Today I finally made it to the island I’ve been dreaming of for years - Taveuni. This morning I packed my bags, said some goodbyes and checked out of the Beach House. I caught the express bus on the main road, right in front of the resort, and took it back to Nadi to the airport. I had a bit of time to kill, so I browsed the few shops, had lunch in a café and read a bit. Then it was time to board my flight. The flight was with Fiji’s domestic airline. Being a domestic flight, I knew it wouldn’t be very big . . . but I had no idea just how small the plane was going to be! There were only 13 of us on the flight - and even if it ... read more

Fiji, ok what is Fiji??? For us it just started out as a stop-over to cross the Pacific Ocean. But after figuring out that almost any flight would make a stop-over in Fiji, we decided to abuse the moment and prolong our stay. 2 weeks we gave to ourselves. Happy sharks.... One major attraction is the shark feeding dive in Pacific Harbour, so we booked it. Chris was totally into it, Agi went like "let's see, is it safe.....?!?". But some other divers in Vanuatu had already been to Fiji and had already done the shark feeding dives and they went it's totally safe and like being in a zoo, so she went also for the double shark feeding dive, brave girl as she is. But see also: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPJUakJdaAo . During the first dive we started ... read more

Day 9, Wednesday, June 3rd This was a long day of travel. Ferry ride to taxi ride to airport, where we loaded onto a small sea plane type vehicle. Then that plane made one stop before arriving on the island of Taveuni. Then shuttle ride about 45 minutes to our resort...yes, resort it was. The place was so big and white and clean with modern seating and hammocks. There was a pool and what we thought was a hot tub, but just a kiddie pool I suppose. Caitlin and I shared a room, since the hotel got rid of their dorms and we jumped up and down at how clean and cool it was with a good size balcony overlooking the sea. We got our bathings suits on because we thought the pool had a hot ... read more

Bula to all our friends and to the crew on Tui Tai We arrive at Nadi airport in Fiji at 04.30 after 30 hours travel, including 9 hours wait at LA airport (so boring) for a connection and losing a day as we crossed the international date line. Still we arrived and as we waited for the next flight out to Tavauni the sun came up - so nice. A bit of a wait and we are then boarded onto a small twin prop plane with 18 seats (both your luggage and you are weighed) and about 40 years old - straight out of an Indiana Jones movie ! Ninety freezing minutes later (its not a sealed up plane) we land on Tavauni in the wind and rain. No one from the boat is their to ... read more

We flew to Taveuni, "the Garden Island of Fiji." It's called the Garden Island because it rains ALL THE TIME. We hiked to a waterfall and spent the night at the lodge there. No power and worse yet, no beer or wine. Oh the travesty! We passed the evening talking with a Dutch girl about travel and then tucked in to our twin beds. Not the most romantic anniversary we've ever had. We boated across the Somosomo Straight and stayed at the Dolphin Bay Divers Resort. It's right on the beach and we were able to get our dog fix in with Boxer and Socks. We went diving four times and one of the dives at "Jerry's Jelly" was one of the best I've ever done. We saw tons of weird and beautiful fish, a blue ... read more

We arrived in Fiji to be greeted by torrential rain which wasn't really what we had in mind but it was still incredibly humid, we went to a nearby hostel just for the night as we were leaving for Taveuni the next day. We got a good nights sleep somehow despite being in a 32 bed dorm and headed to the airport ready for our fight. As it was our first full day in Fiji we weren't yet aware of the 'Fiji time' the country operates on, which basically means people can be constantly late for everything without feeling guilty by just using the excuse that they're on Fiji time... Once we checked in and didn't even yet a boarding pass we became a little suspicious but we did as we were told and sat down ... read more

My Christmas holiday started in Labasa - the main town on the second largest island, Vanua Levu. My fellow travellers and I spent the first day looking around town. Labasa is a big centre for the sugar cane industry here so it wasnt unusual to see huge trucks spilling over with sugar cane trundling through the main street in town. Next stop was Savusavu - about a 3 hour bus ride from Labasa. Its only about 70kms from Labasa to Savusavu but given the steep hills and the age of the bus, we averaged around 20-30km/hr. It was a great way to see some of the countryside and the smaller villages. Savusavu is a bit of a sailing capital so a few nights were spent at happy hour at the rather rustic & tiny yacht club. ... read more

One last night in Fiji and then we're off to New Zealand. Had lots of great diving in the Somosomo straight just off from Taveuni. Amazing all the soft coral there, although of coarse it does meaning to learn to adjust to current diving. That being said, the diving was quite superb. Things of curious note in Fiji. When you get fired/leave work they post your picture in the news paper! Just imagine, you get sacked from yer job and then get the extra bonus of knowing that the whole country gets to see your picture in the news paper announcing your gonna be broke. Bula. Cool way to say howdy in Fiji. Working on way to combine it with eh and huhhh. Kava. Nasty drink that tastes like dirty bark juice. If you drink enough ... read more

Last day in Fiji - sort of a big bummer, especially because it’s the most beautiful day we have had yet. But it’s bitter sweet because we know we have a bunch more exciting places to head to next! So, our flight out of Taveuni was at 4 - so I had all day to dread getting on that little puddle jumper. But I did it in style - long walks on the beach, yummy breakfast & lunch, lounging time in the sun, and a massage in the shade. It was damn hot out. Like, can’t sit still without sweating hot - not just me, Dan too, so that means it’s really hot (because I sweat like a cow on a normal day). But as I sat out in the sand and played with Jimbo ... read more

What a day. I woke up with a running start - it was gorgeous outside! Finally! I saw those blue skies through the corner of my eyes and I was out and ready to go at like 7am! Had a nice leisurely morning - breakfast, walk on the beach (found the coolest shell!), played with the Jimbo (he loves coconuts), and packed our stuff for our day out. This time we drove down the eastern coast of the island. The road was only paved for a short bit of it, so it was quite a bumpy ride. There is basically one ride on the island that goes around the perimeter - so it’s hard to get lost. But Babu is a wonderful driver and a great tour guide so we were set to go. Drove through ... read more
