Papamoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park Sept 22, 2007 Just South of Tauranga and Mt. Maunganui is Papamoa Beach which is somewhat famous for Blow Carts which are Go-Karts with sails. They were invented here, of course. The World Blow Cart championships are usually here. More on this later. Inland from Papamoa Beach toward Te Puke is the Papamoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park. To my knowledge this is a Pa (a hilly Maori defense position). It is a fairly steep hill that has a good view of the Papamoa coast line and the surrounding farm land. The park is shared with lots of grazing sheep. Once we reached the top, we found ourselves in a low lying cloud with misty rain. Not unusual this time of year. The sheep pretty well checkered the ground with ... read more

First Week of School September 11 - 14, 2007 Ah, the day arrived with little fan fair and no parade. The uniforms were freshly pressed The children were neatly dressed. Dad with a camera adds a little stress, But the show must go on. I got two chances to take a photograph so they are not up to my usual high standards. (Sarah - Okay, here is my poem: It’s too early to get up. My room is too cold. My Chi straightener won’t work. I hate this uniform. My wool sweater itches. I’m not going to eat in front of people. I want to go home. Mark was off so we came home and prayed all day that Grace would meet the nicest girl in NZ and beg us to let her go hang out ... read more

First Week of Work: I don’t think anyone will be surprised that work is work. Many of the same rules apply in the Southern Hemisphere as in the Northern. You have to show up. You must fulfill your job description to get paid. Alas, it is not Nirvana. However, there are some differences. It is OK to break for tea. Thus far, surgeons are extremely polite. It is busy, but it is not service on demand. Emergencies are defined differently than in the states and have more to do with medical necessity than legal necessity. Although, not completely absent, there seems to be less CYA. This is a training program. Training radiologists are known as registrars (residents in the states). We have two registrars, a first year and a third year. Their training is five years ... read more

Father’s Day week end was a good one. We traveled to Rotorua, which is approximately a one hour drive south. (Sarah - I drove and it was quite frightening. Almost hit a guy on a bike so got yelled at by Ben. I tend to lean to the left so I run off the road a bit. But c’mon…one lane bridges? Give me a break!) Once there we went to Whakarewarewa Forest. Remember “Wh” is pronounced “f”. No, I am not making this up. This forest is home to some of the best mountain biking trails in the world. They are graded in level of difficulty similar to ski slopes. Grade 2 trails are marked green on the map. Grade 3 trails are red, grade 4 are blue, and grade 5 are black. All of ... read more

I am at the local library because we do not have internet yet. Our experience over the last week has been better than expected. The house is good. The neighborhood is good. The school looks good (though we have not gone yet - a little more vaca...). The hospital is old but efficient and Mark thinks the guys are all very nice. We have been busy setting up our house, buying stuff we forgot or couldn't fit into our bags. It is very expensive here and I am wishing I had brought somethings and left others. The town of Tauranga is really neat, right on the water and has lots of places to eat and shop. The kids have spent the better part of the weekend at Starbucks, getting their internet and Facebook fix. Mark and ... read more

Hooray, Hooray, We're on our Way, our OE Holiday Starts Today!! We left Katikati early afternoon after settling in our house/farm sitters Tony & Kathy Farr, and coping with the drama of the new building requiring staining B4 we left!! We managed to catch up with our lovely neighbours Sheryl & Keith Kerr at the Cafe Bahn on the Bombay Hills - they had arrived back from Australia this afternoon, and so good to have a coffee with them and Barry could pass on his worries to Keith, to make sure his cattle were taken care of while we're away! Just had gorgeous cuddles with newest granddaughter Molly Jess, and about to have dinner with Ross & Jo before we head to the airport. Even having our first drink (of many I'm sure) to celebrate the ... read more

4 days to go until we take off for true parts unknown. It has been a test, but I think we have passed. We will see when we get to LAX with 8 bags and 4 bikes. It has been refreshing to clean out and get rid of stuff. We all wonder what we will do with all the things that are boxed up in our garage for the year. I can't imagine wanting to unpack it all. It is our hope that we learn to do without so much stuff - to live a more frugile lifestyle - to enjoy the little things more. We'll see....... read more

I did it! I drove without an accident! Get more to that in a minute. Mark and I woke up this morning and had an American breakfast. Every time we get coffee, they always put steamed milk in it. It always has to be something fancy. All I want is just coffee and milk, not steamed, shaken, or anything else they want to do to it. I was walking down the street thinking about how much I want a regular coffee and then I saw it…..Dunkin Donuts. So Mark and I had a nice original coffee and went next door to the McDonalds for a breakfast sandwich. I feel bad for the New Zealanders. They are missing out on something great; the biscuit. They only have the Mcmuffin or bagel. I survived after all, I had ... read more

After a breakfast on the sunny terrace we headed south towards Auckland crossing the harbour bridge which was widened by adding what are nicknamed ‘Nippon Clip-Ons’ because they were installed by the Japanese. The traditional coffee and scone was at a small town called Paeroa. The sun was now so hot sat outside the café that I had to drink my coffee quickly and seek shade. The weather was bizarrely variable because at some times during the journey there were heavy downpours. We diverted to a town called Te Aroha for the interesting Ewardian spa. The town is at the base of an impressive Mount Te Aroha. The spa rooms are all private and we hired one for a half hour. The hot tub is filled with the hot soda water that wells up naturally. ... read more
