We were heading north! First to Waipoua forest, where the gigantic Kauri trees grow, and then on to the Hippy Hut, an Airbnb place we had booked because it looked fun and quirky. But first we had to stop and buy a cooler on the way. A quick search before we left showed a place called “The Warehouse” just up the road, and we made a quick stop. As Ollie often gets great ideas about all the things we can’t live without whenever we go anywhere, we made it clear before going into the shop that we were only getting a cooler. An hour later we were standing outside the shop with everything but a cooler. There was SO much stuff in there that seemed perfect for a three month trip in New Zealand. Three boogie ... read more

Arriving in the Hokianga feels like coming home - even though I haven't lived here for 40 years and I wasn't born here. But I did have some of my schooling here and there have been family ties with the region since I was ten. So as I pedaled my way to the top of the last, steep hill before Omapere, it wasn't just the exertion that had me gasping for air. There was also a gasp of recognition, of acknowledgment, that even after all these years the Hokianga still feels like home. The late afternoon sun was bouncing off the sand dunes on the northern side of the harbour, and to my right the Hokianga stretched and twisted its way inland in the direction of my special part of it. As I gazed, I was ... read more

This morning we woke to a beautiful sunrise over Hokianga Harbour. We had a quiet breakfast headed off to catch the 10am car ferry across the harbour. We visited the beautiful Hokianga Harbour and took some lovely pictures of where the harbour flows out to the sea. We then drove to the Kauri Forest and took a picture of the largest Kauri tree. I had to take a little video of it to get it all in as it was so enormous. From there we travelled to Kai Iwi Lakes, which are a series of three lakes, which contrast from the bluest blue to a deep green. Steve and I had a picnic lunch here, it was lovely. We then drove on down the West Coast to a town called Dargaville. We visited the Museum there. ... read more

Day 103: Forest Giants and Harbour Retreats I'm not sure what it is about Auckland, but as had been the case when I first arrived here seven weeks ago and stayed at a different YHA, I was again sharing a small dorm with a group of Germans girls, and again they decided to get up ridiculously early to pack very slowly. Rather annoyed, I gave up hope of sleeping at seven and went out for breakfast leaving them to it. Again, I've nothing particular against Germans in general, just one's that I have to share dorms with in Auckland. My mood wasn't helped by the fact that I was soon to be picking up a car and driving on my own in unknown territory in a country where I had no idea what the national speed ... read more

Hi folks, I know pictures have been promised and we are working on it. Thecomputer we currently have access to is cleverly set up to only allow web browsing. This means I cannot upload our pictures from a CD. My apologies as I know you are all waiting with bated breath. I have not yet read Abby's last entry but I thought you might like to know that yesterday we went to see The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and it was really fantastic. I will be seeking out the books so that I can re-read them. Sorry if that was duplicate information. Today Abby and I went to Puketi Forest where we hiked to a grove of Giant Kauri tree. These trees are really impressive even (I should say especially) compared to Redwoods and ... read more
