hostel then came and picked us up to take us into town. We sat a cafe and ate some cake and had a coffee before getting a few things for our dinner. The sun came back out so we got back to the hostel and sat in the hammocks again for a bit. There is a viewpoint they have here to walk to they call Inspiration point. You can see the ocean and a good view of the sunset so we walked there to see it but the clouds came back ... read more

Meike and I slept in for a bit this morning before heading down to make some breakfast. Sent an email home to everyone to let them know i’m alive since internet has been scarce and expensive. We decided to go on the bush walk that they have behind the hostel. But first we stopped at the flying fox they have set up here. A flying fox is just a zip line.Oh ya, to do the bush walk you have to get a map and put your names down on the chalk board incase you don’t come back they know to go look for you haha. Well the hike is really in the bushes, a very narrow trail and it’s super steep! Took us 3 hours to complete but it was cool walking through the forest. Made ... read more

Up early again and back on the bus. We stopped in Hamilton (where I went to the rugby game) to drop a couple of people off and to get some groceries. On our way to Raglan we stopped at the 55 meter waterfall called Bridal Veil falls. Really nice falls. A girl I met on the bus named Meike (pronounced My - kay) and I decided that we were going to stay in Raglan for a few nights so we got a room to ourselves. Raglan is like a little surfing town with some really amazing waves. Our hostel was like a lodge in the middle of the forest. Our room had a view of the ocean. A few of drove back into town with the bus to look around and grab a few groceries. We ... read more

Im breaking boundaries, expanding my mind and growing muscles! I decided to make a small and definitely incomplete list of the new experiences I've had here during my first month down under the Down under. So here in no particular order, things I have never done before and experienced for the first time in New Zealand: Made Dulce de' leche (I think its the next easiest thing after boiling water) Made Pizza in an outdoor hand built oven using wood I cut, dough I made and some veggies I picked! Drove a Car on the left side, legally Used a hot water bottle at night (I think I would cry without it) Used a wood sander (I sucked at it) Ate white bread with butter and chocolate sprinkles (apparently this is a staple treat for kids ... read more
