Another lazy day on the beach! We headed off after a leisurely breakfast to the beach around the Samade Bar which was about five mins walk away. We’d heard this was the best beach but it wasn’t a vast improvement on our own beach, plus there were no loungers for us to use. But we spent the morning laying in the shade there as it was way to hot to lay directly in the sun. We didn’t go in the water as it was muddy and there were crabs everywhere (although they do run for their holes quickly when you start to walk towards them)! Around lunchtime we set off on a walk along the other side of the strip of island we were on. It was much rockier here but at least there was a ... read more

We woke up bright and early and finished our packing ready for moving from Amuri Pool Villa to a place called Inanos on the other side of the island. Paul gave us a lift over and we were finally able to find some bread in a shop on the way. We were met by the owner who showed us to our accommodation. We had a one bedroom place on stilts right on the beach. Ours was the only beachfront property they had so we were lucky to have made the booking early. The view from the deck over the white sand and the lagoon was superb. It was clean and spacious enough for both of us with a couple of burners and a fridge. We had high hopes for the location as this end of the ... read more

It has been a long day but I really want to write it up now before I forget any of the details as it was one of the best days ever. We’d booked to go on an Aitutuki Adventures lagoon trip today. The trip was run by Puna and Tutu, a married couple who had been running the tours for a number of years. Puna took the boat out onto the lagoon before explaining to us where our first stops were going to be. On the way Matt spotted a turtle coming up for air, unfortunately by the time I looked it had gone, but we were told that there were lots of tutles in the lagoon in the areas we were travelling so it made us all look out a bit harder in the hope ... read more

I slept terribly last night. I think it was because there seem to be more geckos in this villa than the last place, plus there seem to be more creepy crawlies in general. That combined with the fact it was so hot all night stopped me from relaxing as whenever I lay on top of the covers I was thinking about all of the things that might crawl on me. We decided not to hire bikes today and instead to have a fairly relaxed day. We started with a breakfast of boiled eggs on the deck overlooking the ocean. Around 11am we set off with our beach bag packed to get a closer look at the lagoon. It was beautiful. More turquoise than Rarotonga and there seemed to be more fish everywhere. We walked along the ... read more

Today was our last day (for now) at the Muri Beach Cottages. We just managed to fit everything into our rucksacks although we knew that our hand luggage was overweight for the Aitutaki flight (as it's only a small plane the hand luggage allowance is tiny). We hoped it would be relaxed and that they wouldn’t care because if they weren‘t we were in trouble. I spent part of the morning walking along the beach watching the fish while Matt had a nap, and then had a long chat to Gwen, who runs the cottages. She moved to Raro from the US in 1960 and had brought her family up in the spot where our villa now stood. They’d knocked down the family home a while later to build the self catering villas. She sounded like ... read more

Our flight to The Cook Islands departed Auckland around 7pm on the 9th August but arrived in Rarotonga at 1am the same day. Of the many things we’ve been lucky to do on our travels we can now add time travel. Our next flight was to Aitutaki, a small, beautiful island. The only problem was that the flight was at 8am so we were in for a seven hour wait at the airport. The airport itself was pretty small and there were thatched huts where we managed to get some sleep for the evening. We arrived at Aitutaki and were greeted by the owner of the Seaside Lodge, Roro, who drove us to our hut by the sea. We hung around outside on the beach for an hour or so while the room was vacated but ... read more

Landing in Sydney on Thursday afternoon it felt strangely like I was coming home... Sydney remains the closest place, in my opinion, to London and for that reason I love spending time there. However, by the time I had wandered around the domestic terminal trying to figure the best way to reclaim my left luggage from international terminal and then arrived (via the airport link train) at Central it was quite late. This time my stay in Sydney was going to be at Sydney Central YHA, as decided that it would be worth my while getting YHA membership as planning on using their hostels whilst I’m in NZ... Settled into my room and then headed off to find the cinema on George Street that Hayley and Lucy (the ‘Fraser Island girls’) mentioned to me. Fortuitously I ... read more

After the wedding we went to Aitutaki and Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. We stayed in a little thatch roofed villa at a boutique resort called Etu Moana, which was great. We used the resort's bicycles to go to the shop on the island for regular chocolate supplies and to neighbouring hotels etc for our meals (since we could only get breakfast at our resort) including a couple of Island nights (which seem to happen every couple of days). There was neat snorkelling at the beach in front of our hotel (including a blue starfish) and it was nice and warm to sit back, relax and recover from the wedding. One day we went out on a lagoon cruise (on the yellow boat) where we saw heaps more fish and giant clams! The guy running the ... read more

I was missing Fiji, leaving it behind on the way to Rarotonga, the capital of Cook Islands. Arriving at the tiny airport was a new experience. It's like a bus terminal with all the shop closed. A nice thing about the pacific region is the welcome singing and ukulele! Looking out at the beach was nice but I didn't find it a paradise. After Fiji we have been really spoilt! The water is a different colour to Fiji. I found the island very touristy. There are resorts all over the island. Only 23 Km in circumference with one road which circles the island. There are no traffic lights, crossing or round abouts. There is an hourly island bus, which circles the island. It can be frustrating moving on the island if you don't have a scooter ... read more

And on to Atitaki. A great way to sepnd my birthday. Lunch at a waterfront restauant and then fly off to a remote atoll in the middle of the paciific. This place is really romantic and beautiful. The bad weather however hitched a lift with us. The first day the sun was out allowing us to swim, kayak and enjoy , but then the cyclone hit again and for teh last day it has been pouring. Time to finiah the books I bought with me, sleep and relax. Tonight is the cultural night and tomorrow we will rent a car to go see what else there is of this little atoll. The Wednesday we fly home via LA. Sad that the holiday os over but rather glad to be heading home. ... read more
