Massive wave
Taken at "The Gap" west of Albany. 2nd Feb. As I write, I am listening to the reports of Cyclone Yasi, which is about to hit North Queensland, being upgraded to a STRONG category 5 with winds of 300km/hr or more. It’s unimaginable! Those poor people! They are just starting to get back to normal after Cyclone Larry some five years ago and here we go again. It makes you wonder why anyone would want to gamble with their lives and livelihoods by living in those areas, beautiful as they are?
We’re now in a small town called Bremer Bay, about 180km east of Albany. We had a bit of a worrying time last weekend in Albany, when the weather people forecast that Cyclone Bianca would affect our location. Fortunately though, it fizzled out and we were ok. As a result of the bad weather we were able to get some great snaps of huge waves hitting the coastline at a place call “The Gap”. (See attached).
The trip here was pretty uneventful and took about two and a half hours. We will probably get the fishing gear out today and catch our dinner!! Bremer Bay has many small beaches, all with lovely white sand beaches.
Water Fireworks
Another spectacular wave crashing against the rocks. Yesterday was a bit cloudy so the colour of the sea was a bit disappointing. Today has clear blue skies so hopefully we will see the turquoise waters we expected.
The campsite is set about 4km out of town and it was so quiet overnight, you could hear a pin drop. Having said that, we did have a visit from a “skippy” at one point and it must have tripped on our power cable or something, because there was a hell of a scuffle outside. Rose sat up vertically with fright when it happened!!!
As you can see from the snaps, the beaches and colour of the water were beautiful. One of them was named “Blossom’s Beach”, which is the name Rose uses for her daughter, Cassandra.
3rd Feb. We made our way to a small town on the coast called Hopetoun. It is very close to the Fitzgerald National Park but unfortunately all of the access roads were closed on the day we were there. Not to worry though, we were happy to browse around town and relax.
4th Feb and we relocated to Ravensthorpe this morning, parked the van and then took a short
Blossom's Beach sign
Look at that water again? 400km round trip to Hyden where the famous “Wave Rock” is located. The pictures say it all! We were back at our van by 5.30pm. As soon as we get internet service, I’ll publish this blog. That will be Esperance, probably on Sunday.
6th Feb. Now Sunday and we arrived in Esperance this afternoon. It’s cold (21 deg) and very windy. Should feel the after effects of cyclone Yasi in the next few days. Mainly rain I’m told! It’s been causing havoc in Alice Springs.
Cheers
John & Rose

Surfing the rock
So - how far back did you walk on Wave Rock? Bit of a surprise isn't it as we had never seen anything advertised/spoken about the size of the rock overall. Hope you are enjoying yourselves even more - we have floods around our way lately - 122mm of rain Fri/Sat night - I was at Mt Buller with Tim (Mountain bike racing) - they had close to 190 mm!). Drove back home yesterday evening and just as I got to Yarra Glen they closed the bloody road! Literally 5 minutes before I got there - 50 km detour...Not happy Jan! Add a case of pneumonia over the last 2 weeks which My Buller didn't help fix - if you have good weather can I come and stay with you? Please? Pretty please with sugar on it? :) Stephen
