One of the many beaches in Albany
This was the bay the shark was seen swimming around in. Words cannot describe just how excited I was when I touched down in Australia, it’s now the third time I have been here and every time I am more ecstatic than the last time but unlike my other visits I only had one week here and I wanted to visit the south western part as this was the one area I had not seen, so me in my travelling wisdom looked at the map and decided to go as far south as I possibly could and it seemed Albany was the place. Not only did I choose to go there for its location but also for its prime whale spotting opportunities as it was the season to be spotting those breaching giants of the sea.
Besides the whales the area has some stunning beaches, scenic walks and I was also going to do some couch surfing. I ended up staying in Albany for five nights and four days and for the first three days I was taking walks along the coast with ever a keen eye cast out to sea in the hope of seeing some kind of whale action, as it is quite common for them to come right
Bridge of the seas
A natural bridge carved from ancient granite by the forces of nature. into the bay and next to the coast line. Regardless when I wasn’t looking out for ole’ Mobby I was being very kindly shown around by my couch surfing hosts. The coastline here is stunning and there was more than enough to see, with its white sandy beaches and aquamarine sea but the sea was a little too cold for taking a leisurely dip so I decided to leave my swimming costume at home.
My last day in Albany was finally upon me and still not a dorsal fin in sight, so if the whales weren’t going to come to me I was going to have to go to them, so on a blustery morning I set sail on a whale cruise with optimism in my heart and clad head to foot with my waterproofs. We sailed for 4 hours only the vast Southern Ocean stood between us and the Antarctic but still no sightings of whales, we then turned and started to head for home. En-route we spotted some dozen or so sea lions basking in the rain, even as we were pulling into the harbour although our chances were ebbing away our optimism wasn’t. Alas it wasn’t
I'm going in
In the back ground is WAs' most southerly point. to be but I do have an open re-run ticket so it looks like destiny is calling me back to Australia. Once I started to tell people of my bad luck apparently a 5m great white shark was seen in the area the day before and that was maybe one reason the whales weren’t coming to the surface and maybe why I was refusing to take a dip in the sea.
So, onwards and forwards, I have a brief stop-over in Sydney and then onto Christchurch, New Zealand. Yeah! So I am so looking forward to blogging my adventures from there. Thanks for reading, take care
