16 October 2016 Today it was a "park day". We spent most of our day at Hamilton's Gardens, really very nice park with a variety of sub-parks with themes from all kind of origens: chinese, japanese, english tudor, italian renaissance, from india, maori (of course), etc. All very well done. A visit worthwhile. We were fortunate that the park featured a model train show. Older man and women showing of their model trains and scenaries built around it reminded us of a brother in law. A scene in the park particularly draw our attention: Kiwis are nature lovers and tree huggers, but the dressing of trees in our opinion takes things a bit too far (see foto). Further little else to report, maybe with the exception of a quote out of the story, that we found on ... read more

16 October 2016 Again a day without green light from the Aussies. We have decided to make our way back to Auckland and did something that I would have thought to be impossible in my lifetime. We visited Hobbiton, yes the place where the outdoor parts of "The Hobbit", "Lord of the rings",etc. were filmed. I have never seen a Hobbit movie, nor have I read the Tolkien books, but what we saw today definitely encouraged us to see at least one movie, Margarita did read "The Hobbit", many years ago,to help Alex in school, with a bookreport. The level of detail is incredible and the overall scenary really something special. I thought that people who generally visited these sites must be "aficionados" and probably nerds. Nevertheless seeing the visitors from all over the world, I am ... read more

Years ago, I started a charm bracelet for myself and one for my granddaughter. Why did I buy sterling silver charms for them while travelling? They made great souvenirs, looked great, were easy and cheap to buy and took up no room at all in my suitcase. Sadly, those types of charms are not as easy to find (or as cheap) as they used to be. It is a shame as we also used to buy them as gifts for friends and relatives overseas or visitors to our country. They loved receiving something unique to New Zealand. So, time to see what other options are available. I admit that I had been gazing longingly at Pandora bracelets for a long time but had resisted the temptation to indulge. But okay, I have succumbed and am now ... read more

For anyone interested in trains, railways and their history in Hamilton, there is quite a bit on offer. While you are exploring, you will be visiting plenty of places that will keep the adults happy, the kids interested and the dog exercised too. As I started writing this, I received a text from my daughter who works in the CBD, telling me that part of the old railway building that was being demolished collapsed all by itself. http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/81492548/building-partially-collapses-in-hamilton . This link will give you more information about the building and its history http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/80853629/tainui-group-holdings-invests-in-hamilton-cbd For history buf... read more

Hamilton Gardens receive thousands of visitors every year, from all over the world. But I wonder how many visit the Victorian Flower Gardens which are housed just along the road from where you turn into the Gardens. I suspect many people don't realise they are there or don't know where to park to get to them or simply see them as they drive past and it is too late then to stop. As a Hamiltonian, I have been very disappointed to go to the VFG several times, only to find them locked and no sign telling me when they would be open. But today I managed to leave my assistant in the car, after a long walk, and grabbed some photos. I will let the photos speak for themselves - they will give you an idea ... read more

Before brekkie it was Ninja Warrior time and Hat was quite insistent that I did all the proper introductions like they do on the TV series: What's your occupation? Who's here supporting you today? Have you done lots of training this year? Ed was first off on the course and I did my best to commentate as each completed the course: 'he's on'the wheel of fate', 'she's looking very steady on the twelve rings of fear' and 'look at him make light work of the I ron sliders'. They loved it and were all in. I was even asked to make the right noises if they touched the ground and got a time penalty and, of course, the big fanfare when they touched the button at the end of the course. The level of determination was ... read more

Did another three hours driving north today and passed through Hamilton. To stretch our legs we went to the park gardens which has won international awards. It was excellent, a host of interconnected gardens from different periods and countries. Ed and Hat took turns choosing which door to go through next. Ed, favourites were the Tropical and the Chinese gardens. Cas the Japanese and Italian. Hat the Japanese and Backyard. And mine was the Chinese and Italian. We grabbed a bite to eat and did the final 20 mins to our destinations which was a in Ngaruawhia Memorial Park. There were red poppy flags all over as they remember ANZAC day on the 26th April. It was on the banks of the river and the park had an excellent obstacle course which the kids played merrily ... read more
