30 04 2010 Wendy was awake early and took some photos of the lovely sunrise. Today we were going from Waihi beach up north and around the Coromandel peninsula. Even though this was our last full day of travelling NZ didn’t fail us. The views were stunning. We went from deserted beaches where we stopped for breakfast to steep jungle hills. The roads weaved up and round steep turns to reveal fantastic views across the peninsula at the top. Often the views were over 360 degrees and no amount of camera work could do it justice. Highly recommended for visitors to NZ to check this area out. We didn’t have enough time but what we saw was beautiful. Got to Coromondel and spent an hour de bugging the camper van prior to handing it back tomorrow. ... read more

Hi everyone just a quick update on what we have been up to, we have mainly been in coastal areas mainly on the east side of the North Island, the beaches and bays here are so stunningly beautiful and quite desolate at this time of year we spent a lot of time in the Coromandel Region, mainly because is is not very populated, unlike some parts of the North Island we planned this as Julie was due to go home but her flight was cancelled due to certain circumstances as you know???? We are now in The Bay Of Islands region which is 150 undeveloped island out in the sea a very beautiful peaceful place.we went to the bay where Captain Cook anchored in 1769 he must of been gobsmacked,We had a problem with our campervan and ... read more

Probably one of our best days so far in New Zealand started gloomily - the clouds were so low that you felt that you could touch them and they hung so low on the opposite promontory sweeping towards the sea ... uh oh I said to John, that’s coming our way ... and sure enough we had on/off showers of rain to start (it cleared up beautifully and we ended up sweltering ... you just can’t tell here!!) So we drove round the coast road, which showed us some stunning views - we’ve moved on from ‘wow’ to ‘awesome’ and ‘stunningly pretty’ as we go round the corners! And after a short while we arrived at the old gold town of Coromandel ... well, we almost arrived at it - as we drove in John (bless ... read more

Last night we camped by a huge rock, and John was out quite early taking photos. Unfortunately the day has been sun and showers - everyone seems quite happy that they’re getting rain at last - it’s been 5 months since they had any decent rainfall and they’re using ‘tank water’. We just wish it’d hold off for a few more weeks...!! Last night John had tucked his wallet away safely, so when we stopped for petrol and while he was turning the van upside down looking for it, I toddled in to pay ... Amongst the Sunday papers and popular magazines I noticed one called ‘More-Pork’, with a wonderful cover picture of a chap with a huge shaggy black pig - the cover story was ‘Getting an Old Fella Keen’ and the Product Review was ... read more

Hi everyone its been a while since we have been in touch but we are in a very remote area now and it is more difficult to find Internet. We left the South Island and crossed from Picton to Wellington on the car ferry, we have driven right up the middle of the North Island, passing through Tongariro National Park this is a very barren mountainous region. This is where Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings is, all the mountains here are active volcanoes. It is surrounded by lakes, it is quite high up here and during the winter this becomes a busy skiing area. We continued on through the lake Taupo Region and Orakei Korako a thermal area with lots of active geezers, mud pools, hot springs one of only two geothermally situated caves ... read more

We were quite relieved to leave stinky Rotorua after our second day. And at times we still think that we can smell the sulphur!! Our windy roads continued and we snaked our way up the east coast until Whitianga, where we stopped at Hot Water Beach - where (at low tide) hot spring water oozes to the surface and you can have your own personal ‘spa’ bath. It was unfortunately the start of high tide (low tide was about 7pm - the reason why it can only be done at low tide is so that you can access the part of the beach where the hot springs are and dig a deep enough hole to reach the hot water). The sea was a beautiful light turquoise colour and looked very inviting however, the surf was quite ... read more

My luggage finally was delivered and I had my true test driving on the left hand side of the road with our drive to Pauanui on the Coromandel Peninsula. At about half way point the road took us into the mountains, narrow very windy, up and down with many turns and no shoulders plus a steady stream of traffic coming the other way. We are staying at the Grand Mecure Puka Park resort in a chalet within the forest. Upon our arrival we setoff for a walk to and along the beach, a long sandy beach with breaking surf and mountain islands out to sea. Our walk back took a little longer since our resort is on the side of the mountain and the climb up was a little breath-taking. On the 20th we ventured forth ... read more

On day 6, I returned to an area south of the peninsular where the roads are straighter and the crowds less obvious. After filling up at a petrol station in the village of Bombay (honest), I turned off the main A1 road at the very humble village of Ohinewal , and headed past the Hapuakohe Mountains towards the town of Paeroa. Now, I have to tell you that New Zealanders are proud of their production of the internationally famous L&P soft drink. You know the one that tastes of Lemon and Paeroa? A few days back, I had seen this drink in a corner store and asked the cashier what Paeroa was. She asked a colleague, who informed me that it was a sort of kiwi fruit. Of course, I bought the drink, and am now ... read more

After Auckland, I headed to the Coromandel Peninsula. I had hoped to visit this area on my last trip to NZ in 2005 but simply ran out of time. The same now applies to Rotorua - I had hoped to get there but it just didn't pan out. Luckily, it is only a 3 hour flight for me to NZ so I will go there again sometime in the next few years. Thames Best described as the little town the 21st century forgot! Such lovely old buildings, great cafes and a relaxed atmosphere. I stay at the Sunkist Backpackers and enjoyed my two days there - the first, wandering around town and then going to the movies to see "Under the Mountain", a NZ movie filmed in Auckland and focusing on Rangitoto Island. The plot was ... read more
