Fishing
Me and my rod Two weeks have slipped by since I last did a blog - sorry folks! Lets hope I can remember what's been happening?! The weather here is gradually becoming more autumnal with more rainy days than sunny ones, but I've still been able to go to the beach and do everything I want to. When I arrived in Auckland I compiled a list of around 12 activities that I wanted to do, and I'm happy to say that it's now completed. I went and did the sky tower last week which is one of the most prominent features of Aucklands' skyline. I think I've been spoilt in the past with visits to various other tall buildings in America, Canada etc. so though fairly impressive, I didn't think it was anything too special. I resisted doing the free-fall or skywalk from the tower in the hope that better and cheaper oppertunities will come along soon!
Last week Tracey was poorly, so I had a day of looking after the girls by myself which was interesting! I taught myself how to change a nappy which I'd always avoided in the past. Goose was in full flow that day, so I'm now a pro
Syk Tower
A view from sky tower at changing nappies! We went for a barbeque at the school where Fiona works that evening. It was meant to be a pool party but due to the weather turned into an indoor gathering! It was nice to put names to faces, but rather disconcerting finding out what Fiona had been telling them (luckily most of it was positive)! The weekend before last was rather busy on a social scale for me. It involved a couple of late nights followed by days of watching Bridget Jones to help me recover. Fiona and Adam found it rather funny, but I like to remind them that Alex is going to be like this, but far worse!
I went for dinner with the family of one of mums' cousins, Toby, on the Monday in Devonport. It was really nice to meet them and I thoroughly enjoyed a seafood supper which involved my first experience of oysters - yum! Toby Works for an advertising company called DDB which I got to have a look at whilst I waited for him to finish. It was such a nice environment and everyone had a TV in their office, rather cool I thought. I'm looking forward
Competitors
All of the competitors in the water to seeing them again, hopefully this weekend.
Last week end was a rather exciting one; we all went down to Taupo to watch Adam compete in Ironman. I went down with Fiona, the girls, and Fionas' niece, Rachel on the Friday. We stopped off in a little place called Cambridge (!) for a yummy lunch, and arrived late afternoon. Taupo was buzzing with competitors and supporters, it was awesome. We made signs which were going to be put up all around the course. Fiona made the best one (without realising that everyone would read it), saying 'Go Adam, you're not doing another one until we've had another baby', which was pretty amusing (and she'll kill me for putting that on my blog!). I was taken fishing on the lake by Craig (one of Adams friends) with Steve (Nat's hubby), Dan (Steve's boy) and Rachel. Unfortunately no-one caught anything, which was obviously the fault of our lame teachers, but it was still great! It was an early start on Saturday, with the race beginning at 7am. It starts with a swim or somewhere between 3-4km, then 180km on the bike followed by 42km running - mad. We saw Adam start,
Adam
Adam's first transition then his transition to the bike, then at a couple of points during his run, followed by him finishing in 12hours 10 minutes - not a bad time! The weather was grim as the rain poured and the wind was fairly high, so consequently we probably didn't support him as much as we should have, woops! The race ends at midnight, 17hours after the start, and anyone who hasn't finished the race at that point cannot call themselves an ironman. We went back out on the course at around half 10 to support the stragglers and it was so tough, some were being pulled off the course because there was no way that they were going to finish in time, and others were understandably struggling. We were at the finish line for midnight and one lady, who had twisted her ankle at the first transition, was just just 10mins away when her time was up; it was pretty sad. It was Fiona's birthday on the Sunday, which was taken over by driving and still the ironman which was a shame, but we still had a nice brunch for her.
I was poorly on Sunday night and Monday, suffering with
Adam running
Bit further on it the race... what pretty much everyone has now had, a tummy bug. It was nasty and such a waste of a nice day, but a good way to loose weight! I bought an mp3 player on Tuesday morning, so consequently spent all of Tuesday afternoon/evening putting songs on it with some friends. I was using it on the beach yesterday when the Haka came on, was rather funny (I didn't know it had been put there)! I went to Waiheke island yesterday which was so cool! Nice hot day and there were lots of long white beaches, heaven! There were also lots of winerys but I didn't venture to them, I'll save that for later in the trip!
And one of the most exciting pieces of news - Lucy managed to say my name!! It's her first 3 syllable word, which came before even Tracey's name (she wasn't amused), and comes out more like 'Wawwiot', but we all know what she's saying!
So that's most of the excitement from the last couple of weeks, I'll update if I remember more. I hope that all's well back home and no-one was too traumatised (ha!) by the earthquake.
Hats xxxx
