(... continued from previous) The next day, four of us along with two Fijian escorts hopped on a small boat to Nanuku, a small remote island with white sand, crystal clear aqua coloured water surrounding it and palm trees growing richly - exactly how you imagine paradise. After walking around the island and basking in its beauty we had dinner and all settled around a bonfire and gazed at the millions of stars above. The next morning we awoke to a bright sunny day and fresh turtle tracks on the sand in front of our bure. We went snorkelling where we saw colourful fish, coral and a small shark! One night was not enough on this little piece of paradise so I decided to stay another night, as everyone but Nick waved goodbye - a decision ... read more

Bula! After an overnight flight I arrived to Fiji where Jen, my friend from back home whose flight arrived a few hours earlier, was waiting for me. We got picked up from the small airport in Nadi and headed to Bamboo beach, a hostel with free wifi, a pool and daily activities - all for only $6 a night for a dorm with 15 beds. I believe you are meant to meet certain people... In the line from Honolulu to Nadi I met a New Zealander named Nick, we coincidentally were going to the same hostel, Bamboo Beach, he then introduced us to Henry, a blonde long-haired New Zealander who had been living in Fiji for the past 4 years, who wore no shoes, no shirt, just a pair of board shorts - the smiliest guy ... read more

Happy New Year 2012 and best wishes to all of you. This is the first entry of 2012...mainly about our last few days of 2011! I really don't know where to start this entry. So much to say, and I have no idea in which order to put things. Shall we start by the beginning of 2011....we started in Syria, Leslie, Mari and I. We had no idea that few days later, the Arab Spring would be on the verge, not many people have had the experience we had in Syria in 2011. Keep in mind, 7 days after Mubarak went down in Egypt, I was enjoying Cairo as never before! But our wishes for 2011 came to us earlier than we expected...sometimes, you just have to trust time, or at least your patience and serious ... read more

This morning I packed my bags and left Taveuni. Before I left, I spent time just standing on the hillside at the end of Makaira’s property, overlooking the ocean with a 180-degree view up and down the coastline. Then the staff sang me a farewell song. Lucy hung a floral lei around my neck. I went off to the airport, waited for my plane to arrive, then boarded onto another small domestic flight. There were only 8 passengers this time! As we took off, I said goodbye to Taveuni. The flight back to Nadi was just as incredible. This time I had the opposite view of my flight there. Taveuni could be seen out my window for the first 20 minutes or so, until a cloud rolled across and covered the view. After an hour and ... read more

Today is my last day in Taveuni. Last night, when I was trying to figure out what to do with today, I felt torn. I thought I should be “doing” something with my last day, but at the same time I’m pretty worn out and didn’t feel like a big trip and also didn’t want to spend too much more money here (these 5 nights in Taveuni are costing me almost as much as the next 2 weeks will). I flipped through my guide book and my accommodation’s binder of things to do. Eventually I settled on going on a tour of a black pearl farm. The spot to meet the boat is only about a 3 minute drive from where I’m staying, the tour is less than 2 hours and it’s inexpensive but I’d see ... read more

Taveuni is world-renowned for its reefs. The Rainbow Reef is particularly one of the most stunning so it was high on my list of must-dos while in Taveuni. I decided to go out snorkeling on the reef. I’m certified to dive, but I’m out of practice and I’m a very nervous diver and many of Taveuni’s dives are drift dives; all of it had me increasingly anxious about going out diving. But I knew I’d regret not going out to the reef. Snorkeling seemed like a good middle option and I was thrilled yesterday when I called one of the island’s dive operators that a snorkel trip was going out today. I was taken partway down the island’s West Coast to a water jetty to meet the dive boat. We had two instructors, then an Australian ... read more

Today I ventured down the other end of the road, along Taveuni’s East Coast. Paul, who drove me yesterday, drove again and Pela, who I’d met yesterday, came along. Both of them are from villages along the East Coast and Pela has worked as a guide there, so I had the perfect hosts to show me the way. We headed to the far end of the road to Lavena. The road only goes about halfway down East side of the island - after that there are too many rocks and streams and waterfalls in the way so a road has never been built. While the road on the Western side of the island is paved, on the Eastern side it is not. Although it’s only about a 20 kilometre drive, it takes just over an hour ... read more

The day before I arrived, the area right in front of Makaira (where I’m staying on Taveuni) was designated a Marine Sanctuary. Roberta, one of the owners of Makaira, and some other local people had been pushing for this for awhile. She is thrilled that it has been approved. She spends a lot of time on the reef right in front of her property. This last March, a big hurricane hit Taveuni - I’ve been hearing a lot from people here about what the island was like before the hurricane hit. I think it’s beautiful here, so I can only imagine what things were like before the damages happened. The reef took a big hit. Roberta and some of the guys who work for her, frequently go out onto the reef to do some coral gardening ... read more

It’s my first full day in Taveuni and I’m eager to see this island I’ve been dreaming about! Today, being Sunday, is generally a quiet day in Fiji. Most shops are closed, some tour companies don’t run. Many people head to church. The Catholic church on the island is in the village of Waikiri. I’d read and been told that even though the service would be in Fijian so I’d have no idea what was being said, it would be a great experience to go - the singing is incredible. So I went to church this morning. Many of Makaira’s staff (where I’m staying) are Catholic but don’t often get the chance to go to Waikiri for services because of the time and expense. So since I was already going to be paying for a van ... read more
