With Daylight Savings Time officially over as of 3am/2am this morning we are once more 10 hours ahead of SA. The day dawned hot and humid, the perfect weather to work up a sweat and get rid of the laziness. We had a hard jog and by the time we got back home we were pouring with sweat. After a shower we spent some time working on Birdsy's seats before doing some more sanding. A light rain started falling and before we knew it, what appeared to be all of the north shore, both young and old, were revving their engines and spinning their tires at every opportunity. We even saw a truck filled with building supplies playing the skidding game. It made for a very noisy few hours.
When we'd done all we could do we watched movies for the rest of the day. We got the news that one of our photos won a category in the Karamea photography competition run by the local Arts Council. We were very pleased as we've never won anything before, especially not a photography competition. Now we await our $50 prize cheque that should arrive in the near future.
Today's highlights:
1. Good hard jog.
2. Working on Birdsy.
3. Winning the photography competition.

We cleaned the house before doing some more work on Birdsy. We've been discussing various options for decorating the inside. The idea is to hide some of the more glaring mistakes by painting some patterns and forms over these areas. Finding a design we both like turned out to be much harder than we anticipated. In the end Ferdi just started scribbling with a pencil on the bottom, trying to find something that would look good.
Later we spent some time reading out on the deck before going for a walk to the beach. It was a gorgeous day and we saw proper waves for the first time in Browns Bay. Usually the ocean represents more of a lake, but today the surf was up and there were quite a few people on the beach and the grass.
When we got home Team Smit had return from their trip and were cleaning and packing away the camp gear. We spent some time sanding on the the seats and then spent a lazy evening in front of that horrible
thing known as television.
Today's highlights:
1. Lovely sunny day.
2. Walk down to the beach.

After a hard jog and a shower we tried to paint Birdsy's name on without using a stencil. We thought we'd be able to paint the name by simply painting over the "shadow" left by the temporary name. Unfortunately it proved to be very hard indeed. The paint kept running and the brush just wasn't fine enough. Neither of us could get a satisfactory result, so we decided to use the stencil Ferdi had made a few days ago. This worked much better. While the paint dried we walked down to the shops in search of a few things we needed.
Back home we had lunch and then started working on a star stencil. After kicking around a lot of ideas we'd finally settled on painting small stars all along the inside of Birdsy's middle (messier) seam. After a test we realized that we'd need to get spray-paint, because using normal paint could not give us the result we were after. Ferdi popped down to the Mitre 10 to get a can, but had to ask a clerk
to unlock the cabinet. By law they have to ask if you're over 18 and what you intend to use it for. Apparently the teenagers uses spray-paint to get high. Very strange. And how do you get high without getting paint on you?
Back at home again, with spray-paint in hand, we tentatively sprayed our first set of stars. It looked good. As we got more confident the results also got better. After we'd done both seams of the middle compartment our stencil had had it. While Talita and Mel started with dinner Ferdi did a bit more work on the seats before making two more star stencils.
Today's highlights:
1. The first paint and lots of progress on Birdsy.
