With the offer of a chauffer driven tour of the Yarra Valey from our new flat mate Gavin, we were up nice and early and eager to educate our palates, although our chauffer was a little slow at getting started, still slightly dazed from his exploits the evening before! Without too much of a delay we were soon on the road and heading north out of town to the promise of free wine at the cellar doors! We reached our first stop of the Rochford Winery in about an hour, and started enthusiastically tasting. The wine maker was very helpful, giving us a good grounding in the process of tasting, as well as talking us through each of the wines we tried in an attempt to educate our sensory awareness! Next we went to Oakridge where ... read more

We were up bright and early for our winery day tour. A small bus came to pick us up and then headed into the city for the rest of the pickups. We had a full bus of about 24 people. We drove out of Melbourne and into the Yarra Valley known for it's wineries. Our first stop was at Yerring Farm, a small boutique winery. We were given instructions on how to properly critique the wine, swirling the glass, sniffing it all that fun stuff. Then we got to the best part, tasting! They had a bar set up with all kinds of wines to try and we could try as many as we wanted. They had a sweet chardonnay dessert wine that was my favorite. I think I tried like 10 different wines there. Next ... read more

Day 135 18th January It was an early start but we were looking forward to our day out. We’d had a look around and decided to go with APT Tours for our Puffing Billy Trip, which included lunch at a vineyard and an afternoon at a wildlife reserve as well as the train ride. Puffing Billy railway is one of the five narrow gauge lines of the Victorian Railways and opened around the beginning of the 20th century. The steam train runs through the southern foothills of the Dandenong Ranges to Gembrook. (just outside Melbourne). To be honest it was something neither one of us knew anything about until we were putting our wedding list together all those months ago. I’d spotted it on a website and thought it sounded cool! We had to be a ... read more

Yarra Valley We spent 4 nights staying in the Yarra Valley at a family friend’s place, Lynn. Here we explored some of the Yarra Valley Wineries and took time to sample some lovely wine. We took a tour of the Domaine Chandon winery, which is linked to Moet and Chandon, and learnt Moet is pronounced with the T as the origin is Dutch. We sampled their sparkling wine range including a sparkling pinot noir (cold and bubbly red?!?), which was different but tasted great. We also checked out a couple of other wineries on another day, only a few sips at each though! We spent time at a Wildlife Park seeing kangaroos, koalas, Tasmanian devils, platypus and other Australian wildlife. Natalie enjoyed feeding the kangaroos and seeing all the animals she hadn’t managed to see in ... read more

(Port Phillip Bay from Arthurs Seat Melbourne) Before I begin telling you what we've been up to in Melbourne I'll let you all know what we did in the final few days of our stay in Perth On the thursday night we headed out towards City Beach and the Quarry Amphitheatre, an old limestone quarry that has been converted into a theatre. The quarry had been carved out by the prisoners of the time and you could still see their initials carved into the wall (as well as the words "point of no return" which incidentally is one of the last things the groom sees if you get married there!). They had backfilled the quarry to produce tiers of grass seats with concrete backrests. We were here to see Giselle, the tickets that I had brought ... read more

You’d be forgiven for thinking all caravan parks are the same: a flat area accommodating rows of identical tin sheds on wheels, slightly grotty ablution blocks, an even grottier camp kitchen and a motley collection of kids playground equipment. One of my favourite Monty Python quotes was “...as much imagination as a caravan park,” so while the thought of travelling around Australia had a lot of appeal, the prospect of a continual succession of caravan parks did not. However, Australia has taken the caravan park to another level, making it part of the cultural art form which they adore - being out in the great outdoors. Every van park we have stayed in has had its own particular character, its good points and its bad points - either of which makes it memorable. We’ve been on ... read more

On Saturday, Nichole, Brenna and I went on a wine tour through the Yarra Valley! It was an amazing day and I can't wait to do it again when Mom and Barry come to visit :) We loaded onto the bus in the city around 930am and headed out to the valley. Our tour guide's name was Richard and he played really good music on the ride to the valley. He played Hotel California (the live version...the BEST version), Queen, some other stuff...BUT he doesn't like the Moody Blues (Sorry Dad...I'm on your side, Moody Blues are awesome!) It was a little over an hour drive to the valley. Our first winery was a small one called Yering Farms. They do everything there (growing the fruit used in the wine, labeling, bottling, everything) and it was ... read more

Hey Everyone! So, I did a bunch of stuff this weekend that I NEVER would have done! I'm proud of myself! A bunch of us joined the Mountaineering Club and went on their "big weekend." which means we go camping for a weekend in the Yarra Valley area and do a bunch of outdoorsy campy things. It was definitely a challenge....especially with my minor fear of heights. We got there Friday evening and set up camp, which consisted of me and the other girls I went with picking a spot on the ground to put out sleeping bag on. We slept under the stars and I got to see the Southern Cross constellation! BEAUTIFUL! There were so many stars. I slept like a rock, so much so that I didn't know until the morning that our ... read more
