Well, its that time of year, holiday time that is. A time to spend with friends and family, which is always difficult for the lone traveller as the family is back at home which the holiday season painfuly reminds them of. Fortunetly I have the friends. I had decided early on to come back to Tauranga for Christmas as some of my good friends, Pauliene, Jen, Jenna, Maria, Karen, Emily and last but certainly not least Toby wouldbe there. I was nothing like Christmas at home, but after we stopped trying to make it like what we were missing we had a very nice Christmas indeed. On Christmas Eve we drank vine and ate a stew that I made with dumplings (did you know that shortening over here is made from lard, the dumplings were kind ... read more

Christmas with the Fairhursts Having changed our plans to go to Fiji we jumped at the chance to spend Christmas with friends living in Tauranga in the bay of plenty. Mark, Julie, Charlotte and Olivia (and not to forget Milly the dog) were the perfect hosts, even giving up their bedroom for us as their current extension project was not finished in time. Tauranga is a lovely seaside location with Mt Manganui giving fine views of the surrounding countryside. We spent the few days before Christmas shopping and resting with a quick trip up the Coromandel penisula to visit the hot water beach for a spot of warm water (make that bloody hot water) bathing. It was nice to have a Christmas with kids around as it always seems to add to the excitement. Christmas eve ... read more

Ahhh Tauranga, one of those little places in the world that you just seem unable to leave, regardless of lack of work or any other entertainment. I have been caught in this small seaside town for about five weeks now, I really have no idea how it happened. Personaly I blame Tauranga Central Backpackers which is far too accomidating. Saying nothing of all the people who stay here, I have found that in New Zealand all us forigners seem to stay together. I think it the people that have really kept me here, Devali night (Indian Christmas, sorry about the spelling) where a bottle of sparkling wine and curry connected with some white porcline. My Irish roomate Pauline whose sleep I inturupted on my first day at 11, but quickly caught up by the second week. ... read more

We travelled from Ohope near Opotiki in the Bay of Plenty, to Te Puke which is a half hour from my cousin's daughter and her family in Tauranga. The wwoof hosts were a bit older than us, and had been living on their plot of land for about 17 years. They have a large flower garden outside their house which is perched on a flat area surrounded by hills sloping down away from them. They have about a hundred sheep and 32 head of cattle (calves), chooks and ducks. We discovered that there were not that many organic practices that were used on this farm. The plant material that I cut and pulled from the flower garden was put in a bin, driven away by tractor and burned in a distant paddock! The kitchen compost pile ... read more

Hi, I feel like I am back at school on my first day. I am here in beautiful New Zealand and am currently staying with some friends up in the by of plenty about to have a BBQ. I've walked around mount mauganui (spelt wrong I am sure!). That was beautiful (as is much that you do and see here!). I am heading back to Rotorua tomorrow to catch the bus onto Taupo where if I can muster up the courage I will throw myself out of a plane at 12000 ft because that is what you do in NZ it seems! I watched a local rugby game yesterday which was so much better than back home (in England). I went to a local maori cultural night on thu. night where i learnt the pois dance ... read more
