Elaine - another volunteer on this trip - decided to come along to Aitutaki with me and I'm glad she did. The prop plane zoomed off with us to Aitutaki in about 45 minutes and as the pilot made his descent, paradise rose from the sea. Imagine it: the endless, cobalt blue ocean and suddenly, an "island" of brilliant turquoise water, a hook-shaped island ringed with white beach and 15 small islands called motos, covered in palms. A quick tour around the island with a stop in town -choose the green store, a kind of mercantile where a woman was bbq-ing bright blue-green chunks of parrot fish for the $7NZ lunch special, or the brown store that sells pareaus. The yellow store was closed. Not much else there. Soon we were at the boat and sliding ... read more

Once back from Akaiami we spent a few days on Aitutaki exploring the island by the help of a rented scooter. Before you can drive in Cook Islands you need to get a special Cook Island driving licience. The police figure that if you can drive from the rental garage to the police station and get there in one piece then you are a safe driver. Managed to get to the police station safely however finding a policeman to get the licience was slightly more difficult. We asked someone in the local market when the police were coming back and were told there were no policemen today and to come back tomorrow. So off we went driving around with no licience, life is very laid back in Aitutaki! Whilst on our scooter travels we came across ... read more

We landed at 6am in Rarotonga (the principle island) to be met with lush flora and forna, intense humidity and a lovely man playing the polynesian guitar, we both immediately felt better after the grey chicken incident in LA. We stayed in town for the first night as we had early morning flights to an outer island, Aitutaki, the next day. We wandered around the shops and lined No's tummy with nutrious milkshakes and chips - I've never seen him so happy. We flew with Air Raro to Aitutaki in a tiny Saab 340 plane with propellers instead of jet engines. The ride was comfortable with more room than a commerical plane. We knew we were getting close as we could see the Aitutaki islands and outer reef from the windows. Our host, Queen Tutai met ... read more

Our short Air Rarotonga flight touched down in the tropical island of Aitutaki following a stunning decent that gave us a jaw-dropping panorama of the collection of islands and atolls held within the large, turquiose lagoon. Since Aitutaki is an island held within a lagoon (just like Rarotonga) the water off the beeches are shallow, clear and still and if you stand at the shore, it won't be long before a shoal of small fish patrol past. The main island of Aitutaki is really small and it's a wonder how they managed to fit in a runway. The island has a proportionate population of some 2,000 welcoming and friendly souls. We wanted to use our Cook Islands driver's licences again so we picked ourselves up another couple of mopeds. This let us explore the island's deserted ... read more

July 27th, 2007 We arrived in Rarotonga at about 6:30am. It was still dark when we landed, but we were welcomed into the small airport with smiles and a song from the locals. We left most of our luggage in left luggage and waited for our 8:00am flight to Auitutaki. It was a short flight (about 45-50 minutes). We saw our first glimpse of paradise as we flew over the Island. The island is surrounded by a coral barrier and the lagoon goes from crystal clear in some places to a brilliant turquoise. We landed in Lamond/wirig style to a light shower (that was to pass over soon and the sky to become a bright blue again). The airport was a small building that housed a snack bar and a man singing. (pretty sure it ... read more

On Olly's birthday we flew to Aitutaki. It took 40 mins on the little plane. The view flying in was fantastic - we could see the whole of the bright blue lagoon. We stayed in a little hut right on the beach, it was lovely. We thought we's seen paradise but we hadn't until Aitutaki!! It's a huge aqua lagoon surrounded by reef. It's considerred to be one of the best lagoons in the world. It couldn't really be any better! The sand is so white and fine. The following day we had a walk to the 'town' which was teeny weeny, and also climbed to the highest point on the island to get a nice view of the lagoon. It was a bit overgrown up there though and also rained so we didn't see ... read more

Flying from Fiji to the Cooks is only a straight easterly flight of 3 hours. We stayed for a few hours on Rarotonga the main cook island and then set off to discover Aitutaki, an atoll in the cook island group. life in the cooks was even more relaxed than in Fiji, everyone wearing flowers in their hair and being really smiley. But the cooks were also very much like a tropical New Zealand. The main language beinlg Maori and the locals looking much more like the maori in NZ than like fijians for example. On Aitutaki we had intended to hire bicycles but they were all out or broken, so we dared to ride a small scooter for the first time in our life and that was good fun (we didn't admit our lack ... read more

09/03/07 - 15/03/07 Cook Islands Paradise on earth!! In the Cook Islands, the greeting equivalent to ‘Hello’ is ‘Kia oriana’ which translates as ‘May you have long life’ which has a more longevity than the greeting in most languages where we generally wish each other a mere ‘Good day’ only. We arrived late at night, spending our second Friday 9th March night in the Aquarius hotel just across from the Airport. Similarly to Fiji, we were met at the airport by the sound of a guitar, ukulele and singing which some feel is that beautiful island sound and others feel resembles the sound of a cat being strangled. I refuse to pass comment! Saturday it rained. And I mean Rained - it absolutely throw it down all day. We attempted to spend the day looking round ... read more

Scott was eighteen months old when we finally summoned up the courage to attempt a full blown overseas holiday with a toddler in tow. I'm not quite sure why we were so scared. We'd carted him off to the wilds of Borneo when he was only four months old after I'd been enlisted to work in the thriving Sarawakian capital of Kuching for a few weeks the previous year. We survived that. Well sort of. It seems that the residents of Kuching weren't all that used to seeing blue-eyed fairish-haired western babies, so we were mobbed by besotted locals wherever we went. Once we'd got used to the idea that he wasn't all that likely to be kidnapped, we relaxed a bit, and even managed to turn their fascination into a benefit. The standard routine when ... read more
