Me again, you cannot beat free internet access in McDonalds. We headed towards Waihi Beach via Paeroa (mining place), stopped in Te Aroha which is very strange little town. It reminded me of cowboy films. They have got Got to the beach at about 6pm. It was too windy and too cold for me to go and try the water however the beach was full of locals, surfing, fishing, playing rugby, cycling and strolling on the beach. We managed to photograph an amazing sunset. I "survived" the first night in the campervan which was surprisingly very comfortable! It might be quite hard for some people to adjust to this way of life. We headed towards Mauao which is photographed everywhere in brochures and calendars. It was raining pretty much the whole day but guess what...we went ... read more

Every bit as wet today as it was sunny yesterday - thought we were back in Scotland. Set off from Paihia to the Kauri Coast to visit Waipoua Forest and stopped off to seet Tane Mahuta, the largest surviving Kauri tree, followed by a visit to the 4 Sisters and Te Matua Ngahere,a ree estimated to be 2000+ years old, with a girth of 13.8 metres (slightly larger than Rae's) -the photo doesn't do it justice! We got absolutely soaked - it was a true RAIN forest! Stopped off in Dargaville for (almost) the worst cup of coffee I've had in my life. Then proceeded to Whangamata, arriving a lot later than planned due to (my) underestimating the drive and a traffic jam on the "One". We have a hot tub on the balcony - pity it's still throwing it ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Coromandel Peninsula » Pauanui December 21st 2011

Pauanui isn't far from Tairua by boat, but we decided to take the long way round by car. We checked out the massive baches (ie holiday houses) on the waterways, did some shopping and grabbed lunch before heading back to Tairua. With the tide coming in, it was the perfect time to do some kayaking before having another chilled out evening at our backpacker's, including dinner in the "treehouse". Later on, Dean went pipi hunting... I'm still not convinced these pipis actually exist!... read more

After our stay in Whangamata, we decided to do a little road trip of our own and headed to Tairua on the Coromandel. After checking into our awesome little backpacker place, we went for a lovely beach walk, climbed up Mount Puka and visited North Beach before enjoying a chilled out evening.... read more

20thNovember 2011 We saved the best until last! A beautiful sunny morning and by 10.00 we were at Whakarewarewa Thermal Village (thats the short name!!) The long name is Tewhakarewarewatangaoteopetauaawahiao which means – All the people that live in this village are direct descendents of Chief Wahiao! Took the guided tour of the village where it was explained that this was still a village where Maori people live and they do their cooking in the hot pools, bathe in the hot water, and the culture of the Maori people. We then had a half hour show of dancing, singing and the hakka before we were then allowed to wander freely in the village, exploring the streets and the churches with its graveyard of the chiefs and guides. We did the hours nature walk which gave you ... read more

This is a stationary travel blog to let everyone on both sides of the Tasman know what we’ve been up to since we came back from Oz at the end of last year, but mostly it’s to show off wedding photos from Torin’s marriage to Andrea here in Matarangi. The blog was a monthly addiction for two and half years while we were in Oz. Now settled back in the Shaky Isles I’m amazed that half a year has gone so quickly while busy doing amazingly little. After visiting family & friends and checking they’d been behaving themselves while we were away, we found it disconcertingly easy to find work in the tiny (around 250 permanent residents) beach settlement of Matarangi. The golf club desperately needed cleaners over the Christmas holidays. Only when we turned up ... read more

The kids were dragging a bit this morning. Unless the car rides count, we really hadn't given them much down time. But this was our last day on the Coromandel Peninsula and we hadn't headed up north beyond Whitianga. So we finally rallied the troops by around 9:30 and started driving north with no destination in particular. It seemed a few degrees colder in the morning than it had been the past few days, so we dressed slightly warmer. We still packed rain gear, swim suits and even some extra clothes. We had a vague plan to hopefully make it to New Chums Beach, a beach described in one travel books as "one of the top 10 beaches in the world". We couldn't get an exact description as to how to get there. We knew it ... read more

Our departure day from the Northern Region greeted us with the first clear, sunny sky during our stay at the house called Zemmery Fidd. We headed down to town to get a couple of postcards and log onto the internet connection from the local hotspot. Neither Zemmery Fidd nor our next house at the Hot Water Beach is equipped with an internet connection, so we have had trouble getting email and posting to our blog. The drive ahead started with the car ferry and then we were looking at a solid 5 1/2 hour drive to the Coromandel Peninsula. The Northern Region is the peninsula to the northwest of Auckland. We were travelling back through Auckland to the Northeast side of the North Island. Great driving weather. On either side of Auckland we got to some ... read more

Tapu Creek campsite. While cooking my breakfast I met Pam, the mother of the owner. She gave good advice about work. Recommends getting down to Christchurch. Drove to Coromandel. Lots of beautiful beaches en-route. More beach-combing, great hobby. Evening before arrived in Coromandel Town. Big pub-grub burger and a pint. First pint in a while since driving about. Campsite pretty good.... read more

After leaving Whangamata we went to Opoutere beach for a walk. It is alongside an estuary and nature reserve but the beach itself was rather windswept. We were planning on walking along the beach and then back by the estuary but the tide was too high and we couldn’t get across the inlet to walk by the estuary. We got back to the van and headed towards Cooks beach. This is close to Hot water beach and the cathedral cove walkway which we wanted to but we first headed down to Maramaratotara bay. It was surprisingly rough and whilst sitting on the beach watching the waves, we nearly got drenched by a rogue wave. Mark managed to get out the way but I dropped my sandal on the floor and had to try and get ... read more
