Wed 28th Mar - up early for our long drive today - estimated about 614klms - not looking forward to this drive but there is nothing much to see along this stretch of the Nullarbor so just headed off. Went through the Quarantine Checkpoint at the Border Village and then we were in WA, nearly home!!!!!Checked out some of the Golf links at some of the petrol stops. Booked a night at the Fraser Range Station CP ($30pn). Very nice little park - used to be a working sheep station but now just seems to be a caravan park and 1 hole on the Nullarbor Links Golf Course (the World's Longest Golf Course). Tom and Rosemary were up early as they were heading to Esperance for lunch but we took our time and decided to check ... read more

Leaving our secluded campsite after breakfast with the family of Magpies we made our way back to the Eyre Hwy and headed west towards Balladonia. After passing more of the magnificent semi arid shrublands dominated by Mulga (s) we arrived at Balladonia. This arid shrubland is one of the world's oldest landscapes, containing seashells millions of years old from when the area was ocean floor. The Balladonia roadhouse (eating & fuel again!) has a cultural heritage museum setting it apart from all the other roadhouses exhibiting Aboriginal dreaming, Pioneers, Afghan Cameleers and the crash landing of NASA's Skylab in 1979. Balladonia is also the end of the 80 mile straight. We enjoyed a morning coffee here served to us by a young lady from Mildura. Like us, she is struggling with the sunlight at 4.00AM. Day 6 7am start again. As I was cleaning the camper floor before I fold the camper up I noticed some small droppings inside the camper. I still can’t find the critter and hoped that it left the camper that night. We drove pass Mucklamukla and saw the Kuhlman name on street in Ceduna. I fuelled up at Ceduna at 1.89/litre. Got a sms from Andre saying they left the Berverley Easter camp. I did my sums on the Kms left to do and realised I am going to be late for our Esperance destination. I really have to travel a lot of kms today but I still want to do a few sight seeing things on the Nullabor. The Nullabor were green. I expected white or red dust with little plants. We are outside whale ... read more

Wednesday 30th – because Graham had gone to bed very early he was up and about at 6am and I followed about half an hour after. It was a nice morning with a few clouds about keeping the temperature down. Last night and very early this morning we could hear a cock crowing and various other animal noises, so I strolled down to see where these creatures were. At the bottom of the caravan park I saw the culprit – a nice looking bantam cock with a hen and a youngster. Sweet, but I could have killed him at 5am this morning! There was a variety of geese and other chickens there as well so it may not have been the cute little chap to blame! Don, our neighbour, came round with half a cabbage, an ... read more

I check out at 10am and headed over to the train station as my train wasn't until 11:55am I had to wait a bit. Turns out Jo was also there as her bus left from the same station and she is on her way to another country pub. So we got to have a hug and say goodbye again. No matter how many goodbyes I go through they never get any easier. I hopped on the train and was asked to switch seats with a guy as he wanted to sit next to his gf so that was ok. I had a seat to myself until we got to Kalgoorlie. The train zoomed past Southern Cross one last time for me. I made sure to wave. I'm in the red service cars and while they aren't ... read more

Well, lots of things have been written about the Nullarbor and all of them undoubtedly true to the eye of the writer, but sit back, read and enjoy our journey as we travel from Esperance to Ceduna, this long, flat, boring straight, eventful, dull, uninteresting road. To build up our nerve we stopped at Esperance for 3 days in a park nestled next to the train line and the road train highway, bringing grain to the port at all hours of the day and night. Now we don’t think Esperance is famous for anything special, but we did hear tell the story of Sammy the sea lion. So with little else to amuse us we went for a look see. Now we have to say that having walked the jetty and seen the small bronze statue ... read more

Hi All, Firstly an apology for not updating this blog for a while, however things happen and some days there is no internet connection, even if the creative juices are flowing. Crossing the Nullarbor is a bit of an Australian tradition I would think, similar in some respects to crossing the equator, as it requires (particually many years ago) time and an arduous bit of adventure. Today the road is excellent, there are sufficient overnight stopping and refueling facilities, and the traffic is a higher volume, but you can still drive for an hour or more at times without seeing another vehicle. The Nullarbor itself is about 250.000 square kilometres in area, treeless, and is basically a limestone slab, initially part of the ancient seabed. There are a lot of sinkholes, caverns and caves and a ... read more

Friday 19-3-10 The trip to Norseman from Kalgoorlie was uneventful & we got fuel ($1.46) at Norseman & had lunch, before we started our long trip heading to the Nullarbor. We had been on the road for 3 hours already so we decided to stay at 10 Mile rock (no 26 in the Camps book) 79km east of Norseman. We set up camp way down the back with Tony , Cheryl & Jake. It was peaceful & we were away from the noise of the highway. The girls & Jake had a great time off their leads & were very good. We had a great Avo & had a BBQ for tea & enjoyed each others company. It was really hot 35 deg, but a breeze came up & it was not too bad. At least ... read more

Day 235 - Cape le Grande to Woorlba (Eyre Highway) We’d done a lot of our packing up last night before we went to bed as we wanted to make an early start this morning to ensure we make as much headway along the Nullarbor as possible. I woke up far earlier than I needed to so decided to go for a walk along the beach and leave Dar to get some extra zzz’s. The morning is as predicted, very bright with a shining sun and the bluest of blue skies. It looks like it will be a lovely day here today and at least the sun came up before we left so that we get a glimpse of how good this stunning area is at its best. Walking along the beach seemed a bit too ... read more
