Here we are in north Island Looking forward to our next lot of adventures but not looking forward to it all coming to an end as time just seems to be flying by. Loved South Island and have been told that north is totaly different so we shall see. Wednesday 29th October We arrived on North Island safely but had a bit of a do when we arrived as everywhere was full and we couldn't really get out into the country to pull over for the night as Wellington is so large we would have wasted loads of petrol to just drive all the way back again. So instead we drove around the one way system for about 2hrs before pulling in to a pay and display spot for the night as they're FREE until 8am. ... read more

The Beginnings of a Voyage of Self Discovery Sayonara Hull and Hello world! These are the Voyages of Magic Murphy “a Gorilla with attitude (plus a banana earring)”, his adopted human Jaimé and his travel buddy Nadine. They say the longest journey starts with a single step but for me it seems like 10 million steps just to get to the jumping off point. For the sake of completeness and in case you think you’ve wandered into the Grammy Awards instead of a Travel Blog let me start with some apologies and thank you's. My apologies to those of you who I didn't get to see or email before I left, there really are only so many hours in the day and I do need to eat, sleep and attend to Murphy’s bodily functions at some ... read more

So we fell asleep last night to a wet, windy, and rainy Auckland. We woke this morning to that same Auckland so decided to have a low-key laundry day. After dropping off our laundry at a nearby laundry service, we walked around the central business district a bit and the K’Road area. This is a bar area of Auckland complete with some interesting shops. We popped into an army surplus store and wondered how many militias existed in the area as the clientele was interesting. We spoke with some of the locals and got a recommendation for dinner. This proved to be the highlight of the day. After picking up our laundry and getting showered up, we ventured to Ponsby neighborhood for dinner at SPQR. We started with an appetizer of prosciutto with truffle oil and ... read more

Auckland, City of Sails Thursday 20th November 2008 This is our third night in Auckland and our verdict is that it’s a great city. Leaving Fiji with its bure huts, coral beaches and simple lifestyle and then just three hours later arriving in such a vibrant modern city, has been quite a surreal experience. We arrived at lunchtime on Tuesday and spent over two hours between landing and getting outside of the airport, mostly standing in long queues, to clear the rigid customs and security inspections; we even had our boots disinfected! Although tedious, the whole process was done in a very courteous manner. Kiwis are nice polite people, so we smiled in a compliant way and finally escaped and got the shuttle bus in to the city. We found wonderful accommodation here; a lovely studio ... read more

After five days in the Opua Marina, we’d straightened the boat and had a thorough wash down to clean off residue salt. We started the process of acclimatising (brrrr) and felt ready to swing 'on the hook' again so headed to the nearby island of Russell, in the Bay of Islands. We'd visited by ferry on our second day in Opua and found it very appealing. This sleepy, quaint island houses 600 off-season residents but during the summer months an additional 5400 people descend. On hearing this we were glad to have arrived in the spring while the charm was still apparent. We called in on the Russell Radio operator who occupies a small office on the waterfront to obtain regular local weather updates as we were waiting for the right weather window before heading southeast. ... read more
