Days On The Road = 44 Tuesday 7th August 2012 Heading to Point Samson today where we will setup camp and base ourselves for a couple of weeks. We arrive not too late and set our annexe up ready for our two weeks in the surrounding area. As we setup Charles and I enjoy a couple of cold ones which go down a treat. Point Samson (Fact File) Located in the West Pilbara Region this delightful little fishing town is just idyllic for our two week stay. Not far from the mining towns of Wickham, Karratha and Dampier. Point Samson was named after Michael Samson in 1863 and was established as a deep water port which serviced local and surrounding areas. Although it was a small port it actually was the third largest annual port tonnage ... read more

Roebourne/Cossack/Point Samson 19th to 21st May 2012 All three towns are within 30 odd Klms of each other and we stayed at Point Samson as our base to discover the area. In 1856 Francis Gregory undertook the first European exploration of the Pilbara Region. It was a result of Gregory’s favourable reports of the area that settlement went ahead. In May 1863, Walter Padbury became the first settler landing at the mouth of the Harding River with his livestock near the present sight of Cossack. Cossack was first known as Tien Tsin, after the barque that carried Padbury and his party. It was also known as Port Walcott and North District before Governor Weld in HMS Cossack visited in Dec 1871 and the town’s name was finally chosen. As the first port in the North West, ... read more

Exmouth has been a great stopover. There is a lot to do in the area and the Big4 Park where we stayed was well appointed and just a kilometer stroll to the shops. We discovered Whalers, a local restaurant and coffee shop that served nice food and that elusive ‘good’ coffee. We were surprised on our arrival to see Rod and Lynne Dell . We first met them at Esperance and then saw them again at Jurien Bay. Whalers became a dinner venue for the four of us and the company and food was excellent. We’ve talked about our first week here and so let’s look at the last few days. Oyster Stacks and Turquoise Bay Rhonda was really keen on the snorkeling experience so we took a trip back to Cape Range NP to visit ... read more

The Cove Caravan Park in Point Samson is fairly new and the facilities were a sharp contrast to those at Black Rock Caravan Park in South Hedland. The sites were also very well laid out with a concrete pad for the annexe and plenty of room to park your vehicle in the bay. We were only one site in from the coast and so had views over water. However, another camper warned us straight away about the bad sandflies so we were careful to spray on the insect repellent. Even so Judy was eaten, perhaps it is insect attractor instead. The first afternoon we drove around Point Samson and Judy worked out a circuit for her jog the next morning. We booked in for 3 nights so we had time to stop and relax but somehow ... read more

Yesterday we left Karratha and drove towards Point Samson, about 70 kms away. We turned off to have a look at Cossack about 18 kms before Point Samson and where we were told is another good place to view the Staircase to the moon. Cossack was once a busy port for ships loading and also for pearl diving, and was a thriving little town. Evenually the river silted making if hard for ships to get through so they moved the wharf to Port Lambert, a few kilometres beyond Point Samson. Now Cossack is a ghost town. A few stone buildings are all that are left standing there, the timber buildings have long gone, but the town is something of a museum with plaques dotted around town with photos explaining life there in the late 1800’s, early ... read more
