Scott writes: Crikey, living in a van and traveling up the east coast has been absolutely ripper so far. Our very basic of mobile home, now called Chad, is exactly that....basic. We have all the normal rooms that come with a house its just our kitchen, lounge, bedroom, garage and loft are all rolled into one small space. Oh yeah, and we have two bikes that go into the mixer as well now. Go North We decided to travel up the east coast and abandon our original thoughts of going south and then west on the basis that a few locals gave us some fair dikkum advice and told us it would be cold. We didn’t really like the thought of being cold and sitting out on a camp site in our rinky dink chairs freezing ... read more

Well, as promised, this entry is being written in the internet cafe at my youth hostel in BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA. So, to all you worriers, yes i made it here in one piece! Both flights were fine-service and food both good, not v.much turbulence and on the first flight i got extra leg room AND a window seat AND a free seat next to me(perfect for sleeping or in my case sitting there with my eyes closed and wishing i was asleep)! Jet lag really started to sink in on the second flight and by the time i reached Brisbane (9hrs ahead of England) i was ready to drop into a coma which is exactly what i did at 9.30pm. Today, my first full day in australia, was spent exploring Brisbane on foot and getting provisions ( ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Great Ocean Road April 28th 2006

After travelling through hundreds and hundreds of kilometres of fields (I had no idea there were that many sheep in Australia!), we were definitely ready to see some ocean scenery. Although we saw bits and pieces of the ocean while we stayed in Robe and Port Fairy, the Great Ocean Road didn't actually start until we passed Port Fairy. The road still didn't hug the coast, but there were many turnoffs to the various geological formations. Along the entire road we were rained on (it followed us!), but we were able to find a few breaks to explore. All along the road, the coastline is constantly being battered by the southern winds and waves. As time and the forces of water take their toll, the coastline is continually degraded leaving hundreds of isolated rock formations standing ... read more

finally arrived at the forbes mansion - due to our slight detour, kids were in bed so the forbes outdoor veranda entertainment commenced straight away and we had our first proper aussie barbie !!! it was great to see them again, catching up on memories of mad ski trips and maureen's toe examination !!!!! woke up early for the forbes family morning school run chaos - what gorgeous kids. Funny Brandon is just a mini-forbes and Kimberley and Annabel are mini-Mo's. And what a school they're at !!! no graffitti, fighting or police!!! Never been a proper school. Fantastic place with sporting facilities that would go some way to explaining why the aussies tend to be winning most things at the moment. In an attempt to reverse this phenomenal success Forbes & I took the the ... read more

Back in Sydney! Everything is still very shiney here. I went back to the Opera house today and it is still shiney. I walked across Harbour Bridge today and it is as shiney up close as it is far away. As you can see, i went to Bondi Beach. Weather was poor but i took some photos anyway, last chance. Next stop is Canberra for a couple of days before i head North and enter Queensland. Gonna spend a while looking around Brisbane before moving to Cairns....probably. Added a few night pictures of the Harbour area, as well as some Harbour Bridge pictures i took as i was walking across it. Maybe pics tomorrow when i charge camera.... read more

Day 20 - Saturday 22 April Margaret River Today was a chill morning. This afternoon we went to Mammoth Cave which is a limestone cave that you take a tour through. You have these MP3’s that you put around your neck and take a self guided tour through the cave. Very dark and cold. Other than this I spent my time in an internet café and Graeme and the kids went to the pub (because as usual it was raining). Everybody congregates around the camping shed at tea time to cook their tea and have a drink. It is a great atmosphere talking to everybody from young and old and loads of stories to listen to. Day 21 - Sunday 23 April Margaret River We got up early this morning and had bacon and eggs. We ... read more

Josh and I went to an Aussie rules footy match today, we saw the West Coast Eagles crush the Brisbane Lions by 122 points to 63... it was an awesome game, but one of the most brutal sports I have ever seen, some of the players took some really big hits, the kind that would have football players writhing on the ground for hours. From there we went out to the pub, watched some football, dissappointed to see Chelsea win the league, but i guess it was inevitable Had probably the best day so far yesterday went on a trip to the Pinnacles, these weird rock formations in the middle of the desert. We also saw Koalas and Kangaroos at Yanchep national park, and went sand boarding on the dunes (like snow boarding, but on sand) ... read more

Arriving in Cairns after a six hour bus journey we had been in contact with some of the guys from Fraser Island who were also now in Cairns.. we just can't get away! Pedar, Anna, Ed and Emma were all in Cairns for our arrival. In typical Fraser Island fashion a Goon night had been organisedand as before we offered our hostel room and balcony to be the feeding ground for the fun. There is a hostel in Cairns called Gilligan's that had been recommended to me by at least seven people and it was quite obvious from the moment we saw the reception why. It is set in a mall with a huge open and very modern reception, not disimilar to that you'd find in your average 4 Star hotel, with a large bar opposite. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Blue Mountains April 28th 2006

Ken and Alison were kind enough to take us on a trip to the Blue Mountains for two days. Only 2 hours from Sydney, this part of the Great Dividing Range took 25 years for Europeans to cross, not because the mountains are high but because this is true Aussie "bush" - extremely rugged and dense. Travelling in a 4WD bus (yes, that's right) we made our way out of the city. In the distance the mountains really do look blue. There is reason for this. Eucalyptus, or gum trees, emit an ultrafine oily vapour that hangs in the canopy giving it a blue tinge. Isn't that interesting? Our first stop was a small meadow tucked away from the human population where kangaroos come and eat and relax and socialise it seems. We could get really ... read more
