HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAN!!

We arrived in FeeJee (on the island of Viti Levu) after a fine flight with Air Pacific but were too late to catch the bus to our accomodation. Instead we stayed the night in Nadi, near to the airport.

The next day we took a taxi to the bus station in the main town, caught the lunchtime bus to Korolevu on the "Coral Coast" (a 2hr journey) and arrived at "The Beachouse" in time to check in to our garden room and take afternoon tea (free, every day at 4pm!!) by the pacific ocean.

The hostel is set in a coconut grove, right on the beach with an amazing coral reef and safe-swimming (if shallow) lagoon. There is a cafe where we ate breakfast/lunch/dinner and not much else around. We looked forward to a week of relaxing...

On Monday morning the rain started (HEAVILY) and didn't really stop until Friday...

Even though this is the dry season, apparently there are always a few days of rain at this time of year!

Net result:

- we read loads of books

- we spent afternoons learning to make coconut jewellery

Emma learned to weave coconut leaves (and made a hat and a kazoo)

- we played chess

- we drank Kava (made from a root with narcotic/sedative properties which is drunk from a bowl, may cause hallucinations and tastes like plasticine stirred into dishwater) at a Kava ceremony (lots of clapping, singing, shouting "bula!" (lit. "life!")) and consequently had the best night's sleep of our lives!

- we were taken for walks by the hostel's doberman (who has a name but we renamed "fluffy")

- we had head to toe massages on Thursday on account of it being our fourth wedding anniversary

On Friday, the sun came back so we finally got our few days swimming and lounging on the beach.

Sunday was our last day and one we got to live twice. Even though this was yesterday it is also today. We spent the day at the beach in Fiji then caught the evening bus to the airport. Our flight was at 11pm and then we crossed the international date line and the equator, moved from Spring into Autumn and landed in Hawai'i at 7am (having set our clocks back 22 hours) on

Sorry for the pun! I'll get my coat...
the same day - ready to live it for the second time...
