When we arrived at Camp last night, we were delighted when the receptionist said that New Plymouth had been blessed with great weather over the last two months....well guess what, as per, we woke to grey skies, closely followed by the heavens opening and unleashing one heavy bout of wind and rain. You know in Edinburgh, during the festival when you all feel sorry for the tourists that visit and have to sit through the tattoo with poncho's on - well thats us today.......big thank you to Frances and Family for our early Christmas pressie of pac a macs, much used, and much appreciated. Our slight glowing tan, is fading back to scottish pastieness again, anyway enough of the moaning, New Zealand is beautiful, and the reason it is so luscious is because of all the ... read more

I was woken by the sound of the ducks quacking their way around the campsite trying to cadge breakfast off anyone. Ignoring them, I slept for a further hour and then, peering out of the curtains, noticed that the goat had been moved. Unfortunately, it seemed I was going to have to make alternative arrangements for breakfast. It was a little overcast so I resorted to breakfast thoroughly indoors. However, it wasn’t raining but, having washed up all the dishes and venturing outside to pack the cables away, it was clearly time to put a jumper on! The next problem was working out how to get back onto my route north, as the campsite was some 9km east of the city. A quick study of the map indicated a solution via a housing estate. So, memorising ... read more

Well, I guess this is it. We've actually made it home in one piece! The doc says I'll live, too. My shoulder should come right within a year if I can stay off a bike. So we bought a couple cheap cars (inlcuding an old MG convertible to help us get over the loss we still feel intensely). We've now got a phone and are back on the internet too (as of today, hence the long delay after our last blog entry), For those who are wondering, our email address is still: wellsnz@xtra.co.nz and our phone is back the same as it was: (64 6) 758 9589 It has been really great seeing Tao, Ian and Hyunah again. They came up to help us unpack the thousands of boxes that were scattered among friends, in storage ... read more

Waking up in the van today started like any other-I arose first-desperate for the loo and Anna and Pea squeaked and snuffled for another half an hour inside their sleeping bags. We had dumped the van in the middle of the night after a very stressful drive practically outside someones house, and awoke to find the occupier doing a spot of gardening as I rolled up the blinds to welcome some sun into the van!!! We had taken a wrong turning somewhere the night before and ended up on a 'state-highway'-I don't think so!It was a road from hell-all bumpy and deserted with lots of loose stones.Anna scared herself into thinking a naked psycho with a balaclaver covered in blood, wielding a chainsaw was going to burst into the road and kill us all.Calm, as ever (and ... read more

On Sunday...with 3 of us with very very sore muscles, we left Waitomo. We were all limping and hobbling along. Moaning and groaning about our aches and pains. For once, Dennis was in the best shape of all of us. We drove south towards New Plymouth. It was a beautiful, scenic drive...although like most roads in NZ very windy. We were following Mom and Gary in their van. We made a few stops along the way for beach walks, photos and most importantly beer. We came across New Zealand's "Smallest Organic Brewery" We got to sample different all-natural beers and ales. We purchased a 2 Litre bottle of the lager to save for dinner that night. It was the first time any of us had ever purchased beer in a plastic pop-bottle type bottle. Later in ... read more

Thu 28th Dec The Tongariro crossing trip was cancelled today cos of the weather so decided to squeeze in a quick trip to the west coast of NI. Drove to New Plymouth which took about 5 hours taking in the ridiculous SH43 Lost World Highway. You never know where some of these roads are going! Had a wander round New Plymouth, then took a walk around Pukekura Park at night where they're quite pleased about some lights they've put up in the park. Should have stayed in! Fri 29th Dec Took the western coastal route on the Surf Highway around to the southern access point to Mount Egmont. Did the Kapuni Loop Track to Dawson's Falls. Carried on round the coast, stopping for lunch in Hawera before continuing down to Wanganui. Took a look round there, ... read more

22/10/06 Sunday - New Plymouth to Pukeiti Garden *** Note there are three pages of photos. You must select each page to view all photos. New Plymouth was wet and very dead Sunday morning. I turned in my hostel key, jumped in the car and headed out towards Pukeiti Garden. Pukeiti was a last minute destination suggested by Stephanie. Stephanie has enjoyed the photos from Grandpa and Grandma Hazen and Teresia and John’s gardens, and she knows grandma Hazen has a lot of rhododendrons. The Pukeiti garden is an internationally know rhododendron and azalea garden that Stephanie thought I would enjoy. The month of October is high blooming season for the hybrid rhododendrons and evergreen azaleas. Thanks Stephanie!!! The road to the garden went from one lane of travel in each direction to a narrow back ... read more

I know its been a while since my last entry but I haven't had any good adventures lately. No good stories and to quote Yvon Chouinard (Patagonia Founder) "Adventure doesn't start until something goes wrong". By that definition, my adventure has definitely started but lately its been a little lackluster. The day after I got back to Taranaki, Barney and I had a good surf at Kumera Patch. After Barney got back from work that night, we drove down to Wellington for the weekend. Barney's girlfriend's birthday was on Saturday. After being in the middle of nowhere for the past week (Northland), I was ready to go to the city for a bit of partying. For Ari's birthday we went out to a Greek restaurant and then went back to her flat for a party. The ... read more

Good old, Queen - whatever you think of her and her family, she does get us a day off every year. We took advantage of this year's Queen's Birthday public holiday to go away to Taranaki for the weekend. The 'naki is the peninsula sticking out of the west coast of the Central North Island and is about 6 hours drive from Wellington. We didn't fancy doing the whole drive in one evening so we stopped overnight at Wanganui which is about two thirds of the way there and headed onto our final destination New Plymouth the next morning. The next day was pretty clear and meant we got some good views of the sight that dominates the whole region - Mount Egmont or Mount Taranaki depending on your politics. I prefer to use the original ... read more

**Look For Pictures Here in a Couple of Days - this computer won't let me upload them***** Today is ANZAC day, the day during which New Zealanders remember their war veterans. I had picked up a poppy, different from those that we wear in Canada (made of a crepe sort of material) and was wearing it. The Greenhouse backpackers was super, and we slept well. Its a converted school house, and was very cozy. I especially liked the cat. He was originally named "Nuts", but his owner had him nuetered and now he is named, you guessed it - "Nonuts"!! Leaving Dargaville around 730 am, we drove south and then turned east at Ruawai. We pulled into Matakohe (population 400) at around 8am and had a lovely hot breakfast of eggs, bacon and tea (coffee for ... read more
