Lucky Bay - Cape Legrand
A sneak peek to whet your appetite! I’m writing this blog tonight but won’t post till tomorrow as there’s no signal here in Lucky Bay. Masses and masses of natural charm but no phone signal!
Well, I cannot possibly, not in a million words, say enough about this place we have camped in tonight! Oh good Lord it is just spectacular. Lucky Bay, in the Cape le Grand national park! Please put this place on your bucket list, you will NOT be disappointed!
But first things first, our day began very early as we were waken early by some yobbos pulling into our free camp area around 4.00 am, and driving their car like maniacs. We were showered and on the road by 6.30.
It was a short run into Esperance for breakfast. It’s a very lovely town, mixing tourism and industry very well. There’s a huge working port at one end of the foreshore, and the longest fishing jetty at the other. In between there are beautifully manicured lawns, landscaped gardens, displays that talk about the history and character of Esperance, bike paths and exercise stations. There must be masses of money spent keeping the foreshore beautiful and it shows!
We went for
Esperance
But lets look at Esperance first. This is a roundabout that seemed to have been built especially for the local seagulls. They are stoked! a really long and lovely walk along the foreshore before finding a laundromat, getting some supplies and going to a local football match. It’s a really nice town and you could spend a lot of time here. The weather was better today, even went back to shorts! Yayy.
After lunch we headed off to Cape le Grande national park. It was a lovely drive and an hour later we arrived at Lucky Bay camp grounds. Wow, wow wow, as I said earlier this place is stunning, stunning! My friend Dianne had told me about it, and I’ve since found it’s very famous. It’s known as the world’s whitest beach! The whole national park is surrounded by these beautiful waters, but Lucky Bay seems to be the best of all. The first thing we saw when we parked were 2 beautiful kangaroos in the camp area! They were everywhere. Rob was able to pat one. They are wild but must be very used to the campers. Big signs say don’t feed them though!
The beach is a horse shoe shape with beautiful sand dunes on one side and stunning rocky outcrops on the other. The camp grounds are above
Esperance
From the jetty, looking over the foreshore and the town. Beautifultown and forsehore and overlook the ocean. I went for a walk down onto the beach and almost cried with the beauty of it. And kangaroos are all over the beach. One came hopping over to me, looking for food I’d say. The beach, the water, the sand dunes, OMG I hope you can see some of its beauty in the photos. The water, oh lord, the colour! Crystal clear but turquoise in the sun! It’s a small surf and the sound of the waves crashing, amazing. Sigh…….
I hurried back to get Rob so he could experience this beauty as well. He was amazed too. More photos!
It was getting late, the sun sets pretty quickly now, so we went back to the Bago and cooked some dinner. We were sitting out eating when a female roo cautiously hopped towards us, looking for food I’d say. She was really animated, sniffing the air. Didn’t think she would really eat a lamb chop though. But we might have let a couple bits of carrots hit the ground for her to forage for later. She had a baby in her pouch but it didn’t pop out, must have been pretty tiny.
Esperance
Looking out to the end of the jetty. Not sure its length but is bloody long! The ranger came and we paid our $6.50 each to stay here, So cheap to stay in paradise. If I could come back here again, I would come in the summer and snorkel those beautiful waters…
So people. please enjoy the photos of Lucky bay, I have masses of them. But as I said before this is definitely a bucket list place. And fantastic for us on our last day before we make the big drive days over the Nullarbor and towards home. It’s not so easy to get here, it’s probably 700 k’s or so from Perth. But worth it! So in our trip we have seen Cape Leveque at the very top of WA and now Cape Le Grande at the bottom of WA. Both the most stunning of all the beaches. (My opinion anyway!) Feeling very very fortunate… They call this Lucky Bay, I reckon, because you feel extremely lucky when you get to see it.
