Wednesday 13th and for a change, our journey today was only some 128 kms but we were still on the road by 9.30am. Just 50 kms away was Denmark where we had stayed for a couple of nights on our previous tour so we pulled in near that same caravan park for our cuppa and cake. What a delightful spot! The park is right on the river estuary and as we strolled on the footpath alongside we saw three Spoonbills, a Black Winged Stilt and a Sea Eagle all within a few minutes. We chatted to a couple from Perth who were sat by their caravan enjoying the beautiful scenery. We happily whiled away an hour there and wondered if we should be staying there again but as we were booked into Walpole today we were ... read more

Up early again and we were off to Albany. We went up to a lookout to see some amazing views and then over to some rock formations on the coast called “The gap” and “The natural bridge”. Really beautiful spot that reminded me a lot of Ireland. From there we headed to Walpole to do the tree top walk. We were about 40 meters up in the sky and the trees were still way above us. That was really cool. We also went to the bicentennial tree which has these spikes in it that you can climb up to the top. The tree is about 72 meters up. I only went up a little bit but it was a bit scary to come down. There is no net and if you slip there is nothing to ... read more

Our hostel is located right in the centre of the Tingle and Karri forests, and the area is popular with walkers and those who wish to spend some time enjoying nature and tranquillity. Started off the day with some fresh air and exercise by doing a scenic walk around the Knoll. Spotted two green parrots which flew over us & saw lots more pelicans on the beach. Then we drove to see a Giant Tingle tree set in the heart of the forest, down a gravel track. Next we visited Mandalay beach to see the elusive shipwreck! Apparently it is possible to view the shipwreck from the beach every 10 years - no luck today! A wild natural beach with crashing waves, quite isolated - just a few fishermen. Back to the Knoll in the evening ... read more

Set off on our journey west to Walpole. First stop was Mount Melville to get one last view of Albany before we left. Great views from the observation tower of the turquoise waters off Albany's coastline. On the way to Denmark (a town - not the country!) stopped for lunch at the outstanding beach of Greens Pool. (Unfortunately being school hols & an outstanding beach, everybody else was there too!) However if you walk round to Elephant Rocks you will find another fantastic cove with clear turquoise water, white soft sand and a much quieter beach - yippee! We sat on a rock & contemplated swimming & although the water wasn't too cold we thought we'd better head on to see more beautiful things! One of our favourite places though. As we headed away from Albany ... read more

Well it's been a blissful week in WA. The sun has pretty much shone on us for most of the week - except for a shower or two on the track on Thursday. I'll get the walk info out of the way & move on to more interesting subjects. Spectacular is the easiest way to describe the scenery here in the south west. If my camera takes one more photo of a tortured, rugged coast line it'll probably freeze up! It's all very much like the Great Ocean Road without the road. We're walking through fairly rugged country, over cliff tops and in the back bush of the "Great" Southern Ocean (we think they need to put "Great" in there - they do it for all other Australian things). We're usually the only two people walking ... read more

Fed up with Pemberton, I headed down to Walpole for a bit of rest and relaxation over the new year. Walpole is 420km south of Perth and 120km west of Albany, roughly a two hour coach journey southeast from Pemberton. With a population of only 450, the township of Walpole is completely encircled by the 18,000 hectare Walpole-Nornalup National Park. Within the boundaries of this National Park are forests of Tingle and Karri trees, miles of coastline, beaches, rivers and estuaries plus a massive abundance of flora and fauna. Walpole is situated on the shallow Walpole Inlet. This has a depth of no more than one metre and is fed by the Walpole River. Good for chilling out with a bit of fishing. After my success in Pemberton and slap-up trout suppers, I decided to invest ... read more

Finally the weather looks like it is getting better, well for a couple of days anyway. Travelling on from Augusta my first stop was the Giant Gloucester Tree. This tree was used as a fire lookout point as it is the highest tree in the area. Climbing this tree is a must. Spirling up the tree are metal spikes sticking out of the trunk fashioning a very rough looking ladder. With no ropes, harnesses or anything else to hold you to the tree is really gives you the incentive to hold on tight. Did I also mention that this tree is 250 feet tall!! Moving on from this little baby I went to the Bicentennial tree which is a whopping 260 feet and not only that but they have built a tower perched on top of ... read more

Well its 11 days since last I blogged and we have travelled some miles since then. We left Ceduna on Thursday 16th for the long awaited crossing of the Nullarbor. The road was great and the weather even better for driving - overcast with the occasional sprinkle of rain. Quite a few road trains around but didn't bother John at all really. He had been warned so many times that it was almost an anti-climax. We didn't hit the real desert until about 270k out. Then very flat and scrubby. Passed through Yalata roadhouse on aboriginal land and it is closed. A bit further on pass the turn off to 'Head of Bight' where the whale watching is fantastic in season. This is also closed as the sign says 'no whales'! About here we start on ... read more
