A long day for the Donkey The next morning Showpony and the Donkey awoke to a beautiful day, well suited for biking except for the fact that first they had to get from Auckland to the Cape, a distance of 420km so that was going to take the best part of the day. Showpony and the Donkey biked to the assembly point, just down the road from their hotel, where they met other, like-minded animals, all getting ready for the Tour Aotearoa. There were plenty of donkeys, some horses, a single cat, some kunekune pigs, three large ducks, a flock of sheep, a few shy deer and an Italian goat, and a whole lot of other species but Showpony was the only show pony. The Donkey eyed them all up and informed his friend not to ... read more

Well i’ll Be a monkeys uncle. We checked our bags in and no fines for excess baggage. Wonders will never cease. Easy stay at the airport. Not too many people and comfortable seats so we did not use the privilege lounge. Movie and meal on the 3 hr trip to Kiw. my only observatio, and I certainly am not being an is, but the air New Zealand cabin crew looked nearer retirement age than me! Can’t complain about the service at all. Because of all our luggage the taxis would not take us to the hotel so we got a white airport transfer bus for NZ$35. We now know that the yellow bus costs $2! We had a beer and a meal. I had fish and mash in a mushroom sauce and Alex had a chicken ... read more

Drove to Taupo but again way too busy. So we continued on to Golden Springs, it consisted of a holiday park a couple of shops that had closed and a sign that said "Golden Springs". The holiday park advertised a geothermal pools so we checked n and set up the tent. I'll include pictures of the pools, we went in but they were rustic. Between the trucks on the highway right next to us and a dog that barked it wasn't a great night. We drove to Matamata "home of Hobbiton". We found a holiday park with a real thermal pool And spent another night. Thursday we drove into Auckland, I had booked an AirBnB for 4 nights. Bob had recieved an email from a friend in Palm Springs the day before, we started looking at ... read more

First day of SE Asia trip with Annie! First almost disaster as realized no charger for our DJI Osmo! Managed to collect on way to airport. Moral is check your gear well in advance! My first time in the new ANZ lounge - very nice and a huge improvement on the old one which was getting very tired indeed! still not as flash as their lounge in LAX which is my favorite anywhere but still cool.. is 1100 too early for bubbles! Hell no! I have a feeling this trip will be great but may have cut it a bit short in some places....we will see........ read more

Bernie came in from his White Night exploration at about 2.30am and crawled into bed to sleep for an hour before the alarm went off. I was only vaguely aware that he had arrived home! Ugh, the alarm went off at 3.30am and I staggered out of bed and into the bathroom for a very quick shower. I cleaned my teeth again even though it was only about three hours since I last cleaned them! A big THANK YOU to Kerry for driving us to Tullamarine Airport at the very unfriendly time of 4.00am! We arrived at the airport about 4.32am only to find that while check-in for our flight was open, the International Departures Lounge doesn't open until 5.30am. After checking our bags we had to wait near the check-in corrals for almost an hour ... read more

Woke to a message from Singapore Airlines saying my flight's been delayed by nearly four hours so a morning of relaxing and watching the England batsmen exhibit admirable patience as they try to bore New Zealand to a stalemate. I've avoided the temptation to dash in to town and catch an hour or two of the match. If the new flight time proves real, then it'll chop my transfer time in Singapore from 4.5 hours to 1 hour, which is probably about as close as one would like to cut it. Here's hoping it all works out. Update from Changi Airport, Singapore: Made it here in good time for onward flight to London so it's all worked out rather well. And well done to our Sussex man Matt Prior for rescuing the final test :)... read more

Long drive to Christchurch to return the van (it's a relief to be free of it) and then to the airport for the flight to Auckland. Cloudy day down below but a few snatched sights of Marlborough Sounds and Taranaki hiding under a cloud. Typing from the plush, relaxing bar of my overnight hotel near the airport. Lazy start tomorrow to catch lunchtime flight to Singapore and from there on to the frozen UK. If someone could organise for a bit of a thaw before I land early Wednesday morning, that would be much appreciated...... read more

Volunteered to collect waste along the Airport's shoreline. This ment getting a chance to work on the far side of the runway, ride a hover craft, explore restricted shoreline, do good for the environment (specifically marine life) and enjoy a BBQ with friends afterwards (while playing with the firetruck and plane spotting). If you get a chance to do this I recommend it.... read more

NZ- our last day Today is Monday 30th & our last day in New Zealand. We fly out at 0800 tomorrow morning......which means a wake up call at 0445 & the shuttle at 0530.....uuuggghhh- that will be ugly. BUT, on the upside, we have a 4 ½ hour flight back so can sleep on the way. Yesterday we challenged ourselves to catch the bus & head into the city centre.....armed with maps & the advice in a tourist book to buy a day link ticket- cost $10 each & you could get off & on any bus service all day- good value. They charge per ‘section’ normally, which they possibly do at home too, but I never use the bus. So a short walk & we were on our way about 10am. The driver was very ... read more
