Lighthouse at Cape Leeuwin
It was super windy out which made the flag fly nicely just for my photo! Raining cats and dogs
From 3AM to wake up.
The skies are clearing.
We had a 7:30AM start so it wasn’t too bad this morning. I woke up before my own alarm but that is probably because of the three other alarms in the room that went off before mine! That’s okay though since I really wasn’t asleep because of the loud rains pounding on the roof.
Now we’re on our way south with our final destination being Albany tonight. Part of the scenic drive included seeing the big Karri trees. Looking at them from the road they don’t look all that big but once you are standing beside one you realize just how large they really are. An optical illusion!
Onward to Augusta and Cape Leeuwin where the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean meet up. Cape Leeuwin is the southernmost point in Western Australia. We drove closer to the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. Wow, were those some powerful winds that we experienced!
Then it was off to the 61m high tree climb at Pemberton…the Gloucester Tree. Going up was fine but coming down and the vertigo was another story. It’s a ladder basically built into the
Allison with her birdie friends.
These rosellas were ultra friendly! tree. You can see where the tree has grown around the spikes. There were all of these colourful rosellas and a couple of parrots that would eat from your hand and really they really liked to land on your head. Everytime someone went to take a picture of one on my head the bird would fly away. There was this one that really liked to hang from my sweater on my stomach as well. So I faced two of my fears today…birds and heights.
It is now 11:30 and we’ve all decided to continue on and eat our lunch on the bus. It is amazing the power of suggestion…everyone is eating an early lunch…we’ll be on the bus for about one and a half hours before getting to the Valley of the Giants - The Ancient Empire and Treetop Walk.
The treetop walk was amazing even in the pouring rain. 40 metres up…didn’t seem that high and a slippery metal walkway. The walkways were swaying a lot more than the Otway treetop walk. It was nice that the rains eased up when we were about half way through our walk. The tinkle trees are just huge. It is
In the Valley of the Giants.
That's me at another treetop walk. This time in the Valley of the Giants. Now those are some HUGE trees! common for the base of the trees to be hollowed out by fire and there’s a picture from the 40’s with a car inside one of them.
The sun came out when we got to Elephant Cove and the giant rocks in a formation of an Elephant. Now we are headed to Denmark which is a little humourous since Michael on our tour is from Denmark.
It was nice getting into Albany around 4PM and have a bit of free time not that there was much to see and do because we’ll be seeing most of the scenic spots in the morning. But it was nice to just stretch out and not on the bus.
Dinner was at a local pub where we got a choice of $10 meals. I went for the steak sandwich and fries since I really haven’t had fries in a while. It was super delish and huge too. I couldn’t even finish my fries and that’s saying something! Well, I guess it could be that back at the hostel we had some chocolate cake that they were offering at 6:30…
Our driver Rod took us out on a little walk to
In the Valley of the Giants.
Get a load of one of the long walkways! a ship that was used by some of the explorers back in the day. It was a pretty small ship but housed slaves, animals and a crew too…pretty cramped! It was cool to see the ship 1) with the lights it looked a bit creepy 2) it was free. Normally there is a $5 entrance fee during the day and it’s not like I want to go below the deck!
Then it was back to the pub where we started a little pool competition. I’m crap at pool so I didn’t compete. Kristina and Rod were the champions winning all of the games - even the one against a couple of locals who by the way took their pool very seriously. Margaret meanwhile got hit on by this old guy who even bought her a drink.
Back at the hostel we all got ready for bed. There was a bit of an incident where Margaret got all freaked out because of the shower and the water was going everywhere and she couldn’t get the water to turn off so she was freaking out and shrieking. Granted she was being noisy and the woman had every right to get
Elephant Rock
A pretty cool walk over the walk at the beach to check out Elephant Rock in SW Australia. mad BUT she just went on and on…
