Ngligi Caves (formerly Yallingup Caves)
We were almost certain that we'd find Batman here but couldn't find any real evidence. Damn he's good! lol Slept in yet again
Good I can get ready quick.
A nice packed lunch too!
I had a really great sleep last night. So good in fact I didn’t hear my alarm go off and was woken up by Sarah at 6:15! Aah! I only seem to sleep in when I’m at people’s houses.
Working on adrenaline, I was ready to rock ‘n’ roll in about 15 minutes. Sharifa was kind enough to make me a packed lunch for today. I’ve been in Perth less than 24 hours and already I feel like a part of the family…the Dina’s might not be able to get rid of me. Lol
Sarah drove me to my pick up point for my bus tour. There are only nine of us on tour. A good mixture of people since we have only three from England, two from Chicago, one from Hong Kong, one from Beijing and one from Denmark and oh yeah, myself. I think the next three days, two nights will be alright. J
First stop was at a bakery for some breakfast and then off to Dawesville by the water for some coffee and tea.
It was another hour’s drive to Bunbury to the Dolphin Discovery Centre where we were hoping to spot some dolphins. Since these are wild dolphins there are no specific viewing times. We heard from some of the volunteers that a few dolphins had been by earlier in the morning so I was thinking our chances of viewing some dolphins were gonna be slim. It was interesting to read information about the dolphins…
• A 150 -200kg dolphin eats about 80 herring a day. To eat the equivalent, an 80kg human would have to eat 24 herring a day or 16 hamburgers.
• The gestation period of the dolphin is 11.5 to 12 months
• They give birth to a calf about every three to four years.
• Each dolphin can be distinguished by identifying marks on their fin.
We had a little more driving ahead of us before getting to our lunch spot where I’ll see what surprises await me in the nice packed lunch that Sharifa put together for me. Mmm, roast chicken sandwich with salad, apple, banana, chocolate tart and even a Spiderman drink! Lol
In the afternoon we went to Ngilgi Caves. Simply stunning caves. Too bad my camera couldn’t really pick up what it was I was seeing. It was really cool looking up at the thousands of stalactites of all shapes and sizes. The largest being two tonnes! The cave was split into two parts. The first part went down and it became really humid and with the increased amount of carbon dioxide it made breathing a little more difficult but not too bad. The second half was one huge cave. Supposedly good acoustics for singing and a place where people like to go to get married.
Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park is our next stop. It was named after a couple of shipwrecks in the area. In particular we stopped off at the Canal Rocks where we saw some awesome waves of the Indian Ocean. Of course none of which I really caught on film. Yallingup is home to three top surfers in the World. They say kids learn to surf before they learn to ride a bike!
We also stopped off at Mad Fish Winery for a bit of wine tasting. I tried a few of the whites and only one of the reds since I typically do not like red wine. I ended up buying some wine...makes a great gift! Everyone thought it was weird that I kept saying that I don’t really like wine and then I’m one of only two people in our group that bought some wine. Then it made more sense when I told them I would be giving it away. Lol
We stopped off quickly at Prevelly Beach to check out some of the surfers before checking into the Innetown Backpackers where there were six of us in one room.
For dinner we went over to one of the local pubs. The pub was pretty quiet or it could be because it was pretty big and spread out over two rooms. The fish burger for $6.75 was delish but would have been a tad better if I had ordered fries with it as well. BUT good thing I didn’t because the fish burger was HUGE. The size of a 6 inch plate and I’m not exaggerating.
It was amateur night at the pub so we stuck around for that to start. Besides there wasn’t much else to do back at the hostel so why not see what the amateurs have to offer. The first act started out okay but by the second and third song it was pretty apparent all of his music sounds the same so the following five songs seemed really, really long. The second act was amusing. I think perhaps because he reminded me of my tenth grade typing teacher Mr. Manhas but this guy had shoulder length curly hair. It must have been the glasses that made him Mr. Manhas-like. He tried to be all cool with his electric guitar. First playing the Stones song “I can’t get no Satisfaction.” Let me tell you he did TRY to sing that song I’ll give him that much! The second song started out pretty badly - out of tune. And it was made worse when the rest of the band tried to play along but didn’t really catch on. It just went downhill from there so we left because we couldn’t take it anymore!
