After leaving Karijini we were on the long road again. Not much to see on this highway and not many towns to stop at. We did however get an amazing sunset so we stopped for pictures and at the same time as the sunset the moon was rising. Pretty cool. We made it to Pardoo Roadhouse at 7pm in the dark. There is nothing here but a roadhouse, a campground and a few motel rooms. Everyone would be sleeping in swags on the grass but because of my stupid broken ribs and my inability to get down on the ground I had to stay in one of the motel rooms. The tour company did pay for half of the room but even then it still cost me $50!!!!! YIKES. Guess they can charge whatever they want ... read more

Sunday 12th - the night had been bitterly cold and not what we had become used to. Tom Price is very high up in the hills so a cooler temperature was expected, but not this cold and when the alarm went off at 6.15 it was a bit of an effort to get out from under our nice warm quilt. But we got ready in good time and were waiting at the caravan park reception to be picked up at 7:30. By then another eight people from the park had joined us and we were to pick up one more person “on the way” so our tour party was eleven. Our tour guide, Chris – a pom from Warwickshire – was a very jolly, humorous chap who proved to be an excellent guide. The tour was ... read more

Big drive inland from the Cape Range peninsula, the crosswind battering the van from side to side, Elton John blasting out of the stereo. Few hundred kms to a free roadside camp ground where we baked some potatoes on an open fire. No poetry readings this time though. Eat up some more miles the next day. Drive for nearly 2 hours without passing another car. Open red plains either side, with rolling hills on the horizon. Lose count of the number of dead kangaroos in various states of decay by the roadside. Big old eagles feasting on the carcasses. Pull over a couple of times to let road trains thunder past. Stay a few nights in Karijini National Park, which is in the top left hand corner of Australia in the Pilbara region. We clamber down ... read more

No one could escape its disarming powers, looking around I found that I was the only one to still fall prey. But already I knew it was too late. I had already lost....... I was getting sleepy! Isn't it amazing how the heat of a little sunlight through a window combined with that soft rocking motion of a bus can combine to send even the strongest willed into gentle slumber. And a half hour into part two of my journey south to Perth all twenty of my fellow travellers had gone quiet. I was beginning to fail too! This was another journey with Western Xposure and once again the distances involved would call for a number of days where we saw little that was not through the window of a bus. One thing that had changed ... read more
